Disaster Report is a fun little game of the survival action genre. No horror here, and I welcomed that. I'm surprised there haven't been more games that utilize the survival aspect of this kind of game without having some zombie/horror subject matter involved, too. In this game you play Keith Helm, a reporter who is coming to Capital City for his first day of work at the Town Crier newspaper. Capital City is a work of modern technical wonder, a city of 400,000 sitting on a small outcropping of rocks known as Stiver Island. Unfortunately, as Keith is making his way to the island on the bridge that connects it to the mainland, a massive earthquake strikes and sends the entire city into chaos. Keith is forced to continue to the island on foot, encounters a few survivors and attempts to make it to different evacuation locales while unearthing a mystery that implicates a devious reason for the earthquake and following tremors.

Graphics - 6/10

Nothing to write home about here, but they're still passable enough to produce a lot of intense and surprising moments. But it's about what you'd expect from a game released at $20.

Sound - 8/10

Once again, passable enough for the action in the game. There are a lot of really decent sound effects, such as fire and wind, and of course the rumbling of aftershock tremors that strike left and right during the game.

Control - 7/10

The controls are pretty fair, but they suffer from the typical action game complaints such as being touchy at the worst possible times. Standard stuff in terms of actions: there are buttons for running, bracing yourself during tremors and accessing your backpack of items. There is a function for combining items to create new ones, but I honestly never used it so it's not vital to the completion of the game.

Gameplay - 8/10

This follows all the normal formulas of the survival horror game, minus the horror. You still have to find items, documents, pictures and whatnot to progress through the game. You also find and help to rescue a few people as well as a little puppy dog. This is a lot of exploration and running around finding dead ends as well as the way to go. It's very linear and it would be hard to get stuck in this game not knowing where to go. I particularly enjoyed the sporadic 'run or die' moments of the game, where you are running, trying to avoid falling debris or whatever, and staying just one footstep ahead of the danger. Good times.

Overall - 8/10

This is a great game for the price and type of game. I really enjoyed it despite taking less than six hours to beat. It would be nice if it were longer, but you get what you pay for. Thankfully there is a sequel which I hope will be every bit as fun. It's called Raw Danger and I will be starting that game soon. Stay tuned for the review of that one, and in the meantime, find Disaster Report and give it a try. You might just be pleasantly surprised.
