for the last month i've been playing top gear rally. first few seasons are the hardest since you drive these slow cars. it's hard to finish in the points, let alone finish first. but when you start getting the porsche - style model, and you get the hang of the car setup, you're really on a roll and the victories start flowing in. it's delicious to go full speed in corners and slide your way through them (without hitting the concrete walls, lol). it's hard but very satisfying. all the gran turismos of this world can not replicate the sublime racing experience of this game. sure, the game has only some fantasy cars, and only 5 tracks, but man is this game a blast to play. still havent got the fifth level by the way!

but now, after receiving my CIB indy, i'm playing this game. it's so mind blowingly awesome. its much better than tomb raider. i play it on a PAL N64 with the blaze universal V4 converter. best textures on the N64, huge worlds. i've only experienced one freeze and i play it a lot. a thrilling challenge

duke nukem zero hour

i've been playing this game on and off for the last 10 years. I spent weeks, months trying to finish just one level. not only are the puzzles hard (in terms of finding the switches and keys) but also the game is :cussfit: hard.

just finished "the brothers nukem" which is just insane. after each beaten enemy my health was depleted to 30 % (you fight uber strong duke clones). only advancing meters at a time. but now, i've finally beaten it and it's just the most amazing feeling 8) two more levels to go and i've finally beaten this brilliant game. but then still, i've to search for the hidden time machine parts, find all the babes and secret rooms. the replayability is almost infinite. shooting aliens never gets old. 8) the best third party title for the N64 for sure. i like everything about it, even the boxart. it's a work of art 8)

right now i'm running through donkey kong 64. I never finished that game, i only ever got to the frantic factory level. now i'm playing the gloomy galleon level. it's awesome! 8) i'm trying to get as many golden bananas as possible before going through the next level, i take my time for this game. it's a real project to finish it, the game is so huge! very underrated, even for a rare game

throw in some perfect dark in between DK sessions, for good measure. this is an awesome pick up and play game. i really like the carrington level, has a very goldeneye feel to it 8) perfect dark is another massive game. i'm only just starting to see the scope of it. like using the "combat boost" to save the hostages....awesome. like metal gear solid 3, you have to play this game lots and lots to get full effect of the gameplay. they dont make games like these anymore. 8) i used to dislike this game compared to goldeneye, but now i'm starting to really grow to this game

currently playing:

perfect dark: the skedar planet and chicago streets are way better than i remember them. it seems i didnt gave this game enough time the first time through. there are so many different strategies to tackle the levels, much in the same way as the MGS series. weapons have secondary options that come in handy in different situtations. there are lots of easter eggs. and the levels are very atmospheric, and so is the sound which equals goldeneye in its atmosphere. there is just something in the way the levels are drawn, that is really cool. this game has easily the best graphics on the N64, and with the expansion pack it even looks good on HD televisions due to the higher resolution.
I feel i havent even scratched the surface of this incredibly game, as i have yet to conquer secret agent and perfect agent (i dont think i ever beaten perfect agent), i havent touched combat simulator yet, and havent played mutiplayer with bots yet. there is so much i have yet to discover, yet i have played this game so much in the past (mostly single player)

duke nukem zero hour: i cant stress enough how great this game is. if anything, it is HUGE. every level easily lasts half an hour, and there are lots of them. there is lots of shooting action and you are able to carry plenty of weapons and what have you. there are two secret levels which i have yet to discover. and high res mode is incredible, and the framerate is waaaaaay better than some make of it. i always play it on high res and it is very much playable.

Been playing Rogue Squadron. I'm stuck on the Prisons of Kessel mission. It's basically an escort mission. But I keep losing the ship on the last prison. Grr. Going to take a break and try again tomorrow.

Factor 5 did some pretty amazing stuff with this game. Shadows, lighting effects, hi-res mode. But not without sacrifice. The fog is thick with this one. It's forgivable though for all it achieves is pretty much every other area. It's one of the few "eye candy" games of the era that has aged fairly well.

Now if I can just get BETTER at it!

spent the last couple of days revisiting the world of banjo kazooie

it was absent from my collection since the year 2000, and now i got it back.

i'll never know what took me so long. this game is one of the best games on the N64.

everything about this game is pure gold. the humour, the graphics. what a brilliant piece of multimedia. it's a work of art.

a small tip: play this on a funtastic console. the graphics are super crispy sharp. once you've seen the sharpness of the funtastic on a CRT, you'll never go back to charcoal. the rumours are true! :D looks like friggin dreamcast graphics

i've played some "TWINE", and got my :donkey: kicked. every level is a challenge, even for me who completed goldeneye on 00 agent. there are many puzzle elements in the single player mode. i'm conflicted about the single player being better / worse or equal to that of goldeneye. one moment i think its brilliant, the other moment i want to throw my controller through the window. one could be mistaken this has a short singleplayer, with it having "only" 14 levels as opposed to the 20 levels of goldeneye. but goldenye had some recycled levels, and some levels were cheaply short (runway, bunker I, dam,...). with TWINE, every level is unique, and long. at the very least this is a classic, a must own, a must play.

also still planning on collecting everything on banjo kazooie. some of these levels i'm playing for the first time in my life. i can never get enough of this game!

i've also played some lylat wars, F1WGP and duke nukem zero hour.

you will have noticed i named 5 games. these 5 games combined, are better than anything i've played on a nintendo console since the end of the N64.

i'll never know why i ever bothered with consoles like the PS3, wii and PS2. those consoles are lacking. they dont have anything like banjo kazooie, not even the PS2 with its 800-ish games. i HATE modern gaming. what the hell happened? where are all the great game developers? *sigh*

currently playing lamborghini 64.

this game is impossible. i'm trying to finish arcade pro series, but on the third track i'm always running out of time no matter how good i drive. and I'm running perfect rounds, driving pole position for most of the race.

i mastered f zero GX, gran turismo 5, wave race, you name it. but this game kicks my :donkey: everytime. and this game is supposed to be easy?

@Kreuzart: If you manage to beat Body Harvest don't forget to let us know it for the Beat 'Em All contest ;)
italia,

progress is very slow. you'd think this game is easy but finishing the harder races is near impossible. but strangely i can't put the game away. I MUST have that ferrari F50  :P

with my N64 collection of yesteryear restored, and having bought all the games i wanted but never got, i'm now focusing on games that werent part of my initial collection. these games are:

donkey kong 64
rogue squadron
duke nukem zero hour
banjo tooie
majora's mask
Quake II
world driver championship
F1 racing championship
castlevania legacy of darkness
shadow man
resident evil 2
indiana jones

in rogue squadron, i'm currently at the "raid on sullust" level. man is this game hard in the later levels. i thought this was gonna be the last level in the game but a quick look at a walkthourgh reveals there are still 5 levels to follow. has anyone around here beaten that game without cheats?

legacy of darkness, i've beaten the first two campaigns. i'm now playing through the game with schneider but i've put the game on hold

i'm playing shadow man mostly these days. this is a difficult metroidvania. it's the "symphony of the night" of the N64. the metroid we never got. but progress is slow

duke nukem zero hour, i've technically finished but i still need to find the last secret level "titanic"

resident evil 2 finished leon chapter, now on to claire.

indiana jones is just insanely big. my guess at this point, its even bigger than shadow man. a gargantuan challenge. not sure ill ever beat this.

majora's mask, another hard game to plow through.

banjo tooie, only scratched the surface thus far

=> what i'm trying to say here is, these games can last me a lifetime still. this was when games were still a genuine challenge. i'm experiencing these games for the first time, and i already have a generation's worth of N64 experience behind me. anyone who claims the N64 has no good games apart from mario, zelda and goldeneye, just hasnt put enough love into the N64

@Durnaxe
Nice Job and some great achievements you ger! Congratulations.
Nice to read that you beaten even games like Hybrid Heaven and Battle for Naboo.
I too beaten these two games this year and yes, I completely agree with you about Hybrid Heaven, is an amazing game. If it wasn't for the repetitiveness I would consider a 90% score game.

@Action
I love your last post haha

Duke Nukem: Zero Hour: Titanic level is very easy to find but if I don't remember wrong you have to collect all the Time Machine parts in order to make the entry appears on level 17 (I seem).
Great level by the way, there is also a nice Titanic (movie - 1997) quote :-P

Rogue Squadron: I beaten it again recently (in 2015) without using a walkthrough or any kind of cheats.
Raid on Sullust is a very hard level but you beaten yet the hardest, Escape from Fest.
Once you beat Sullust you only have to beat two other mission to complete the game (there are other additional secret levels if you want).
I beaten Sullust level flying very high, without going down, it's hard to destroy the turrets in that way but you're in safe if you never slow down ;-)
Probably I had to read a walkthrough by the way, in fact I didn't get the heat-seeking missiles so the next level (Moff Seerdon's Revenge) took me 45 minutes, as I had constantly to hit, escape, re-heal the X-Wing (closing wings in order not to be destroyed by Seerdon's missiles), hit again etc etc.
If I had the missiles the mission would it been very easier.
You'll discover what I talking about.

F1 Racing Championship: I love the game. Unfortunately I never met another lover, but if you want battle with me for the record times...you would make me happy haha.
i'm up for some F1 racing champ duelling 8)

name your track and your best time. i'll have a go at it! :) (this coming from someone who earned the sebastian vettel hidden race car in gran turismo 5 :D

You made my day!! Haha
Now I go to the cinema, later I start some laps on Monte Carlo on simulation, with Mika Hakkinen, without changing the car settings.
If you want start with these parameters! :-P
simulation? seems you're meaning business! :P

one of these days i'm popping in a session and we'll see who wins 8)

Here I am. Woody Allen movie wasn't bad, I liked Joaquin Phoenix performance 8)

Unfortunately now I can't play as I have to write something for the University zzz.

But here's a my lap on Monte Carlo recorded few months ago.
Before the video I didn't play the game since 2013, so after two years without playing I made some errors (as you can see on the Ex Loews curve, 0m43s).
As you can see some laps before I made 1'16"558. I hope to better the time.

You can save your times if you use the time trial mode ;-)

https://youtu.be/92t-ViMVal0

I think I'm going to open a record times topic on the Gaming Achievements section.
But I fear we are the only who'll play this fantastic game :-P
that's a brilliant time! i dont think i'll ever get close to it but i'll keep trying anyway :P

i've only just bought this game, it will be a great incentive to practise :)

let's play another track, same car and settings. let's play belgium, since i live there. maybe that will give me the home benefit? :D what's your best time on that track?

i've run a couple of rounds during lunch, and the best i could manage for now was 1'56"556. the record is 1'50"256, i dont know how i can shave off 6 more seconds lol. that was a "perfect" lap of mine.

tell me, did you like the controls in F1WGP italia? i think they were awkward, you had to "pull back" on the thumbstick to make sharper corners. i could never manage this game. it had great graphics and customisation though.

F1 racing championship on the other hand, has perfect responsive controls, but it also has the great graphics of f1WGP. this makes it the ultimate F1 game on N64 but it was released in very low numbers and only in PAL territory

Hi man.
I just made some laps on Spa-Francorchamps. I made 5 complete laps plus three or four aborted laps.
There is still room for improvement, as when I made the record that you see on photo, I was +0'00''501 after the inter/2. However it was a good lap: 1'47''801

I think that you use A+B simultaneously, as I used to do back in days when I bought Monaco GP. My advice is to brake much later as possible (but never too late hehe) without touching A button, exactly like in reality.
You will notice the difference ;-)

Posted Image

F-1WGP: I love the game, its graphics shocked me and I used to watch a lot the broadcast mode haha.
But the controls are much worst than Monaco GP/F-1RC.
The game surely get better when you try the champion difficult, without brake and acceleration assistance. But F-1RC it's much better, especially if you're an F-1 fan, as the driving style required is exactly the same that was in reality.

I prefer the more realistic F-1WGP2 graphics over the two F-1 Ubi Soft games graphics (obviously I don't consider F1 Pole Position haha), but I have to say that F-1RC has much clearer visuals and an higher sense of speed.
lol, i'm no where near the skill that you are, man :P

not sure if i use A and B simultaneously.

the way i do it, is as follows: I brake BEFORE the curve of the corner, and then i turn without holding A or B, and then hit A, and go full speed out of the corner in a straight line.

Nice Job EnvyFox, Mega Man 64 is a game in my backloggery, I want to beat it ;-)

I made a very fast lap on F-1RC. 1'14''679 on Monte Carlo.
Back in days I made 1'13''xxx on MGPRS2 using the Firenze, I think that it's possible even in F-1RC.
Probably is a sort of World Record I suppose haha.

Funny that the default records are made by the developers.

Posted Image
that's beyond awesome!

how do you save those times, italia? the game never asks me to create a save note on the controller pak, nor does it ever ask me to save my records. in the options i dont see a save option either

purchased a complete copy of turok 3

wow, i didnt expect this game to be THAT good.

i've heard the stories of the bland setting in new york, but to my surprise the new york levels are very atmospheric, detailed and have nice colour schemes. screenshots dont do this game justice. the framerate is fluid, draw distance is jaw dropping and textures are among the best the N64 has to offer.

some people say it has the worst graphics of the turok series, but they are factually wrong.

gone is the turok 2 level of complexity. they should have called that game metroid prime: seeds of evil in stead.

turok 3 is more straightforward, never gets frustrating and i can actually see me finishing this game (unlike turok 2 which i found impossible to finish, even in my hardcore gaming days.)

two playable characters each with their own specialities like using a grappling hook and stuff or night vision goggles. wow.

i can see why some people call this the best turok game.

... draw distance is jaw dropping and textures are among the best the .
Probably the best on the console in terms of draw distance, together with some Rareware and Factor 5 games (and Majora's Mask too).

Facial animations during cutscenes is another very nice touch

Glenn Plant is a Turok 3 fan too, here's the review
https://youtu.be/UvuSAinsAI4

Well, probably you can help me with Turok 3, in the pro/cons topic ;-)
pro

- pushes the N64 hardware yet even further
- save anywhere
- fast action, never a dull moment
- you don't get lost like in earlier titles in the series
- no more having to replay a complete level because you missed a key
- cerebral bore returns
- great draw distance
- detailed level design
- atmospheric levels
- lots of secrets to find

con
- new york setting isn't everyone's taste

i've just come home from a memorable gaming night session with 4 players. after our 3 kinds of pizza were devoured, and sipping our booze, the chaos began.

we played (in order of playing time):
- goldeneye
- perfect dark
- destruction derby 64
- mortal kombat trilogy
- mario kart 64

the goldeneye session will be remembered far into the future. it was an epic battle. we had most fun with the proximity mines. dont you just love it to corner your rival with proximity mines? lol.

good times 8)

Hell yeah!

I got so good with Proximity Mines people would refuse to play against me.
I liked to play the Bunker level and place Proxy mines not only on the respwan positions but just around the corner.
As soon as I got one kill I would get another 5 for free as they respawn.
And if they were slow about it I could go around and replace the mines 😂

Speaking of Goldeneye I just took 8 seconds off my best time for Facility on 00 Agent 😎😊
1:37 down to 1:29.

I've never really been into speed runs but for some reason this level is so appealing.
I know it's because the mystical Invincibility cheat seemed impossible to get for so many people back in the day.
I remember when a mate finally unlocked ot, would have been in late 98 or early 99 and there was a few of us in the room watching him try and it was such an achievement when he finally unlocked it.

So we celebrated by playing multiplayer with invincibility on and not being able to kill each other 😂
lol! need more practise, i'm blowing myself up at times :p

in archives, when someone would enter an office i would throw mnes on the door.
someone actually managed to survive the blast.
also, i was too good, so my fellow players conspired against me. they threw pm at me, but i managed to walk through the fire and i killed two and survived. since then i'm known as 'the terminator'. that was beyond epic 8)

can't get enough of top gear rally and it's crazy bumps on the tracks, which launch you into the air when you're hitting them too fast. especially in the mountain level; that's a crazy little course alright.

other games in the rotation:
- MK trilogy
- destruction derby 64
- doom 64
- san francisco rush
- wipeout 64
- ridge racer 64
