How do you feel about Kevin Rudd winning the election? I'm a strong Liberal supporter so it was a real shame to see them lose after being in office for such a long time, but I'm sure the Labor government is more than capable of governing the country effectively. I just hope they can still keep Australia in full employment. Opinions please.

I think the title of this topic conveys that well enough... <_< data: I can't say I've been following the Australian election at all, but I understand your doubts over the new government. Our previous Prime Minister (Tony Blair) stood down earlier this year after a period of ten years in office. I believe John Howard was PM for 11 years. It's always a bit disconcerting when there's a new leader, unless the "old" leader has been hated (I dunno if this applies). Anyway, our new PM (Gordon Brown) is crap. Blair may have been a liar but at least he had charisma. Gordon Brown seems well out of his depth, and he can't even manage a semi-convincing smile and he can do a smug grin a little bit too easily. Yeah, I wouldn't trust the guy as far as I could throw him... which wouldn't be very far (he ain't thin)! So what's your impressions of the new Australian PM? |

Well John Howard was very well liked for the majority of his career, but unfortunately he implemented a few unpopular policies during the last two years that proved fatal for his Party. For example, he created new workplace policies called WorkChoices which basically meant that employers could unfairly dismiss their employees and reduce wages. He eventually tried to reverse his actions towards the end of the election campaign but by then it was too late. But despite this I'm a strong supporter of both him and the Liberal Party so I'm quite upset about him losing the election. Another reason why it's so sad to see him go is the fact that he's been the Prime Minister for almost 12 years. Being only 17 I can hardly remember a time when John Howard wasn't Prime Minister, so it's a real shock to turn on the TV and see somebody else sitting in his seat. The new Prime Minster, Kevin Rudd, isn't all that bad. However, he's very unexperienced (he's only been the leader of the Labor party for 11 months) which makes me a little nervous. He has a few great policies such as the abolishment of unfair dismissal and the signing of the Kyoto Protocol, but I have very mixed feelings about him. During the months leading up to the election, all he did was criticise John Howard's mistakes and didn't actually give the Australian public substantial insight into his political views. This is why I'm so shocked that he got elected - Australia hardly knows anything about him! Our economy is better than it ever has been before thanks to the John Howard so I truly hope Kevin Rudd doesn't make a mess of things. Plus the new deputy Prime Minister is an ex-member of a Communist party.

The biggest issue in this election were (as mentioned before) the Liberal's WorkChoices policy, which approved unfair hours, unfair dismissal and large wage cuts. The economy improved as a result of this and over 400,000 new jobs were created, but the workers cried foul (and rightfully so). This is most likely the reason why the John Howard and the Liberals lost the election after being in power for such a long time. Another big issue was climate change. John Howard simply didn't care about the issues surrounding climate change and didn't do anything about it, which lost him a lot of popularity. Kevin Rudd and the Labor Party are very dedicated to tackling climate change, which gained them a lot of support. The last big issue was reconciliation between Indigenous Australians and us European Australians. John Howard refused to apologise to Indigenous Australians for decades of slavery and child abduction (known as the Stolen Generation). This put a real strain and the relationship between the two groups of people and resulted in further substance abuse amongst Indigenous people. Thousands of people criticised John Howard for this. Kevin Rudd is instead very supportive of reconciliation which earned him the support of many Australians. |

John Howard was a knob. If I had a vote, I'd vote for which ever one removes the travesty that is Australian Sportcentre. |
