Now that I've finished school (just a few exams remaining), I decided to drop my job at Video Ezy and start doing part-time work as a concreter (specializing in home foundations) for my Dad's concreting company. I had to wake up at 5:00 AM this morning which was a real shame, but overall the day went really well. My Dad and I left home at around 6:00 AM to go to a building supplies store to buy a new pair of steel-caps for me. We got to the site around 7:00 and met all the guys. My Dad and his company had already finished pouring all the concrete, it was just the finishing touches that had to be done. My first task was to stand on the concrete slab and squirt it down continually while my Dad ran over them with a trowel machine to put a nice finish on the concrete. I then started screeding (smoothing and leveling) some of the smaller sections that were quite uneven with a few other guys. That was really hard, worked my arm pretty well and took about 2 hours overall. By this time I was already covered in mud and concrete. After the slab was all smoothed over I did a bit of cleaning up around the site and annoyingly was forced to clean up a woman's driveway that we got mud all over while working. I also got to pressure clean some of the machinery which was just plain awesome (pressure cleaners are so much fun!). By the time we finished up at that site it was around 11:00 AM. My Dad and a few other guys went of to another site while I hitched a ride with one of the guy's to yet another site. I met some more of my Dad's workers and then got back to work at the new site. At this site, we had to do steel-fixing to prepare the site to be poured over with the necessary concrete. The trenches were already dug and lined with plastic, so our job was the set up an intricate design of steel rods and mesh over the trenches. Its an incredibly difficult procedure to explain so I'll try to keep it simple. First we got a huge number of steel rods and lined them across the trenches. We then had to get small pieces of wire and tie all the rods together, along with a large array of metallic objects that also had to be tied to the steel rods. After all that was done, we sunk some of the rods down into the trenches, leaving only two layers of rods remaining on the surface. We then placed mesh over the whole site, readying it for the pour. The mesh also had to be tied down with wire, which took a ridiculously long time. It should be noted that by the end of the day my blue jeans were almost completely covered in mud. I finished up around 4:00 PM, drove home, had a long shower and fell asleep. It was a really long and hard day of work, but I enjoyed it quite a lot. |

Congratulations! We both work in similar fields; you work in Construction, I work in Housing.

My father works as an estimator for a concrete company. Not only that, when I was in high school I spent the one summer working for them doing what you're doing.

Sounds like a nice job, dataDyne. Are you only working there for the summer? (It's summer in Australia now, isn't it?) |

I'll be working steady hours over the summer and then doing 2 days per week while I'm in university. The wages are fantastic so the job will easily finance my needs while I'm studying. |
