Graphics - 7/10

Legend of Legaia employs a completely 3D and polygonal graphical interface, which means that everything everywhere is 3D. Since the game is on the PlayStation and it has limited processor power, the graphics are a little lacking. But I don't think it takes anything away from the game and it helped to set it apart from a lot of other RPGs at the time. I especially like the battle scene graphics, as they really detailed and articulated the players. And the cutscenes were pretty impressive for the time.

Sound - 7/10

The sounds and music of Legend of Legaia are pretty standard stuff. Nothing really stands out for me, but none of it turns me off either. I was thinking about it just today and I think some RPGs focus more time, money and effort towards money while others don't. This was one that didn't. No one song really stands out, although having a soundtrack CD for it would probably help me in that effort. Every RPG that I have a soundtrack for has ended up having at least one standout track. Perhaps I should try to locate one for LoL.

Control - 8/10

I've said it before and I'll say it again, there isn't much to the controls of an RPG. Moving, interacting with things or people, battle commands, it's all pretty basic. Even the battle commands are simple even though they might seem complicated at first.

Gameplay - 8/10

Mostly standard RPG fare, except with how the battles play out. Battles in Legend of Legaia still have a turn-based mechanic to them, but much like Xenogears, they play out like a fighting game. Only there are zero giant mechs in LoL. As you string attacks (kicks, punches) together, you can perform Arts, which are like special moves or combos in fighting games. Some of the higher level Arts, called Hyper Arts, Super Arts and Miracle Arts, deal out incredible amounts of damage. You have to learn these Arts by experimenting with different sequences of attack commands. It's always fun to learn a new one during a battle just by pressing random buttons.

Overall - 9/10

This a really fun game that sits high on my own personal games list, and it's mainly because of it's storyline. While it might just seem like a typical RPG along with a hundred other ones, the aspect of it's story that I enjoy so much is the Mist. A mysterious Mist covers the land and everyone wearing a Seru has turned into a monster. The Mist also causes other things to become monsters and therefore it is highly recommended that humans avoid the Mist. But of course this wouldn't be an adventure if it wasn't for a need to clear the land of the Mist and free the people who have become changed. And it's always so personally redeeming to clear an area of the Mist and then return to talk and interact with the people who were trapped before. Makes searching out the next Mist covered area and returning after clearing the Mist all the more inspiring! Great game!
