Lost is probably the most infuriating game I've played in a long time. I actually hated this game by the time I'd finished playing it and it's put me off ever watching the TV series because the story was just so bad.

So, you start off as some nobody character whose plane mysteriously breaks up in flight and you end up on an island. Everyone you speak to is a total douche bag who needs slapped. "Oooh, look at me acting all mysterious" they try hard to avoid saying whilst at the same time trying to act all mysterious. Hmmm, could this game be trying to engross me in its mystery? Well, it failed due to the story being utter crap and being so unbelievably scripted.

The island is just as mysterious as the characters; there is an impenetrable wall around the area that you cannot get past. Why the **** not? I'm on the beautiful beach and I can't even dip my toes in the water? Also, the wreckage from the plane has piled up in convenient spots to stop me from leaving the one really small area on the beach. Whilst on the beach you can collect items to trade with other characters, although you need to be looking directly at the item to be able pick it up. Yeah, you can’t just walk over them (because you won’t be able to see them that way as you can’t look directly down) so stand a few feet away and then you can pick up stuff.

Your character is suffering from total lack of imagination memory loss so it’s up to you to find out about his dull and uninteresting past. When you finish certain conversations you have flashbacks but before you can properly see the flashback you need to photograph certain things (because you’re a photo journalist… of course). The game doesn’t tell you what to photograph, so you need to guess based on what’s been said already or just trial and error. You also need to get the timing, framing and focus just right otherwise you just keep seeing the same flashback over and over. And that’s really annoying.

You might get bored of this and switch off. I did, but I wouldn’t recommend it if you intend to play the game again. You see, every time you start the game or a new “episode” of the game, you need to watch a long drawn-out cutscene. “Previously on Lost” the commentator will say and then you watch clips from the game that you’ve already seen in previous chapters.

And you can’t skip them.

And if you die, you’re forced to watch them again.

And sometimes they get stuck in a loop and play more than once. I wish I was kidding.

It’s so dull that you’ll just get bored and do something else, but sadly there’s a few chapters where if you don’t move straight away you get killed. And then guess what you need to watch yet again… >_<

So, photograph the right thing and then you can relive the flashback. In each flashback you need to find three items to jog your memory then speak with a character. That’s it. Just get it over with.

Gameplay throughout is limited to speaking with characters, fetch quests and trying to stave off boredom. Some highlights include following markers through a jungle, following flags through a jungle, navigating through caves in total darkness and following flags through a jungle whilst trying to avoid a cloud of black smoke (which is meant to be some kind of monster). My personal favorite is trying to navigate whilst carrying dynamite because you can’t run from the black smoke (sorry, I mean scary monster) and each time you hide you’ll become totally disorientated. The key to success it to walk to a hiding spot, wait for the “monster” to show up, wait for it to go away again, leave the hiding spot, try to pinpoint your location in a jungle where everything looks the same, then try to navigate to the next hiding spot. Isn’t waiting so much fun?

One good thing about this game is that it’s short; probably about four or five hours at most. If you’re into the whole Xbox 360 achievement thing then this game might be for you; getting the full 1000 achievement points is ridiculously easy and takes very little time. I dunno what else to say about the game… the graphics are okay, the story’s crap, the gameplay varies between average and terrible. The game has about ten areas which you can explore... wow! I guess there are some puzzles which are enjoyable but not enough to make playing this worthwhile. If you paid full price for this game then I feel sorry for you and sincerely hope you managed to get your money back.

If you like Lost (the TV series) this game might be worth a rental but only if you really, really liked the series. And even then the game will probably leave you feeling disappointed and bored.

3/10.
