Graphics - 8/10

While this is a PlayStation port of a Sega CD game, the graphics are distinctly SNES-like. Ok, that's a mouthful and a purely subjective evaluation, but I associate this type of graphical style with the many awesome RPGs of the Super Nintendo era. If you've seen Chrono Trigger or Final Fantasy VI then you pretty much know what to look for here during battles or on the world map.

Sound - 9/10

I'm ranking this so high on the merits of the music alone. The normal game sound effects are pedestrian at best, but the music and voice acting are very well done. I'd rank this up behind perhaps only the FFVII soundtrack. The music is almost Disney quality at times, and I mean that in a good way. Luna's Boat Song and Wings are particular favorites, and they just happen to be the only two songs in this port that have lyrics. The original Sega CD intro theme, included on this game's soundtrack CD, is somewhat cheesy and much like an '80s power ballad. Anyway, the music is a major highlight and helps to elicit the emotions that I felt during gameplay.

Control - 9/10

There isn't much to the controls of this game, or just about any RPG for that matter. You select commands, move your character, press the X button to move the dialogue along. *Yawn* Since they didn't screw all it all up then I think it deserves a high score. Do I really need to say more?

Gameplay - 8/10

Much like the control category, this is standard roleplaying gameplay and is hard to screw up. It's nothing innovative, although at the time of the original Sega CD release it might have been. You collect items, level up your characters and fight baddies. It does implement the less often used system of seeing your enemies on the dungeon map instead of random, surprise battles. I like that since you'll at least know when a battle is about to happen. Of course, there are so many times that you cannot avoid a battle that I wonder why they even give you the 'option' of trying to elude your enemies. There is no summon system or major customizational option that I am aware of in this game so if that is something that floats your boat, expect a dry and parched reservoir.

Overall - 9/10

This scores highly with me and it's no wonder, I rank it 4th on my all-time favorite RPGs list after all. It's the story that ropes me in. It's rife with cliched elements of RPGs before and after (mysterious abandoned baby grows up to be Goddess of world, young boy saves the world and the girl, evil corrupts former hero to mega proportions and he tries to control/destroy the world, etc.) but it's the dialogue, writing and acting that I love. And it's also the love that I love, literally! This is one of gaming's greatest love stories if you ask me. Most RPGs downplay the romantic aspect of the storyline or rip it away right before it's realized with a death or some other plot device. In this game it's love that drives the story. In fact, there are no less than three active romantic relationships between the six main characters! And those relationships are all so unique and involving that you can't help but fall in love with them all, too.

Lunar: Silver Star Story Complete is just that: Complete. If you love RPGs, anime (the cutscenes are all beautifully animated), and a great story that isn't afraid to show the love, then you'll most likely love this game. And if you do, there is a sequel called Lunar 2: Eternal Blue Complete and it is almost as enjoyable as this one. Check out this Working Designs masterpiece!
