GUN is an extremely fun action-adventure game that can only be described as Grand Theft Auto: Old West, as much of it's gameplay is patterned after the extremely popular series. It's free-roaming, gunslinger action at it's best. If you liked Red Dead Revolver, you'll LOVE this game. Graphics - 8.5/10 While there are some areas of the game that start to look repetitive, for the most part the graphics are pretty good. The entire game map is supposed to depict several states and areas of the West, but you can go from one end of the world to the other in a few minutes while on a horse. Still, every area is graphically depicted quite accurately and you can really sense your place on the map. Oh, and blood from being shot and whatnot looks pretty damn good! Sound - 9/10 Ambient sound, weapon blasts and animal noises are all very well done. The voice acting and music are top-notch. I've always loved Old West music and it's no slouch in this game. And the voice cast includes Thomas Jane, Kris Kristofferson, Lance Henriksen, Brad Dourif, Ron Perlman and Tom Skerritt. Pretty much all of whom have unique voices, as well as previous voice acting credits and Western movies under their belts. Very good stuff here. Control - 8/10 The controls for the game are pretty easy to understand. You are armed with guns that you can switch as needed. You can run and gun, but you can also ride a horse to travel quicker, and you are able to have gunfights while on your steed. You can also grab people and use them as shields, but if you do that too much and are responsible for too many innocent deaths, the local authorities send out a party to try to eliminate you. You can purchase a blade you'll use for scalping, although the scalping serves no other purpose than for some gruesome fun. It was supposed to be a system of commerce with the Native Americans you encounter during the game but due to a rushed schedule, the system was scrapped and the scalping animation remained, for fun, as stated before. Another fun touch is the fact that you have to swig some whiskey to replenish health. Very Old West, indeed. Gameplay - 9/10 As stated at the beginning of the review, this game is totally out of GTA's playbook, but that's cool, because the GTA games are awesome and they are bound to inspire many imitators. I love the whole Old West theme for this style of game. You get to play the main character's storyline, but along the way you get to tackle all kinds of side quests and secondary tales, such as hunting, law enforcement, bounty hunting and poker games. The game also possesses an impressive bullet-time effect when your 'quickdraw' gauge is filled. It gives you unlimited ammo during a short time with slowed down enemies. It's pretty fun and gives you a slight advantage when going up against several enemies at once. Overall - 9/10 This is a very fun game, albeit a little on the short side. Still, I find myself coming back to this story on a regular basis. Your character, Colton 'Cole' White, starts off as a hunter working with his father along the shore of the Missouri River. But an unfortunate incident aboard a steamboat causes Cole to lose his father, who actually admits that he isn't Cole's father before succumbing to his injuries and dying. This leads Cole to seek out the truth behind the man he knew as his father and why he lied about his identity. The story takes you to Kansas and several points west. With all the side missions and quests, you can extend the game experience, but overall it is a little on the short side, and that's what kept this from scoring a 10 out of 10 with me. Perhaps one day the rumored sequel will release and expand on everything this first effort brought to the table. |
