Should Gossy be banned?; Like it needs to be asked...

We've all thought it (repeatedly), so let's have a poll. Should ol' Huck be banned? Alxbly's already implemented a hick to English converter script that runs automatically whenever Dave posts, but of course it's not perfect - in a prior post, for example, he called me "Mr big-city fella who washes and even uses soap", which was translated as "pestilent muddy-mottled clack-dish" (see http://z9.invisionfree.com/Nintendo_64_For...&#entry13030592 for his post), and if we just banned him, then we'd be free. Free!

So post your opinion, and let Alxbly know how much we all detest Gossy. Then we'll get rid of Alxbly too. Well, he is Scottish...

My insult to you actually came from this, because the occasion didn't seem to warrant any specific insults. Anyway, are you saying that Shakespeare's language is unintelligible and hick-ish?

Just so it's on record, I absolutely hate Huck Finn. I once told a professor that "American Literature" is a contradiction of terms (she was not amused). Wouldn't it be more effective to slander me as an elitist egomaniac ?

Anyway, I voted to have me killed. Not surprisingly that is currently the majority. >_<

I see the Kerr Avon post editor that was recently implemented is working well. This is the first post of his we've seen that's under 15,000 words...

It's still dribble, though. How can we fix that?

 ^_^

Childish disputes are the very foundation on which this forum was built! We're a fairly young forum, but we've already been lucky enough to experience these feuds:

-Ragedy and StYoung (my personal favourite)

-Dagoss and Kerr Avon

-Dagoss and "Thy Ragedy" (our first posting war!)

-Rapueda and dataDyne (a very swift, quick, downright terrible posting war)

-A certain member who's name will remain anonymous and the rest of this forum.

I guess most of those aren't actually "feuds"...but I'll turn a blind eye to that. ;)

Er, I think I should apologise for this topic, on re-reading it it's not the gentle(-ish), barbed poke at David (I hate calling him that, "Dave" does seem more natural) - I was more than a little bit drunk when I wrote it, after spending several hours at a mate's house watching DVDs (I'm off work for the time being), plus I'm on painkillers for my shoulder (long story) which isn't an advisable mix. Anyway, I typed the original post as a joke, but looking at it now, it comes out as just nasty and uncalled for, especially the "No. He should be killed. Then banned" bit which I definately shouldn't have entered. It just seemed funny (and inoffensive, somehow) when I was drunk. Me and my mates say a lot worse than that to each other as a laugh, but of course that's to people who know me, not a board composed of people I've never met, and many of whom don't know my sense of humour, and it was especially tough on David, so sorry, David mate, and thanks for taking it so maturely. And sorry to anyone else who found it offensive or at least worrying.

>My insult to you actually came from this, because the occasion didn't seem to warrant any specific insults. Anyway, are you saying that Shakespeare's language is unintelligible and hick-ish?

I didn't recognise the quote as being Shakespearean, or even real (but old) English. To be honest, I thought you were maybe quoting some comedy film or TV program that I've never seen. But what little literary (or other) education I've had is largely self-taught. We never read shakespeare at school (seriously, nor Dickend, Milton, etc, we read Adrian Mole and Kes)*, and though I've read much of Dickens (a superb writer), I can't read Shakespeare too easily, as it's something you have to be taught in, and inducted to. Coming to it as an adult on your own, it's very difficult to develop a taste for Shakespeare.

* The school I went to was a joke. For example, we did music for three years, but in all that time we never once touched a musicl instrument, the school was too poor to afford them. The only thing the "school" (as you could laughingly call it) had in it's favour was a reputation for being tough, which of course was no good reflection at all on it's standards of teaching, which were what you'd expect of a falling-to-pieces Comprehensive in a 1980's inner-city cess-pit (everything I say to Alxbly about Scotland is a good natured joke, but lots of it does apply to this miserable area of England where I live).

>Just so it's on record, I absolutely hate Huck Finn. I once told a professor that "American Literature" is a contradiction of terms (she was not amused).

I like the HF and Tom Sawyer, and the other (few, Twain was very prolific) books I've read by the same author. Have you read the Mysterious Stranger? A bleak book published postumously, that was very unlike anything else of Twain's that I've ever read.

And I've read some very good American books, such as To Kill a Mocking Bird, and the works of Poe and Lovecraft (I've read most of the latter, and some of the former), but maybe the average quality of American literature is well below that of the English, I don't know.

>Wouldn't it be more effective to slander me as an elitist egomaniac ?

Your question implies that I'd understand the meaning of a five syllable word :o

Surely some mistake?

>I see the Kerr Avon post editor that was recently implemented is working well. This is the first post of his we've seen that's under 15,000 words...

Only 'cos you cut and pasted my words into your own posts, so you could get the credit for the words of genius

>It's still dribble, though. How can we fix that?

The word is "drivel", not dribble. Honestly...

>...Kerr Avon isn't popular -- !

Oh, I don't know, the police are always after me. I mean, you accidentally steal womens' underwear of their clothes-lines once or two-hundred and ninety seven times, and you're branded a criminal!

>(EDIT: Just so it's obvious for those that don't know, the animosity between me and him is completely harmless.)

True. Dave has even invited me to go and stay with him. He says I won't need a return ticket, and when I get there he'll let me have a good, close look at his shotgun. What a nice bloke :)

>Where is the ban Kerr Avon option?

It was there, but it's worn away due to overuse :(

"It was there, but it's worn away due to overuse "

No need for that, it was intended as a joke. I don't know you, or dave goss! But I do know that I like the N64, and so do you I would guess...

Bottom line: I'm here to talk about my favorite gaming system, and ocasionally browse the off topic section. If I offended you, it was by mistake and not intentional. ^_^

No worries. I took the topic in jest. However...

You fool! Shakespeare did not write in Old English! He wrote in Modern English, it just happens to be an early flavor. It's the same language we speak, not a different one. The dictionary was forthcoming, thus words were not standardized. And (normal) people aren't used to reading iambic pentameter. Don't they teach British history in Britain? Old English looks like this:
Code:

Hwæt! Ic swefna cyst         secgan wylle,
hwæt me gemætte         to midre nihte,
   syðþan reordberend         reste wunedon!
þuhte me þæt ic gesawe         syllicre treow

   on lyft lædan,         leohte bewunden,
   beama beorhtost.

Good luck trying to understand that!

And if you just meant "old" as an adjective, you are wrong for Shakespeare, Milton, Donne, et al are still alive!

Maybe Alxbly should ban everyone, including himself? Then we wouldn't be able to post, we'd only be able to just look at the old posts, and reminisce sadly about the old days, and perhaps ponder the error of our ways, maybe learn from the results of our intolerances, and perhaps even become better people for it.

It might be worth a go. We could perhaps become enlightened as a result of us all losing our posting privilages.

Plus Gossy couldn't post any more. Hurray!

But my favorite feud was BAH BAH BAH

[size=14]StYoung vs. niniendowarrior!!![/size]

A brutal beat-down of niniendowarrior's beliefs, which actually led to the retirement of niniendowarrior not once, but twice! A Nintendo64ever highlight of StYoung's raw awesomeness.

Er, no-one mentioned "going down" in connection with Gossy :-X

But if you mean in a non-sexual sense, then yes, for the greater good, we'd all be willing to forego posting on N64 Forever, if it encouraged other boards to be Gossless. Anything to smarted the repuation of the 'net.

Basically he left because he believed that Rapueda, Alxbly, Floorcat, Mop and I were all terrible staff who should have taken his advice and banned StYoung. He told us that we never did anything to try and help the situation and tried to cover up his own pride with StYoung's (supposed) insults, which weren't even insulting.

In other words, he didn't get his way and became bitter. Very bitter.

The Internet is hilarious. Some people get so worked up on message boards -- but you only know people on the Internet through walls-of-text with a name and avatar attached. Like reading a book, it's a self-reflexive, introspective activity. In other words the only person niniendowarrior was angry at was himself. He's probably still angry at that guy.

Kerr Avon hates himself too, but you don't see him getting all huffy about banning people, am I right?
