Graphics - 8/10

To me, this game looks incredible. For the time and console it was incredible. I welcome the transition to 3D in the Zelda series even though I am a huge fan of A Link To The Past. I think OoT feels more real and immersive and engaging in this look and feel. While not as pixelated as a PS1 game of the same era, I was never a real fan of the blurry look to ground, wall and other textures in this and other N64 games. Still, this is superior to most PlayStation games in the visual category.

Sound - 8/10

I'm impressed with the sounds that come off the cartridge, but it is disappointing that there is very little voicework in the game. But I'll get over it every time I hear water running in a stream, neighing Epona, or the ocarina playing a wondrous tune. It's pretty amazing what they were able to pull off on a cartridge.

Control - 8/10

Nothing to really complain about here. There may have been a few times when the camera moved awkwardly and caused me to go the wrong way but that's typical of 3D adventure games. Still, it's a 3D Hyrule that you get to explore and just live and breathe in! What's better than that? Bow and arrows, swordfighting, horse riding, it's all pretty well done.

Gameplay - 9/10

Saving the world and the girl is pretty tough work but when it's as fun as it is in Ocarina of Time then who cares, right? The game is epic and feels epic. You explore every inch of the world, you capture ghosts, you kill various kinds of weird enemies and you travel through time! The time-shifting aspect of the game is fun and allows you to see how things change through your actions. It's fun to interact with people who you just saw moments before but they haven't seen your character in seven years. It's a neat spin on a mechanic seen many times before where you can see items in unreachable areas of the level that you can only get seven years later when you're grown up.

Overall - 10/10

A perfect score, despite none of the other categories attaining that rank. Why, you ask? Because as a whole this game far surpasses most other games in fun, story and challenge. It is a part of my top 10 games list of all-time, that's how much it means to me. Zelda games are timeless and a few of them are amongst the highest selling games of all-time. It's a worthy adventure and an innovative game of it's time. There are games today being made with new technology that can't even scratch the surface of what The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time presented us with ten years ago. And that's saying something.

A (9.0-10.0)- excellent
B (7.9-8.9)- good
C (6.8-7.8)- average
D (5.7-6.7)- bad
F (0.0-5.6)- awful

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (OoT), Nintendo 64 (N64)

Gameplay (1/3): 9.0
* Depth
+ Tons to do between temples (main story) and side activities.
- Side activities and NPC's are shallow. Once you've collected all items and beaten the game, there's not much incentive to replay.
* Speed (Pace)-
+ You can take your time or rush right through it. It's up to you.
* Difficulty
Controls
- A bit clumsy. No jump button.
+ Fairly tight, especially with z-targeting.
Direction
+ You rarely ever don't know what to do next thanks (mixed blessing) to your fairy guide.
Challenge
+ Easy to moderate.
Critic's Voice (Enjoyment)-
- Apart from the temples, there's nothing of substantial interest to see (see visuals: depth).
+ Riding Epona and the swordplay.

Visuals (1/3): 7.8
* Depth (Complexity)
- Sectioned off, small areas. Barren overworld with billboard walls box you in even more.
+ Detailed. Abundant lighting. Realistic light effects. Realistic animations. Rain.
* Speed (Framerate)
- Framerate seems under 30 fps (sluggish).
+ Framerate is constant. Speed is mostly smooth.
* Clarity
Draw distance
+ Nearly perfect.
Definition
- Overall picture is soft, even for a low-res N64 game. Most textures are dithered.
Critic's Voice (Aesthetics)
+ Somewhat atmospheric. Main characters are striking.
- Overall ugly: atrocious color palette and many bad textures. Boxed in areas and barren overworld ruin sense of realism.
Unacceptable for a Nintendo-made game 2 years in development, with better Nintendo-N64 visuals predating OoT (e.g. Super Mario 64, Starfox 64).
After playing Castlevania 64, I still think it looks better. I'm practically begging for just stretched, filtered low res textures (sans poor texture design and color)

Presentation (1/6): 8.7
* Layout (Menus)-
- Fairly bland.
* Story
Content
- Infantile.
+ Mature vocabulary.
Execution (Cutscenes)-
+ Somewhat moving and deep. Cinematic.
Sound (1/6): 7.8
* Depth (Complexity)-
- Childishly simple ocarina melodies that all sound alike.
+ The non-ocarina-based music. Sound effects are realistic and atmospheric.
* Clarity (Sound Quality)-
- The MIDI music sounds more flat and thick (fake) than usual (e.g. Starfox 64).
Critic's Voice (Aesthetics)
- Bland composition and horrible MIDI.
+ Immersive sound effects.

Final Score, Grade: 8.4, B (Good)
