What if I told you there was a very unique system, with a revolutionary control scheme? A system that lets you play sports like baseball, bowling, golf, and more, by performing the real-life actions? What would come to your mind?

The system I'm describing is called the XavixPort, and it was released in 2004... 2 years before the launch of Nintendo's Wii. Look at what's available for it: every sport that's also in WiiSports, as well as a Lifestyle Manager (WiiFit?). Is it possible that this system influenced Nintendo? Perhaps they saw the potential of such a system, and decided to use a similar concept in their next system...?

The Dreamcast had similar motion sensing functionality with it's fishing rod controller, waaaay back in 1999. The fishing rod controller could also be used to play games like Virtua Tennis and Soul Calibur:

I know there have been accessories with motion sensors (NES Power Glove) before, but there's never been a whole system based on one. The Wii isn't the first to do it either, because the XavixPort came first.

Seriously, I can't find any additional information on this system other than its website. What company makes it? Are the games any good? Are they sold in stores? Aren't you at all curious about this enigmatic system?

...This next question will probably be asked at some point, so...
Which name is better, Wii or Xavix?

Interesting find Mop. I've never heard of this system, it seems quite interesting. As for the name...let's just all agree that they're both terrible names. ;)

Sorry Mop, I wasn't meaning to sound dismissive. :(

To make up for that (and out of my own curiosity), I done a bit of research...

From what I've read, the XavixPORT is named after the chip inside each of the carts; the "console" is simply used to interface with the TV, whilst the processsing is done in the individual cartridges. The Xavix chip has been used in other plug and play systems and "consoles", including the V-smile education system:

Interestingly, it seems like the XavixPort was developed by ex-Nintendo programmers and engineers! Read more (and see the games carts) here:

For some reason, when I see Xavix, I think of the word cervix.

Thanks for the information alxbly, it answered a lot of questions! It's interesting it was made by some ex-Nintendo guys... I wonder if they knew about Nintendo's own motion-sensor ideas before they left?

In all honesty though, I'm seriously considering purchasing a XavixPort at some point. I know a library of 7 games is ridiculously small, but the games look fun, and I simply love the fact that it uses cartridges. Who knows what might come out in the future...

I remember seeing a TV commercial for that thing a few years ago. At least, I think I saw a commercial. Anyway, it looks like it advertises itself as a sport simulation device rather than a video game system. That is fascinating that some people former Nintendo employees were associated with it.

I will never agree with the agenda is making video games into simulation through controls like this (or like the Wii) -- and Plato would agree with me so you know I'm right!

Most stuff I read on forums about this system wasn't good. I'd do a web search first before you splash the cash.

I thank you.

Now I want it because it is a weird, obscure system that will probably be rare in a few years.

Walmart are selling some rather familiar looking motion sensing gaming devices, according to Kotaku:

http://kotaku.com/gaming/buyer-beware/wii-...mart-318516.php

And the Vii console is a hit in China! Engadget has all the info you need:

http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/28/keepin-...-chintendo-vii/

http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/11/vii-gam...e-craps-indeed/

http://www.engadget.com/2007/10/13/vii-mee...ht-in-the-wild/

Amazing. It even has tennis and bowling! ^_^

And you can see the Vii in action here:

So... anyone want to guess how long it will be until Nintendo takes legal action?

I searched the word Xavix and I saw this picture of all the sports connections and a Jackie Chan poster promoting the Xavix. Then I looked at the guy on the right and it looks like he has Wiimote in his hand.
