Nintendo 64 Console Editions Guide![]() There have been many different versions of the Nintendo 64 console released in various colors and in various countries worldwide. The shape of the console and controller stayed the same throughout the N64’s life, with the only revision being that of the Pokemon Pikachu editions. These have an extended right hand side of the console with the character ‘Pikachu’ sculpted onto it, the power switch was redesigned to resemble a Poke-ball and the reset button is part of Pikachu's foot. Although the console is slightly wider to accommodate the sculpted Pikachu, the controller that comes with these editions is the same shape as the standard controller. Below is a list of the known Nintendo 64 editions and bundles that have been released. Bracketed region abbreviations are used to signify where that edition was released as there are many editions that were only released in specific parts of the world. This list has been researched for over a year and I believe it is the most complete list of Nintendo 64 editions released worldwide that is currently available. However, there may be still be some editions missing from this list, and if you know of any please contact me. Please note that any generic images used will be replaced as soon as alternatives are found. Thanks. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Click the name to see a photo of that console. Notes on the console editions. These are some brief conclusions on the editions listed above. When differences are mentioned it is assumed that the reader will already be aware of regional variations that affect all editions; namely the way the console displays (PAL/NTSC) and the placement of the regional lockout tabs within the N64 console. These will not be highlighted as differences in these notes. For more information on regional display and lockout tabs, see the Import and Regional Compatability Guide. The standard editon N64's are the same bundle worldwide; charcoal grey console and a light grey controller. The only variation appears to be in the packaging. The packaging of the US, EUR and AUS/NZ standard editions are all very similar. Similarly, the JPN and KOR packaging is also similar. The "odd one out" is the (presumed) Hong Hong edition, which has a unique packaging design. The Funtastic and Color ranges from the US and Europe are the same, and only differ in their packaging. All six colors were available in both regions. In the US there was also the Donkey Kong Set, which included a Jungle Green console. The European equivalent (the Donkey Kong Pak) contained a standard charcoal grey console. I'm 90% certain that the Japanese Midnight Blue console is the same color as the Grape console from the Funtastic/Color range (please contact me if you can confirm or deny this), and 100% certain that the Clear Black console is the Japanese equivalent of the Funtastic/Color Smoke edition. The Gold editions have been released in both the US and Japan, and are highly sought after. Although a gold controller edition was released in Europe, a gold console was never released in this region. The Pikachu editions are dark blue and yellow in Europe and the US. However, in Japan the Pikachu editions were a lighter blue color and there was also an orange and yellow edition. The notable US exclusives are the Extreme Green and Atomic Purple bundles. Both came with a standard charcoal grey console but also had a uniquely colored controller (from which they get their name). The atomic purple controller is clear light purple and the extreme green controller is luminous green. Atomic purple is much lighter in color than the Funtastic/Color Grape editions. Japan's regional exclusives are the two-tone clear consoles. These consoles are the Clear range, which have a colored translucent upper body and a translucent white lower body. These were only available in Japan... with one exception; the Clear Blue edition was released in Europe as the second Super Mario 64 edition. The two rarest N64 editions are Japanese, and these are the Daiei Hawks and Justco 30th Anniversary limited editions. The Daiei Hawks edition is unique in that it's two tone color scheme used black as the color for the lower body shell of the console. There also appears to have been another edition that was planned; Clear Orange. This was, at one point, advertised by some importers but there's no evidence that this edition was ever produced.
