Nintendo Power Controllers

During the Nintendo 64's lifetime, Nintendo Power Magazine in the US gave away three limited edition official controllers. These are the most difficult to find controllers for the N64 due to their limited numbers. Until recently there has been very little evidence on the internet of either the Nintendo Power 100 or Millennium 2000 controllers.

These three controllers were available for short periods of time to subscribers of Nintendo Power Magazine. The first of the limited editions was the Nintendo Power 100 controller, made available to subscribers in the catalogue which came with the 100th issue of Nintendo Power. There were a number of other items only available from this catalogue, including a gold Nintendo Power 100 Game Boy Pocket, which you can see clicking here and here.

This was the first official gold Nintendo 64 controller, made available in September 1997. Gold controllers would later be available to buy as part of N64 bundles and seperately, although neither of these would bear the "Nintendo Power 100" logo.

The second Nintendo Power edition wasn't available for two years. Then, in November 1999, Nintendo Power run a special offer for people wishing to subscribe to the magazine, which included the Donkey Kong 64 Banana Bunch Controller as an incentive.

This is easily the most well known of the three Nintendo Power limited editions, with various sources on the internet providing information and photographs of the controller. The Banana Bunch controller differs from other yellow controllers with it's "banana" tips to each prong of the controller and the Donkey Kong 64 logo which is printed just above the start button.

In January 2000 Nintendo Power ran yet another subscription offer, this time for the Millennium 2000 controller. Below is an abbreviated version of the reply from Nintendo that Mop_it_up got when he emailed them about the Millennium 2000 controller, in early 2007:

"Hello and thank you for contacting Nintendo. Please note that the Nintendo Power sweepstakes for the Millennium N64 Controller was featured in the subscriber-exclusive January 2000 Bonus issue (Volume 128). As far as I know, the controller was never offered at retail, and I don't know how many of the controllers were produced.

Nintendo of America Inc".

A letter from Nintendo of America also seems to indicate that a contest was held in Nintendo Power issue 128, in which Millennium 2000 controllers were offered as a prize. Special thanks go to Mop_it_up for contacting Nintendo and providing a copy of the Millennium 2000 contest letter, and also to Rapueda for scanning the Donkey Kong and Millennium 2000 offers. Scans of the Millennium 2000 contest letter, Millennium 2000 subscription offer and the Donkey Kong Banana Bunch subscription offer are all available to view on this page.

As you can see from the offer, this controller was limited edition of which there were only 1,000 made. It's probably the most unique of the three editions because of it's color scheme; it's the only official silver N64 controller, the only one with black buttons and the only one which has the darker d-pad and control stick housing. The black underside is a much darker shade than the standard N64 console and the "black" (or charcoal grey) controllers. It also has "Millennium 2000" in black text just above the start button.
