Icewind Dale savegame problem...; help me :(

I also made a topic on GameFAQs so there's more information there, but to summarize my problem:

- There isn't a savegame folder in the Icewind Dale directory, and it's not being created when I save new games, so I've got no clue where the game puts my new savegames, and thus: where I have to put the old savegames if I want to play them again.
- Somehow, after I uninstalled the game, the new savegames didn't disappear because they were still there when I installed it again so that must mean they are saved SOMEWHERE on this computer...
- I've used the search function, and no new .SAV files are found ANYWHERE on my computer...
- I've looked through ALL "My Documents" directories and subdirectories: nothing Icewind Dale related. I've even turned the option "show invisible files" on, but still nothing...

So... can anyone help me? I've always known a thing or two about things like this, but this problem is beyond my knowledge

That's.... odd. I have a folder called "mpsave" in the IWD install directory that contains a folder for each save.

Does the save function not work for you in the game, or are you simply having trouble locating the directory to play a backed-up save?

Locating the directory is the problem. I only made a couple of NEW savegames (in-game) to see if a folder would show up in my Icewind Dale directory containing the new savegames. And if that were the case I could put my old savegames in it, so I could play them again. But in this case, no savegame folders show up...

IIRC, when I uninstalled Icewind Dale a few years ago (when I was using a Windows 95 machine) it deleted all the files except the savegames, which I then made a back-up off. But today when I uninstalled the game, everything was gone, including the entire directory. However, when I installed it again, when I played the game, I magically still had access to my new (test) savegames!
I'm using Windows Vista now, I don't know if it has anything to do with displacing savegames or not, but the fact that my savegames were still intact after uninstalling and deleting the entire game, including subdirectories, proves to me that they HAVE TO BE at my harddrive somewhere... Now the only problem is: where do I look? :-/

I guess I shall try the search function a couple of more times, trying some advanced search options. Maybe I've still overlooked something

Vista is probably the problem. I've heard that Vista has trouble with the Infinity Engine, but I've never really looked into this. You might want to ask at GameFAQs Shadows of Amn board, as that is probably the most active of the boards for games that use the IE. Someone there might have ideas.

I think I finally found them after some extensive searching! The problem was that when I searched my PC, it only searched through the indexed files <_< so I checked the box "including non-indexed, hidden and system files" and searched my entire PC again, and found them.
And I do agree it has to do with Vista, displacing my savegames!

Where did I install Icewind Dale?
C:\Program Files\Black Isle\Icewind Dale\

And where did I find my newly created savegames???
C:\Users\Jan-Willem\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files\Black Isle\Icewind Dale\mpsave\

 Where's the logic in that? Why not keep the savegames within the game directory itself, like the old-fashioned way?
Windows Vista amazes (pun definately intended!) me every time...

Anyway, looks like my problem is finally solved! ^_^

Wonderful! Have you ever finished the game? I liked it a lot the first time. The icy setting really hit the spot. I never did finish the expansions though.

Jep, I finished the original campaign and the expansion Heart of Winter, and that's why I'd like to play it again: because I have some fond memories of it :D

And I've read in some reviews a few years ago that most people consider Icewind Dale not as deep (story-wise) as Baldur's Gate. So, while I haven't finished BG (yet ;)), I'm quite interested in it because if Icewind Dale is already this good, how good can BG be? Even better? :w00t:
Only time will tell :P but I do know that I will enjoy it no matter what

What did you think of the odd surprise at the end? I thought it was kind of cheesy -- especially the part where the narrator breaks out in cliche, evil-guy laughter.

BG is far superior in the story department. They are very different games. IWD's linearity and structured battles favors tactics. BG's branching gameplay can be freeing, but I don't think it really has the tactical depth (especially once you get to high levels and can do things like summon disembodied dragon heads ^_^ ). Both games have their draws and cons, I supposed.

The writing in BG is really sharp. Even the most minor character is a joy to talk to.

Disembodied Dragon heads?
Sounds sweet! ^_^

*IWD spoilers*

At the and of Heart of Winter, your party has to fight a white/silver dragon (can't exactly remember which but it's white/silverish anyway :P). That beast's friggin' HUGE, taking up at least half of the screen X_D

*end spoilers*

And I really like dragons ^_^ but unfortunately, that's the only dragon you encounter in the entire game. I haven't played Trials of the Luremaster so don't know if there are any dragons there. Same goes for Icewind Dale 2.
So are there any dragons in BG and BG2? ^_^

And speaking about dragons: when my Neverwinter Nights character (a Wizard) reached level 20 (epic level) I got Epic Spells, so now I'm able to summon a dragon X_D

There aren't any dragons that I recall in BG1 (it's a low level game). There are three (that I can remember) in Shadows of Amn and several more in Throne of Bhaal.

I never managed to beat this guy. NWN Dragons were pushovers compared to these!

Sweet dragon ^_^

Here's the one from Heart of Winter (from my old savegame ^_^):

And I do agree that most of the NWN dragons weren't that difficult to defeat, but with the exception of Klauth the ancient red wyrm. I really had a problem with defeating him  took me several tries :P

Trying to rest in front of a dragon? Sounds safe. ^_^

Today I officially finished all my work for the semester. Perhaps I'll throw a bit of time down and finish HoW/TotLM.

I was just kiddin' around

That screenshot was from 1 of my savegames. The one with the glitch :P it had a glitch (it still did back then and it still does now).
I nearly killed the dragon (almost dead) but for some reason he just stopped attacking, and no matter how much I continued attacking him, he still wouldn't die :-/
Thank god I always used multiple savegames, otherwise I would have been screwed big time :P

And if you try HoW your party should be around level 9-10 characters. I haven't tried TotLM yet.

I think my characters are (much) higher than that. I made it to some island filled with a bunch of undead before I stopped. Last night, I was thinking about continuing, but then I started a new game in Planescape.

Guess what - it's the same with me in just this minute. I wanted to resume my old Icewind-Dale-Session, and I KNEW that the last savegame must have been a save just after I beat the Luremaster (which apparently got me exhausted so much that I needed to take a break of 2 1/2 years, I suppose ...). But when I looked in the regular mpsave-folder, there were only savegames from BEFORE I even transitioned my party to Heart of Winter (and even that took me a while to realize and a lot of deja vus while playing Dorn's Deep and onwards, everything seeming so familiar, as if I had played all that befo ... WAIT). I searched for my saves and potential backups on severals computers, usb-sticks, hard drives ... I really was on the brink of going insane over it, even suspecting I must have been hallucinating that I've already played TotL. Well, and then I found this topic here - and my saves were exact at the same place as it was the case with the OP (and just as him I really don't know why they are there and why the game did not found them there when I started it again after years). So, thank you very much!
