What do you get if you combine Doom 3's atmosphere and dark corridors with Resident Evil 4's over the shoulder perspective, item management and action based gameplay, Metroid Prime's map and suit upgrades and add in mutant monsters that can only be killed by blowing their limbs off? (See topic title for the answer). Dead Space takes bits from lots of games and adds it's own unique spin on things. I'm only on level two so far but I'm already enjoying foot stomping downed enemies until their limbs seperate (complete with gory blood spurts), hording ammo and exploring every dark corner. My only criticism of Dead Space so far it that perhaps it a little too easy... but, since I'm only on the second level, maybe I'll regret saying that... In keeping with all recent topics, here some video footage of Dead Space in action for you to ignore or salivate over. How far in are you, floorcat? Does the game get more difficult? |

I've played up to chapter 9 so far (medium/normal difficulty)... I'd say that it definitely does get pretty intense at times... not sure what I'd say exactly about the difficulty. It's hard to say, because on the one hand, I downloaded the *free* Obsidian Suit (awe-sommmmes) so I've been playing with the added armor and extra inventory slots from day one, but... Spoiler: click to toggle Okay, so short answer to your question... Probably.

Okay... I've not done anything with R3 yet... that must be to come. I'm curious... this game reminds me of Resident Evil 4 quite a lot! Did you play RE4? I'm on chapter 2 (of Dead Space) just now and have just faced off the first waves of monsters. It gets pretty hectic but I don't feel too pushed as of yet. I think more monsters in closed corridors will cure that though... I read somewhere that the best thing to do with upgrades is to updgrade your Plasma Cutter then the Line Gun (is that right? The wide shot thingy), after that it doesn't matter. So that's what I'm doing. |

I did actually play the first few levels of RE4... but the reason I stopped (which is probably a very stupid reason) was because I thought I would savor the series by playing the main RE games in somewhat chronological order (by general release date). This way, I thought I could work my way up to RE4 and not feel let-down by the dated earlier games. Then the thought of REmake threw a wrench into the whole plan, and I never followed through with anything. But yes... I could totally see the parallel. Minus the setting, RE4 has headshots, while Dead Space has... errr... limb shots. I guess you could also say that I'm a little biased towards sci-fi space horror over regular zombie horror... probably something to do with being exposed to/terrified by the first Alien movie when I was a wee babe. As for R3... I'm pretty sure you can use it from very early on in chapter 1...

I'm guessing you probably haven't gotten much farther in the game (if you've even played at all)... but I must say that it DEFINITELY gets quite a bit more challenging as you get further along on "Hard" difficulty. For this play-through, I've strictly cut myself off from ALL the nifty downloadable shenanigans, flim-flams, and ballywhoos available, in order to experience the game as the developers intended... as in, NO advantage from DLC whatsoever. (This is made all the more difficult since I had already paid for and downloaded all available content - in "real" money, from the PSN Store - so I see it all every time I reach an in-game "store" where it all costs 0 credits) Truly a fun challenge!! Pretty sure I'll "splurge" and test all the DLC when I start playing "Impossible Mode".

Not much further, I'm afraid. I'm on chapter 3 but I'm tempted to restart just so I can get the "one gun" trophy. I've hardly used any of the guns except for the plasma cutter, so it's not gonna be hard to replay the levels again. Gotta decide before I get any further, otherwise it will involve too much replaying.

I'd actually recommend going for the One Gun trophy, as the Plasma Cutter - as basic as it is - is seriously an AWESOME weapon. In fact, using only the Plasma Cutter might in a sense actually make the game easier, since keeping it down to one gun in your inventory means that you'll have more credits to spend elsewhere, only one weapon to horde all your power node upgrades, and an easier time managing your inventory since you wouldn't need to worry about carrying ammo for other weapons (esp. if you're not using any of the downloadable level-5 upgrade suits). Plus, holding off on using the other weapons only gives you more of a reason to play through the game again (those cheeky dev monkeys!), so you can have a blast (HA! pun) with the other weapons and not have to worry so much about the ammo (at least if you're playing on a round 2 "CLEARED GAME" save). I finished the game on Hard the other day without any help of downloadable content (apparently the Tier 3 Engineer trophy is given on Impossible??)... and I've started two new games... one on round 2 Hard (CLEARED GAME), and another on Impossible, and both using the fancy-schmancy downloadable poop (FUN FUN! ). So far, Impossible doesn't seem... "impossible"... perhaps the difference lies only in how much ammo you get or the health taken from enemy hits?

Gotta get back into this game, I was really enjoying it. Now you've completed it twice and I'm not even past chapter 3. ![]() It's Fallout 3's fault. If it wasn't for Fallout 3 I'd have time to play Dead Space. Time to eat. Time to breath. Oh, the things I could do...

Returned it today. I'm indifferent, I could see there was a good game there but for some reason this game was very hard to play in anything but long sustained periods. I couldn't just play for half an hour and come back an hour later like I would have wanted to because I forget where I am and everything. I don't have enough time to play for that long at one time right now so I only got to about chapter 3. Maybe I'll do it when I'm a little less busy, but that'll probably be never soooo yeah. I'll try my luck with Saints Row 2 which should suit me better. By the way 360 owners are any of us playing any live games currently? Edited by Ragedy, Dec 12 2008, 04:30 AM.

I'll totally admit that it takes a decent amount of commitment to play through a chapter... or not even that, but just to play through to the next save point! To get through an entire chapter, it could easily require a full hour of your time (if not more!), the game really exceeds at making 30 in-game meters feel more like 30 in-game miles. Fast progress becomes impossible when you're verrrrrrrrrry slowwwwwwwly creeping along, and I see this as a total success for the game... but it could just as easily work against it, depending on the person.

It's not the space between save points that bothers me... actually, i have no problems with game what so ever! It's just that I restarted when I got the downloadable content, so I've already replayed missions 1 and 2 twice. Replaying them again so soon wouldn't be boring but I just fancy something else just now. I may end up just play where I left off, it's probably easier. |

Yes... keeping it to the Plasma Cutter keeps things simple... leave the inventory management to the later playthroughs (which I hope you'll have... since pretty much ALL the other weapons are SWEEEEEET). This frees up all the inventory slots that would be taken with ammo for the other weapons, too! When you beat the game, you not only keep ALL the inventory you've gained, but you're also given something like 10 power nodes and a bunch of credits... and the option to buy the military suit (which is good, but isn't THE BEST, IMO). The only thing is that you're restricted to playing the same difficulty with all your collected goodies... so no jumping up a difficulty pre-powered-up, which I think is totally fair. If you wanted to do the next play-through on Hard or Impossible, you'll have to start from scratch. Just remember to start a NEW game (and save it the first chance you get) on "Impossible" difficulty before quitting the game after beating it the first time through... because as far as I can tell, "Impossible" only shows up once each time you complete the last level, when you're spit back into the title screen after the credits. ... And if you're playing on Medium, I'd recommend jumping straight into Impossible instead of Hard... the difficulty doesn't seem all that drastically different between the two (still pretty hard, but not impossible, esp. if I was able to do it). Thanks floorcat. I'm glad you get to keep the powered up suit and weapons, I think that'll make the second playthough even more fun since I'll be fully powered up and have a selection of nasty weapons at my disposal. RE4 was similar, after the first playthrough you get a gun which turns the game totally in your favour. Infinite ammo, yes please!

I'll have to add another disclaimer that may or may not disappoint you... It'll actually be reaaaaaally hard (if not impossible) to be fully powered-up (as in full power for ALL weapons/rig/stasis/kinesis) when you start your 2nd play-through... you can tell that EA really designed the game to make it so! You should be able to fully-upgrade a few things (like your Rig and Plasma Cutter... and MAYBE stasis) with a few other things partially upgraded, and that'll definitely help for round 2. If I recall correctly, I was extremely careful about managing everything during a round 1 (on Impossible), and just barely managed to get everything fully-powered half-way through round 2... which meant I was left totally broke and ammo-less!!

So with that, I bid you all farewell... like Rapueda, I've found a new home, never to return... a new forum to post my Dead Space-related and non-Dead Space-related I-can't-stop-thinking-about-Dead-Space ramblings. It was fun, SEE YA!!!! Or not. From: http://www.joystiq.com/2009/03/02/motionminus-dead-space-extraction-wont-use-motionplus-after-al/ "MotionMinus: Dead Space Extraction won't use MotionPlus after all A few days back, we posted a story based on a quote from EA's John Pleasants that seemed to confirm the use of the MotionPlus peripheral for the upcoming Dead Space: Extraction on the Wii. We mentioned how weird we thought it was to use advanced motion-sensing in a title that will presumably be controlled mostly with the Wiimote's pointer. EA seems to agree that it would be a weird choice, which is why it isn't actually doing that. It turns out that the quote was mistakenly taken out of context: at the Goldman Sachs conference, Pleasants talked about EA's planned MotionPlus sports games and Dead Space at around the same time, and somehow in the trip onto the Internet, the two subjects became conflated". |

Don't mind at all! I paid the $149 (each) plus shipping from the EA store... yes, something had actually told me inside that I MUST HAVE ULTRA LIMITED EDITION DEAD SPACE... even before any reviews had popped up prior to its release date. A rare case where a "limited release" really meant a "limited release"... and where I pre-ordered something that most would consider god-awfully overpriced... and it effectually (as far as I know) became the cheapest price you could ever pay for said something! Yes... the Ultra limited edition is the reason I wake up in the morning. It is my all... my everything!
The Dead Space DVD is decent... nothing spectacular, but it gives a nice little bit of prequel-ish storyline to the whole Dead Space world. Definitely at least worth a rent if you're at all interested in the story! In terms of plot/presentation, I'd actually rate the comic series a bit higher than the animated movie, but not as high as the actual game. (The plotline of the comic series takes place just before Dead Space Downfall, which takes place just before the game.) |

... might even score me a gold trophy), so I've yet to unleash/witness the power of all the other "weapons" in the game. Actually, come to think of it, I don't think I even came close to dying until deep into chapter 2 (where I died a number of times)... at which point I definitely started to feel a bit more "mortal". There were points in the game where my being scared ****less led to really poor usage of my ammo (and subsequent/immediate death), and other points where I was totally overpowered... and yet other points where I repeatedly died because I was just totally clueless as to what I was supposed to do (in a good, puzzle-solving kind of way, mind you)... but I think the game design is really quite keen on trying to make sure you don't ever hit a "quit-playing-the-game-forever" caliber brick wall because of the difficulty... like it really kind of pushes you to think, "okay, there's got to be either something I'm missing, or a better way to approach this problem." Well... perhaps most of the time, at least.
I guess you could also say that I'm a little biased towards sci-fi space horror over regular zombie horror... probably something to do with being exposed to/terrified by the first Alien movie when I was a wee babe.
