I think you should give people a month to write their reviews. Someone might be extremely busy one week, and have lots of free time in another. In a month, it should be a fair amount of time for everyone to work with.

As for word count, I think the minimum should be 400, and the maximum 700.

I'd do ExciteBike.

All that said, I still haven't decided if I want to participate.

Winner of the n64 contests? Heck, no. Not EVERYONE likes that specific game. Anybody should be allowed to do ANY game.

I'll probably do WWF No Mercy or Wrestlemania 2000.

Does any game mean any system?

I will write a review of Icewind Dale -- using only haikus!

This is IN the "Member Reviews of N64 Games and Accessories" forum, so I presume it's n64 only.

Clearly Hydronix came up with this idea, and is working out trying to make it happen, so please direct all questions to him. I'm sure that he'll answer them and then some in one of his monthly visits.

Well, I'm still going to do a review for Icewind Dale in haiku! Like...

Snow and dire ice
Goblins from the north with swords
Battles in the frost...

Gameplay is pretty
good. Music is great, and yet
the graphics are old...

I've read the Icewind Dale series by R.A. Salvatore but never played the game. Your haiku has really filled me in on it, though. ^_^

You mean bi-weekly visits.(twice a week, probably the wrong term)

Anyway, technically, it wasn't my idea, but I just added some good ideas for the rules.

Just because I'm a good judge etc. doesn't mean I was planning on running it...

So... is there a set date yet for when the reviews need to be submitted? Would it be ok to have the reviews PMed to you by each author, then you can make one topic that has all of the reviews in it with the poll at the top?

I rather like that idea. Basically, each review should be no longer than a post. In this topic, say what game you'll review so we have no repeats. Everybody got that? Good.

Now get ready to review!

I'm kind of confused as to who is running this thing, but heres what I think it should be:

Post your review as you normally would. I'll create a topic where you post a link to the review. After the deadline for reviews to be submitted I'll make a new topic with links to each review, as well as my commentaries on each one. This topic will also be a poll, where people can vote for the best one. You must say who you vote for,a nd why, as to prevent people from voting for their own review as well as to get some constuctive criticism flowing.

Todays the third, so I think two weeks might be a suitable deadline. So Saturday, the 17th, at 9:00 PM EST deadline sound good to everyone?

I'm gone the 16th, 17th, and 18th, so it's not too fair for me. Fact of the matter is, it's easier for me to run it because of that. Fire & Ice Gaming Convention, baby.

Anyway, StYoung, it's your call.

What are you talking about? I reviewed Icewind Dale! I demand a recount and/or the formation of an investigatory committee -- this could be the scandal that ends Raqueda's reign of terror, to be replaced by Alxbly's reign of terror.

Deku Links Review of: Super Smash Bros. by Deku Link

First of all I believe that reviews should be written in paragraph form. Doing this makes the piece flow togethor more and also allows the review to be more creative throughout the writing process. If you don't know what I mean by paragraph style check out any of the reviews at Honest Gamers.

As far as your review goes you really need to proofread your work and run it through a spell checker. Below I'll go through your review line by line and place any corrections in red, following your original sentence.

Well the first of my reviews so I’m starting off with a classic. This should read "Well this is the first of my reviews so I decided to start with a classic" or something along those lines. The purpose of these reviews is to help people buy games they might have missed and for the collectors if they've never had the chance to buy it. First off a collector really wouldn't need to hear your opinion on a game to purchase it as, being a collector, he/she would go after any Nintendo 64 game he/she knows of. Also, being a collector, he/she would already know which are the better Nintendo 64 games. So anyway, on with the review! You actually should get rid of this whole paragraph. Introductions to reviews that talk about the review number, or the reviewer, are generally frowned upon as they add no substantial value to said review.Note: the prices are prices of the game used at MY local game store chain so the prices should be somewhere similar (in USD). This should be placed at the end of the review, or where you list the price. You should always start reviews with something interesting in order to draw in the reader so he/she doesn't hit that "Back" button before learning anything from your piece

Stars are ranked as 1 being low and 5 being high As stated before reviews should be written in paragraph form. If you choose to not write in said form this sentence is pointless anyway, as its common knowledge that five stars are better than one.
Screens were taken form an emulator and some effects may be missing. This also really isn't needed, but if you insist on including it put it at the end and instead begin the review with something interesting as stated earlier..

Our Game Today is: Super Smash Bros. This is a terrible introduction sentence as it is both not the least bit interesting but also because it is completely useless considering the title screen that reads "Super Smash Bros." is directly aboce it and the game being reviewed is in the title of the topic. The game was released on April 26 1999 in the US and November 19 1999 For the PAL region. Release dates shouldn't be in reviews. If you are still going to include this not that you have a continuity problem seeing as it says "released on April 26 1999 in the US" and "November 19 1999 For the PAL region." Change the for to in. Also note the it should be PAL regions, not region. This Game Features 8 Nintendo heroes(Mario DK Link Samus Yoshi Kirby Fox and Pikachu) fighting it out in a FOUR player fighting game! Spell out eight. Use a dash to offset the character names instead of parenthesis as parenthesis are used for "skippable" information. Use commas between the character's names and spell out Donkey Kong. It might also be a good idea to type a small background up for each characters insread of just saying their Nintendo heroes. Also note the Donkey Kong could be viewed as a Nintendo villian if based on the original Super Mario arcade game. You shouldn't use fighting twice in the same sentence. Try "battling it out in a four player fighting game".

Price (USED): $24.99USD (Unfair....) This entire section should be included in the introduction or just not at all. The rating, rumble compatability, and price aren't really important.
Rarity*** (3 out of 5 stars) A pretty rare find and higher price than most Don't judge rarity on price.
1 to 4 players This is already stated in the introduction
Rumble Pak Compatible This is not needed
ESRB Rating: E (Characters fighting with cartoon style weapons) This is not needed.

All in all that entire section should be taken out

Story* (1 out of 5 stars) As stated earlier paragraphs are better than sectioned reviews.
This game does not have very much of a story going for it. All it is dolls fighting for no reason so there’s no story. It is a common rule that if the game is in a genre that doesn't require a story (racing, puzzle, sports, fighting) than it doesn't require a story section, or mention if in paragraph form.

Graphics*** (3 out of 5 stars)
The graphics for this game were OK for the time but now they haven't aged well and look basic compared to the Gamecube version. Graphics should be compared to the system that the game is on, as currently any game that isn't on the Xbox 360, PS3, or high-end PC looks bad in comparison. The only reason a game's graphics should be compared to a differant console is if your comparing two same-generation games. Everyone looks like basic polygons and many of the games effects aren't 3d but they do look good. Details. Why do they look like polygons? What effects are in the game? Why do they look good considering they aren't in 3d? Talk about any graphical uniqueness or charm the game might have.

Sound***** (5 out of 5 Stars)
Music is good, all of the stage music is redone from the games there from and they fit in nicely. This should be two sentences, as it is two complete thoughts. "The Music is good. All of the stage's songs are redone from their original games and fit nicely" Some of the effects and voices do tend to get annoying but they don’t last. The last bit of the sentence doesn't make much sence. What effects and voices are annoying? Are most the voices good? What types of effects are there? Are there any original songs? Remember: details, details, details..

Control***** (5 out of 5 stars)
You hold the middle and right prongs in this game. Get rid of this sentence. Since the majority of N64 games are controlled in that manner it is more of a given. If you must say that the game uses the analog stick for movement. The control is flawless, in the game A is your basic attack but it can used to perform stronger attacks with the control stick. [ Two complete sentence. "The controls are flawless. A is your basic attack but it can be used to perform stronger attacks with the control stick." B is your special move, all characters get 3 special moves used by hitting the B button by itself or while holding up or down. Again, two complete thoughts. "B is your special move. All characters get three special moves which can be performed by pressing the B button by itself or in comination with the analog stick. [/color[Any of the C buttons can make you character do a jump then can be pressed again for another jump. "The C buttons are used to make your character jump. They can be pressed again to perform another jump while airborne.. The control stick moves your character and can be held or tapped along with pressing an attack button for different attacks. It is already mentioned the the analog stick is used in combination with A and B to perform other moves. The Z button puts up a bubble-like shield to protect you from damage but, unlike a fighting games block button, it wears away over time until it breaks and your character is stunned. Comma before but, not after. fighting games' block button. R grabs opponents and then you use the Stick to throw them in any direction. Analog stick, not Stick. And finally L is a taunt.
"Finally the L button is used to perform a character-specific taunt.

Game play***** (5 out of 5 stars)
The whole Point to Smash Bros is to knock your opponents off the arena kind of like Sumo Wrestling. Theres a period after Bros. Use reminiscent instead of kind of.

Don't interupt your paragraph with a picture.

However knocking your opponents off is harder than you think. "However knock offonents off is harder than you may think" You have to increase the damage % the higher it is the farther you can knock them. Type out percent. This sentence also expresses two complete thoughts. "You have to increase the damage percent; the higher it is the farther you can knock your opponents into the air. During battle various items fall down and they have a wide variety of effects, such as the Pokeballs from Pokemon that release a random Pokemon or the Hammer from Donkeys Kong which sends your character in to a frenzied rush of hammer swings. "During battle various items fall down from the sky. They have various effects such as Pokeballs that release a Pokemon or a large Hammer that sends your character into a swinging frenzy. . There are 2 game modes, 1 player mode; the 1 player training mode and 2 bonus games (Break the targets and Board the platforms) next there’s Multi Player Mode. Spell out numbers. You also used a semicolon instead of a dash. "There are two game modes - one player mode; which includes the basic single player story, training, and two bonus games (Break the Targets and Board the Platforms); and multiplayer." What's Break the Targers? Whats Board the Platforms? Whats the one player story mode like? What can yu do in training? Which is a better draw, multiplayer or singleplayer? In Multi player you can ether have a Stock (Lives) battle or a time battle or team battle using stock or time In multiplayer you can either have versus or team battles using either stock (lives) or time settings." You should note that the setting are customizable.

Replay Value*** (3 out of 5 stars)
The Game has 4 hidden characters, one hidden stage, a multiplayer option and a sound test, none of which will take long for you to unlock (most can be unlocked in less than a day or two) however the VS mode does not tie as fast as the single player modes. More than one complete thought. "The game has four hidden characters, a hidden stage, multiplayer options and a sound test. Unfortunently none of these modes take long to unlock. You could probably get them all in less than a day with serious play. Luckily the multiplayer mode will keep you coming back for more. You should also mention that the mini games offer some replay value. SSM is usually consided one of the greater replay-value games for the N64. Remember replay value is arguably based more on multiplayer factors than unlockables.

Story*
Graphics***
Sound*****
Control*****
Game Play*****
Replay Value***
TOTAL: 22

You don't really need this section. If your going to unclude it say 1/5 instead of *. Get rid of the * in general as they serve no real purpose. The total should say 22/possible points.

FINAL SCORE***** (5 out of 5 stars)
Buy, Rent, or Steer Clear: Buy OR Rent* Same as before. If your going to give it a score not based on added totals than you really don't need the aforementioned section.

This is a very good game and should not be missed. Use details to tie the closing back to the rest of the review. Even though the graphics aren't that good it does not hamper this game any even though there is no story. Get rid of the "no story" crap. "Even though the graphics aren't that good it does not hamper this game in any way". As a general literature review closing paragraphs should leave the reader with a sense of completion and also include new ideas that tie back to previous ones. This closing does neither.

* For renting: only rent this if you’re not sure if you'd like it other wise it's a buy. This is common knowledge, and is thus not needed. Also you can still rent N64 games online. If your going to say this provide a link to where you can instead of sending readers on a wild goose hunt, so to say. .

Well that’s it for my First Review! Get rid of this. Reviews are about the games, not the reviewer. All in all this closing has gone on too long without providing anything meaningful to the reader.

The pictures included throughout the review are a neat idea and make the piece feel more like a true gaming site or magazine's reviews.

If anyone else wants me to critique their review speak up. I hope Deku Link gets some help from this post as its taken me quite a bit of time to type up. Now I know how Kerr Avon feels. :-/
