I just won Shadow of the Colossus on eBay! 36 euros for a mint condition copy with all the art cards, manual, box etc. I think that's a pretty good deal, seeing that back when it was still available in stores here it used to cost 60-65 euros (and it never got a price drop).

Instant win. SotC is amazing... post here again when you've had a chance to play it. :D
OK... that took a long time but I finally gave SOTC some serious playing time. I just finished the 11th colossus, and I have to say, this is one of the best games I've ever played. It's beautiful, the horse is so realistic (like when he starts drinking if you leave him next to a puddle), the colossi are breathtaking and the ways of defeating them are so creative.

10/10 for now. But unfortunately, I think I've basically ruined the game for myself: I used an FAQ for colossi 5, 7, 8, 10, 11 as of now, and I regret missing out on some amazing puzzles. Are the puzzles required to kill the last 5 colossi as creative and imaginative as, say, colossus 11? If so, I might just redeem myself :P. Also, I know you unlock hard mode after beating the game: but are the colossi any different then or is it just that they take more hits to fall?

I completely agree. Even although it's been about a year since I last played the game I still have very fond memories. What do you think of the soundtrack? I thought it was spectacular, like every part of the game, everything was just so well thought out. The way that the colossi die... the realisation that, for most of them, you were the attacker and that you just killed a docile creature. It's kinda makes you question the way you play games... why do we always rush to kill the big things?

Anyway, the colossi just get better. The game really opens up as you play through... have you tried reaching the hidden temple yet? I'll not say any more cos I don't want to spoil anything for you, but you'll need to have played the game a few times at least before you can reach it.

The Colossi in hard mode are the same colossi but they have more hit points, so you need to be much more careful with your grip and health meters, as you need to climb all over over them. It makes them even more of a puzzle. :D Time attack should also unlock and that's a real challenge, especially on hard. Time attack also unlocks some neat items to use in the game.

Do you know about the in-game health/grip boosters? Do you want to know...?

I've just looked at the colossi you've got left. DAAAAAAMMMMMNNNNN I wish I was you!!! Colossi 11 is small fry compared to others but he might give you a hard time... I'll say no more. But there's so many good moments still to come. Yeah, you're not gonna be disappointed.

Post again to let me know how you're getting on. :D

To elaborate on this: in hard mode the colossi have more weak points that you must destroy before they are defeated.

Also to elaborate: SotC is, like, better than sex (not that I would know recently!)

The soundtrack is spectacular, I agree. And what you said there about the colossi dying, it's some of the most emotional moments in any game to date for me (although I mostly play Nintendo games, and those don't have many of those).

Nope, I haven't.

I do. I played the first 3 colossi with a friend sitting next to me who had beaten the game already... and he couldn't keep quiet about that. He actually gave me a lot of hints on those 3 colossi too.

I completed number 11 already when I posted that first post, and that was one of the colossi I used a guide for. I figured out what I needed to do, but not how (I won't say any more not to spoil it for someone who hasn't played the game). That was one of the most ingenious ways to beat a boss I've ever seen, and I really regret not figuring it out by myself. You say numbers 12, 13, 14, 15 and 16 are just as good? I can't wait :).

I will. I don't have school on Monday and Tuesday so I'll probably play it then :).

Also, as for the topic itself, I just got TimeSplitters 2 (GCN) for €3,50 on eBay. Good deal? I think so ;)

EDIT: I just found a sealed We Love Katamari (Katamari Damacy never came out in Europe and this one is really rare here in Belgium) for €16,90 Buy It Now. I bought it immediately :)

I just killed the 12th colossus (without a FAQ this time! :)), only 4 to go :(. Amazing experience though, as I said already
Your next colossi is one of my favorites. :D

I thought I'd split out the SotC discussion, as this deserves it's own topic. :)

OK, now this game finally has its own topic ;).

I've heard many people tell me the 13th is their favorite colossus. I'll leave him for tomorrow (I don't have much time today and I don't want to have to resort to a guide to finish the fight quickly and save). :)

I'm surprised this game hasn't had it's own topic already, there's been plenty of dicussion about it... must be in other topics though. I know Dagoss, StYoung and Red Shadow also played this... who else did?

Floorcat, did you ever get around to playing this game?

I'm actually in the minority that liked Ico more than SotC. Either way, the minimalist narrative in both games is really the right way to make a game. SotC and Ico both tell their stories better than almost every other game that has been made.

I'll be sure to try Ico sometime, it is pretty hard to find though so I'll keep looking. Is this a good deal: very long eBay link? I know it's very expensive for a used game but this one is so hard to find...

About SotC itself, I decided to beat the 13th colossus now (I couldn't wait :)) and I just defeated him. That was a truly amazing fight, the best boss fight I've ever played, bar none. Epic in scope, not too easy, not too hard, the boss was beautiful, and great fun to beat too. Amazing. This colossus was certainly my favourite up to now.

Hell no! That's far too expensive! Get one from the UK, prices felll over here when the game was rereleased. Here's one that's half the price of that other auction:

Link 1

or a new copy from the same seller for a little more:

Link 2

Here's one that's even cheaper:

Link 3

I preferred SotC to Ico, but both are excellent games... Both are so different as well, I guess it boils down to what kind of gameplay you prefer.

I would have done that long ago... however, how would I pay? I'm not 18 yet, so I don't have a credit card - and a PayPal account (you need a credit card to load your PayPal account in Belgium, you can't do it by bank transfer like in eg. The Netherlands). I would have done that long ago if I had a CC (that's also the reason why I never import games - I don't have a CC and my parents don't trust any online stores besides basically Amazon and the Apple Store). The only time I ever bought a game outside of Belgium was when I went on holiday to Canada, when I got a few DS games.

I'm reading through this topic, and I'm trying to discern what type of game this is. So let me see if I have this straight: You play as this random warrior dude, and you go around fighting giant statues which have come to life. Basically the game is one long series of boss battles, as each stage has you running around the statue somehow and searching for its weakpoints, which makes them sort of like a giant moving puzzle that wants to crush you.

Is that even close to what this game is?

Also, I cried at the end of both Mega Man 2 and 3, YOU WANNA FIGHT ABOUT IT?

That's basically true ;). But you're not just searching for their weak points like in a classical, Zelda-style boss battle: those are real moving puzzles. You have to find out a way to get on them - which can be difficult by itself - and then search for a weak point ("vital") and stab it. Also, the presentation of the game is amazing: it's a beautiful, huge world with only lizards, birds, you and your horse.

There's more to say but I can't think of it right now :)

Well, I finally beat the game. I did the last three colossi today and I'll try not to spoil anything for those who haven't played the game, but it was awesome. Truly the most beautiful, emotional gaming experience I've ever had. And the scene just before the last colossus... touching. I almost cried then.

As for the colossi themselves, no. 13, 15 and 16 were absolutely amazing, the best boss battles I've ever played (in order from best to worst: 15, 13, 16). They were epic in scale, not too easy (but not devilishly hard either, like the colossi that knock you out and take half of your health away (especially no. 11 and 14), ingeniously designed, truly amazing. Best. Game. Ever. (except Okami and Super Mario Galaxy ;))

The ending was great too, one of the better endings I've seen - at least it told a story, not like the Zeldas "and the land was saved and all the inhabitants had a big party and they lived happily ever after".

You're getting close... sort of. The games intro shows your character finishing a very long walk to the distant lands, the place where you become trapped. This is of your characters own doing, the reason you're here is to bring life to a girl or to end her sleep (it's never specified whether she has died or if she's in some kind of coma or deep sleep). The distant lands are huge and not one living soul is within them (as Migulic said, it's just you, her, your horse and some wildlife). There are some living creatures though; massive beasts which wander/fly/swim across the lands.

When the game starts you are in a temple, bargaining with the temple god to awaken the girl. He states the price you pay will be high but you still accept his terms. Then he leaves it pretty much to you to find these beasts and to slay them. Most of them are docile, they completely ignore you until you attack them. And each time you kill one of them, you awaken in the temple with the souls of the beasts looking over you... it's very strange.

In gameplay terms, tracking and killing the colossi is what you do. The route to the colossi is usually a lot of riding and some platforming sections. The colossi themselves have specific weak points which you need to stab repeatedly (you have a bow and arrow but the arrows barely hurt the colossi) but half the battle is actually finding or getting to the weak spot.

This vid shows the lead up to and the battle with first colossi:

"Japanese retailers list PS2 reprint of Shadow of the Colossus

It seems Sony is attempting to drum up interest in Team Ico's upcoming, Griffin-infused adventure, The Last Guardian, by showcasing its earlier opus to poor, unenlightened folks who missed it the first time around. The opus in question is Shadow of the Colossus, which, according to a Team ICO fan site, has been listed by a number of Japanese retailers to be reprinted and sold on February 4. Sadly, it didn't get the God of War Collection treatment -- the game's still on its original platform, the PlayStation 2.

If you were the speculatin' type, you might think that The Last Guardian would be released not too much later than this reprint, ensuring that the warm, Team ICO-esque feeling would still be fresh in everyone's minds. We're more the wait-and-see types, so we plan on waiting and, shortly after that, seeing".

The developer IS Sony (Sony Computer Entertainment Incorporated to be precise). And, being honest, it's not a game that I think would benefit from Wii controls.
