We recently purchased satellite internet from Dish Network at my house. Recently as in two days ago. $200 installation fee, pretty expensive monthly, kind of fast but can't be used for online (console) gaming. Plus, after my mom signed an 18-month (
) contract, the installers informed me that I only get a certain amount of uploads and downloads a month until the service turns into dial-up-ness. Lame.So today my brother found out that we can get Comcast high-speed internet. Cheap installation. Same monthly (maybe even cheaper). Can play online games. Etc. So, what to do? I don't know about this contract thing but I want Comcast now... |

18 month contract? What was your family thinking? Last year me and my former roommates spent about $80 for high speed and digital cable with a lot of channels from Service Electric, the Cable/Internet/Phone monopoly of northeast PA. Last Christmas I spent a month at a friend's house who had Dish Network television. It was mindblowing crap. Digital cable has like quick loading menus and easy channel surfing. Satellite seriously takes like 5-10 seconds to switch channels. I don't really get why anyone has it. Unless you live out in the middle of nowhere where you can't get cable, I would never take Satellite. Comcast isn't the nicest bunch, but no ISP's are required to be evil. I have DSL now. It is surprisingly efficient. |

I dunno about the US, but in the UK you can cancel a contract in the first 90 days if you're not happy with it. Maybe you (or your mum) can still cancel? |

That's rough. Usually you can get out of contracts like that if you pay an "early termination" fee. Doing that can be pretty expensive, though. |

That kind of reminds me of the old, old AOL dial-up, where you only had a certain number of hours you could use it each month, and if you went over that, you had to pay extra.
