I remember back when DK64 was coming out, Nintendo expected it to be the best-selling game of all time and break Zelda: OoT's initial sales record. But since nothing much was said about it after the release, I'm guessing that it didn't break the record.

It sold well enough, but it was hardly an all time record-breaker. According to vgchartz, DK 64 sold more than 5 million copies worldwide, more than 3 million copies sold in the US alone:

I wonder why Nintendo expected sales to be that strong? I also wonder if the game requiring the Expansion Pak affected the sales. 5 million worldwide is still pretty darn good. How many games from the last generation sold more than 5 million? The only ones I'd guess are the GTA's and the Halo's, but I don't know for sure.

5m is good sales, although the figure on Wikipedia is only 3.77 million. As always, trying to find accurate sales info for games is difficult, and some of the figures on Wikipedia seem to be wrong; for example Super Mario Sunshine apparently sold more then Mario Kart Double Dash although this was previously the other way around!

Anyway, here are the N64's strongest sellers according to Wikipedia:

Super Mario 64 - 11 million
Mario Kart 64 - 8.47 million
GoldenEye 007 - 8 million
The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 7.6 million
Super Smash Bros. - 4.89 million
Diddy Kong Racing - 3.78 million
Donkey Kong 64 - 3.77 million

And here's some recent games that have sold more than 5m. As we can see, it's only very high profile games that make the list:

Xbox

# Halo 2 (8 million)[41]
# Halo: Combat Evolved (5 million)[42]

Gamecube

# Super Smash Bros. Melee (6 million)[67]
# Super Mario Sunshine (5.5 million)[68]

Playstation 2

# Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas (14 million)[116]
# Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (13 million)[117][43]
# Gran Turismo 3: A-Spec (11 million)[108]
# Grand Theft Auto III (11 million)[117]
# Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty (7 million)[118]
# Kingdom Hearts (5.6 million shipped)[86]
# Final Fantasy X (5 million)[11]

DS

# Nintendogs (13.6 million)[74]
# New Super Mario Bros. (9.5 million)[74]
# Brain Age: Train Your Brain in Minutes a Day! (8.51 million)[87]
# Pokémon Diamond and Pearl (6.21 million approximately, 5.21 million in Japan,[74] 1.0 million in US)[88]

* Pokémon Diamond (2.50 million in Japan only)[89]
* Pokémon Pearl (2.05 million in Japan only)[90]

# Animal Crossing: Wild World (5.75 million approximately, 4.01 million in Japan,[91] 1 million in Europe[92] 800,000 in US)[93]

Once again, I'd treat these stats with suspicion, as the difference between games being shipped and sold doesn't appear to have been addressed (VG Chartz also seems to count shipments rather than sales) and some of the references are dubious (would you believe a game sold so many units simply because a games journalist had said so?).

5m is good sales, although the figure on Wikipedia is only 3.77 million.

I'm pretty sure that figure was just for the US release. But you're right, finding accurate sales data isn't easy, especially for older systems. I have this suspicion that companies try to keep that data hidden from the public. Either that, or sales are difficult to keep track of. Maybe both.

I'm also wondering if the PS2 GTA sales are really just for PS2, or if they were mixed up with the numbers for all platforms (probably not, but I'm still wondering).

The DK sales figure is for the US and Japan (Europe seems to have been missed out and it sold reasonably well over here, although perhaps not well enough to account for the missing 1m+):

# Donkey Kong 64 (3.77 million approximately, 2.67 million in US,[60] 1.10 million in Japan)[58]

Forget to provide the link in my last post so here it is:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best_...and_video_games

It's possible that the GTA sales are for all platforms (the reference is Take 2's fiscal report) but even then the actual PS2 figure is still likely to be very close, as the PC and Xbox sales of GTA only made up a small percentage of overall sales.

I'd be highly suspicious of those stats Alxbly. 13.6 million copies of Nintendogs whereas Halo only sold 5 million? 13.6 is more than Mario 64!

Actually, the Nintendogs sales numbers have as source a PDF - Consolidated Financial Statements - Nintendo, so they should be pretty accurate. Probably if you combine the sales of all version, the outcome will be around 13-14 million.

I am, as the last paragraph of that post indicates:

Wikipedia is a great site for finding information, but you should always treat anything you learn there as possibly suspect. It's true of every WWW site, of course (well, and every source ever, in fact), but especially with Wikipedia being open to creation and editing by anyone.

And yes, accurate sales figures are notoriously hard to come by. Production figures are easier to ascertain, but this doesn't take account of the pirate copies that are sold to people who believe that they are buying real products.

Doesn't the 13.6 million figure for Nintendogs count every version of the game? If so, then it makes for an unfair comparison.

^ That's kind of a myth that's built up since it's release. At the time it was released most gaming magazines and webistes gave it a good review, as you can see from sites like Game Rankings:

http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages4/191702.asp

An average of 87% from 29 reviews is pretty good for any game. Since then, though, it's been held up as an example of how collecting can be heavily relied upon as a feature to extend a game. And it's true, there is a lot of collecting in DK64. There's a lot of other good stuff too but that often gets forgotten.

I think perhaps one of the reasons DK64 gets a hard time these days is that people with no liking for Nintendo can slag it off, and many of the Nintendo "hardcore" (I hate that term so much...) will agree; there's no love lost for Rare since they "jumped ship" to Microsoft.

I've recently bought some promo stuff for Donkey Kong 64, so I thought I'd show you guys. Guess the first thing I should show is the mega rare DK64 controller!!!

Posted Image

Okay, okay, so it's not actually the DK64 controller. This is some weird cover for the N64 controller... I've no idea why anyone thought this was a good idea! Maybe it's for long playing sessions when your hands get sweaty??? That's kinda gross. I mean, surely it would start to smell after a while? Anyway, this one is fresh and will stay that way because it's not gonna get used. It just makes the controller look silly, anyway. If anyone knows the history of this thing then please post. Perhaps it was given away with a magazine (Nintendo Power, perhaps?), I have no idea!

Next up, some real promo stuff:

Posted Image

This is a hologram badge sent out to videogame stores for the release of Donkey Kong 64. The badge reads "Ask me about!" and when tilted, shows an image of Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong 64 text and bananas as a background. I had a bit of trouble getting a photo of the Donkey Kong view, but you can just make out DK and the banana background in the photo on the right.

Posted Image

I also got this Donkey Kong banana notepad. This was also a promo item given out to stores. And it came with...

Posted Image

You might have guessed, it's a Donkey Kong 64 banana pen! Last of the promo items is this:

Posted Image

This DK64 barrel was originally shrinkwrapped but my curiosity got the better of me. It opens up to reveal....

Posted Image

A Donkey 64 shirt! Nice. And, of course, no Donkey Kong collection would be complete without:

Posted Image

That's right, it's the Nintendo Power Donkey Kong 64 Banana Bunch controller. So I've finally managed to track down the last of the limited edition Nintendo Power controllers. I'll take a few more photos and put them up on www.N64answers.com. :)

That controller cover is... yeah... ummm... it seems like it would make playing games more difficult.

How big is that barrel? It's awesome. You could use it to put your loose change in or something.

And in high school I worked in the video game area of a Toys R Us, and I remember we had those buttons, the pads of paper, and the banana pens when the game came out. Ahhh, so many memories! I wish I had hung on to the pen. It's pretty sweet.

Great finds, alxbly!

Thanks Rapueda. The barrel is just the right size for keeping change in (it's just a little smaller than a pint glass). I wonder if I should test out the controller cover? Nah...

Spikie: The only gameplay button affected is c-up, which the cover slips over if you press the button down. Not exactly helpful. That said, I think the elastic holding the cover on would stretch after a while, so that this wouldn't be a problem. Since this thing is likely to be about eight years old (assuming it was released at the time of DK64's release) and it's never been used, it's probably safe to say that the elastic has lost some of it's stretch.

Maybe...

Applepieman: Including shipping from the US to the UK, this lot came to over $100 (US).

Well, the top photo - that cover thing is definitely some kind of banana design.

Hmm, I don't know why but it seems to appeal as being comfortable to me. ^_^
What is the material?

Got some other weird crap a while ago... not really Donkey Kong-related or promotional...

These were given away with Taco Bell meals. There was a whole range of N64-themed toys:

I've also got the Mario Maze, but it's not very exciting. The Starfox Shootout looks cool... although it's probably rubbish!
