Graphics - 9/10 For a game with such a wide open world, Pandemic made a very sharp looking game. From character models to vehicles to explosions, this game looks good and shows what the PS2 is capable of. While the concept is very similar to the Grand Theft Auto games, everything looks so much better in this game. But it's most likely because the world map is still smaller than a game like San Andreas. Still, I won't discount this game at all (except for when you fly a helicopter and the ground below disappears in a thick soup of brown fog). Check out the game or screenshots for yourself and see what I mean. Sound - 9/10 The sound in this game is very good, very authentic and very immersive. Machine guns and mortar fire never sounded so good! I really felt like I was in a warzone. And due to the great voice acting, I also felt like I really was a wise cracking mercenary. Control - 8/10 Standard GTA-type control scheme, even down to hitting triangle to jack a car. Shooting, switching weapons and movement are all smooth and easy to handle (a loose automatic aim helps in the shooting department). Vehicle control leaves a little to be desired as the physics seem too floaty and it's way too easy to hit a small bump and find yourself flying through the air or in the most inconvenient direction. Choppers, on the other hand, are a delight to fly and maneuver. Gameplay - 9/10 You are a mercenary, and thus you must take contracts for money and intel on your 52 North Korean targets. Missions can be assassinations, demolition, delivery or protection, as well as many others. You get paid and paid well. The local Russian Mafia will make available to you several supply drops, vehicles and airstrikes to help you along the way. You roam the countryside in search of things to do, people to kill, weapons to use. And you can go about your missions in varied approaches. Perhaps you want to sneak along and only take out the one you were hired to kill? Do it. Or maybe you like the 'balls to the wall' approach and want to blow it all up? Then do it! It's so much fun to try a different approach from time to time. Overall - 9/10 This game is sick. This is the perfect game to play to blow off steam. Blow stuff up, sneak around, assassinate those who stand in your way. There is so much to do, and I haven't even mentioned the national treasures and blueprints you can find along the way, or the statues and listening posts you have to destroy that are spread throughout the Korean countryside. I think the only problem I have with the game is that the AI sometimes costs you a full bounty on the 'cards' you pursue by sometimes blowing them away before you can capture them alive. Frustrating, but that's the only knock on the game I have. Playground of Destruction? There isn't a more apt title for this game. Lock and load! |
