OMG I'm getting so annoyed...

So I've been bidding on games on ebay lately, and you know what? Practically every auction I bid on I get outbid and the auction ends like 25-50 cents above my bid. Sooooo annoying...

For those who use ebay: Does this happen to you often?

It ends a few cents above your bid because of the way eBay's system works.

You bid: $5.00
I bid: $10,000

I win for $5.50 (or whatever the minimum bid is + your bid)

People frequently try to snatch items seconds before the auction ends by bidding a somewhat high price to defeat someone who only bid reasonably. You generally have to bid more than you want to pay to win. The best thing to do is wait and watch, then pounce on it. It's also a good idea to know what the thing is worth. Almost never will you end up paying your maximum bid (in fact, I think it's impossible).

You can also wait for only Buy-It-Now items. The item you're looking for will come up as one... eventually.

Sounds like a good method. I think I'll try it.

Sometimes you'll find Buy-It-Now prices that are less than the average selling price for auctions. The only problem with them is that they are usually from "eBay stores", which can have high shipping charges, slow ship times, indifference for negative feedback because they've received thousands of positives, and a host of other problems.

Seriously though, the behavioral pattern of eBay is incomprehensible. Just when you think you've found a connection, something new pops up and destroys your theory.
