This shall be the ultimate nerd topic. Tell us about your computer hardware! Don't be shy. If you have a camera, why not post some money shots? I have two computers that are sorely in need of replacement/upgrading. Desktop -- built in 2004 -Pentium P4 2.3 Ghz -1 gb ram -ATI Raedon 9600 XT -A semi-decent Creative soundcard, but I don't have 5.1 speakers so it's sort of pointless. -Windows XP: Pirated Edition. -A CTR monitor that flickers, changes between green and yellow tints, and is very unattractive. It can run most games up until Oblivion, after which it starts to have problems. Half-life 2 runs medium-high. Oblivion can run on medium with distant land off. I used to dual-boot with Ubuntu, but I started to need more storage space than a single harddisk could muster. I use this one mostly for Laptop -- purchased in 2002 -Athlon XP 1.2 GHz (or something like that) -128 mb ram -Integrated video with 32 mb (cough) of vram -No working battery -It weighs like 40 pounds/[insert obscene amount of kilograms here] I have to be at an outlet since the battery no longer works and the distributor I got it from is now defunct. It's currently running Ubuntu 8.04.01, which works perfectly fine, except the university only supports wireless printing from Windows machines. On the plus side, it produces less heat in my un-airconditioned apartment and cannot run any games to distract me from doing work. Plus it lets me work in the library basement, which has no computers set up. I plan to upgrade this before the desktop. If only I had money. A gaming quality PC is becoming less and less important these days. It's been a long time since a truly exclusive game has come out for PC (unless you count Crysis). Many PC games now seem to be designed with a console port already in mind (cf. Oblivion) |

I only got a desktop computer, I got this one last december, so it's pretty new

My computer would probably make David cry. I'm planning on purchasing a laptop coming up shortly for college with some saved up money/scholarship stuff. I guess I'll post more about it whenever I get it... |

Still, it runs. All of the above screenshots were taken on the same laptop I listed above. Of course, that's not to say it runs well ;). I have every setting set on the lowest option, and I use 800x600 resolution. I would play it on something better, but the only other computers I could use are my Mac - and I don't want to give any more money to Microsoft than I have already, so buying Windows for that is out of the question - or my parents' desktop which has an integrated graphics card. Not much choice

That's impressive. Proof that valve makes technically amazing products. I support any effort to avoid Windows. I've heard that Crossover (which is based on WINE's libraries) can run HL2 natively on OS X. It might be worth looking into. I've never tried it myself (and to be honest, I've never tried WINE, but I've heard it can work pretty well. |

Both my computers are out of date, and are ready to be replaced. But sins they work mostly fine on a daily bases, I’m not in a hurry to buy a new PC. Especially sins I not so long a go bot a new car(used new), a 1997 Toyota Celica 1,8. Desktop1(midi tower) built end of 2003 - S-478 P4 2.4Ghz 533Mhz 512k - 1GB Ram PC2700 333Mhz - ASUS VGA-Card Radeon HD3650 512MB AGP(just installed) - CREATIVE Soundcard SB Audigy 2 NX USB2.0(I juse this on both PC`s) - ATA HD 160GB WD (x2) - ATA HD 320GB WD - ATA HD 500GB WD - Windows XP Home - 24” LCD Widescreen monitor max res. 2048x1536(run 1920x1200) This is my daily work horse, I juse for surfing the web, watching and downloading video. And any other non gaming activity requiring a PC. Desktop2(miditower) Built mid 2004 - S-476 P4 3Ghz 800Mhz 1MB - 3GB Ram PC3200 400Mhz - ATI Radeon 9600 256MB - Same soundcard as Desktop1 - ATA HD120GB WD - SATA HD 200GB WD - Windows XP Home - 17” LCD monitor This is my Gamer PC, but it’s not up to the task of running the newest games. The newest game I have tried on it is PRAY, and this game works partially. It jushaly works fine for 5-10minuts, and the machine crashes. But it works fine fore games like Farcry, Doom 3 and similar games, and I have recently started running DosBox on it and are playing older pre windows games on it. |

I freed up some space on my desktop, resized my NTFS partition and installed Ubuntu. This is my first time using Linux on a computer with more than 16 mb of vram. I installed beryl/compiz, and a few other things. Beryl lets you do things like rotate your desktop like it's a cube, zoom in/out like over multiple desktops, organize windows into stacks and flip them around like cards, etc. I'm not sure how productive it is, but holy crap is it pretty! The reason I reinstalled Linux on my desktop is because I want to go through Linux from scratch (again), and with my laptop it would have taken like a year. |

My computer lags sometimes just by moving the mouse pointer. Whenever I receive one of those Blue Screen of Death messages, at least one word is misspelled. Beat THAT! |

Just built this last year. And put new RAM in an hour ago! (One stick went bad
 )Vista 64-bit (Yeah...w/e. Was horrible with only 1 GB when 1 stick failed; okay otherwise..can't use my c++ compiler or use Windows help) Asus P5n-e sli E4300 usually @ 3.0 Ghz. I turn it down to 2.4 in the summer...I actually notice a difference in room temperature.  2 GB DDR2 Crucial Ballistix Tracer RAM 8500 @ 7xx Ghz (need to config) 8800GT 512 MB (Haven't even played a game in over a month )1 TB storage. (2x250 in RAID 0...probably dumb idea but oh well. 1 500 GB) Thermaltake Armor case X-Clio 500W psu |

Impressive, Fox. I finished rebuilding linux. Now I need to install X, but looking at some installation notes for Xorg7, it really doesn't look like an pleasant experience. Maybe I'll just stick with the console for now. |

My computer is dying. It used to be good but now it struggles to cope with basic things like the internet. Firefox takes about a minute to open and the PC takes about five minutes to respond after startup. The desktop appears but then it has to have a little think to itself before anything else will work. I'm sure it's contemplating something quite profound but what it is I'll never know.

I gave Kde4 a whirl today. I feels very much like it's still in beta or something. Some of its new ideas are pretty interesting -- like replacing the traditional desktop with s series of widgets -- but even in the short time I used it, I encountered plenty of bugs or features that need fine-tuning. I think that a year from now, it will be a very good DE. |

I own 2 computers, one desktop and one laptop. Both are currently running Windows Vista Home Premium 32- bit edition. My Desktop is an HP featuring an Intel Core 2 Duo processor and my Laptop is Dell XPS model with the same core 2 duo processor. Both comps have an 8000 series Nvidia GPU and they both have 2 GB system RAM. My Laptop is technically still better than my Desktop in the performance department though.  |

Home made computer..built by my brother. It's pretty old too. Not the best thing in the world but it does what I want it to do. The specs are...Athlon 1.5 GHZ processor, 512 RAM, 20 GB hard drive (..I hate it. I need more), Geforce 4 graphics card..Nothing special. o_O But all I really NEED on my computer is Photoshop and a few games ya know..like Postal 2
and old DOS games (I love the past). I'm not enough of a PC gamer to care about all the new releases, therefore I don't upgrade unless its a necessity. I'd like to eventually get a Mac. Not sure exactly what one, but my brother let me keep his in my room when he lived here and I got to where I was using the Mac more than my own computer. It was an OS10 I think. |

I play most of my games on my PC but I'd certainly not consider myself a gamer. My PC does pretty much everything and is mostly used for programming and playing EVE Online (badly addicted!). I spend a silly amount of time on it, specs are 2.4ghz/1gb/80gb/AGP NV 7600. Looking for a massive upgrade as soon as I find my next job to something like 2.6ghzX4/4gb/32mb ssd+80gb hdd. Not fussed with graphics cards, but it'll be enough to play the current crysis. |

And your computer old? Running at Windows 95, my father did old trust me. He ran his archaic computer using Windows 95 till just this past year. The man refuses to make the leap ahead still to Windows Vista. His newer desktop only does Windows XP. Now my dad's older desktop ran Windows 95 and could not be properly upgraded even to Windows 98 because of the lack of RAM and processing speed. Now THAT is old sister! In fact, i'll have you know that my old man is so old fashioned, that he even grows his whiskers like this avatar of General Ambrose Burnside of the Civil War era. No joking either! My dad is often refered to as Merlin the Magician....i'll try to get a recent pic of him.....

Running Anything older than Windows XP for a desktop now-a-days sounds just plain awful to me. I run Vista and I think it's great. So many usful features and improved things that XP lacked. My only gripe is that the interface is diabolical. |

Why would you still be running '98? It's over a decade old, is filled with bugs even with every single update, uses an unstable kernel, uses an unreliable filesystem, and -- I mean, Christ, it just flat out blows! And don't pull the "oh my hardware is too old" thing! There are much better OSs that run on terrible hardware. |

It's the computer I use for applications like Word, Excel, Powerpoint, etc. All I really need it to do is run Word, which it does amazingly well. Sometimes it'll give me one of those Blue Screen of Death messages along the lines of "Hard drive physically damaged, back up your files now to prepare for the impending crash", and it makes an impressive grinding noise when I first power it on, but other than that, it's fine. This here PC that I use for Internet is running XP, though I believe it was built in 2003, making it one of the earlier XP machines. Oddly enough, I don't really experience the problems you've mentioned (nor do I fully understand what you mean) with the '98 machine, but the XP machine has a host of issues. The '98 machine runs a lot more smoothly than the XP one, which goes to show something but I'm not sure as to what... Hell, even the Internet Channel on the Wii loads up faster! I think I have an Amiga around here somewhere but I doubt it still works... |

i just got it about 5 months ago. it was a walmart special
it is a dell inspiron 531 2.3 ghz processor 2 gigs of ram 120 gig hard drive 14 flat screen monitor and best of all, windows xp. i was happy to avoid vista before that i was using an ancient pc. it was an hp made in 2000. 466 mhz processor 512 megs of ram (updated from the original 96) and a HUGE 10 gig hard drive. and i had dial up to boot. i am a much happier pc user now |

Lol, you should see the computer I have to use at work  Windows NT (I guess), 64 MB RAM, no CD-ROM drive, but instead a 3¼ inch floppy drive (which NO ONE uses), the computer has a sticker with handwritten text "milennium proof" a keyboard without a Windows key, a friggin BALL MOUSE WITHOUT SCROLLER  and there are no USB ports to replace the current mouse with an optical mouse I do have a flatscreen however... |
