Not one who’s much on technology, the newest piece of tech in my household is a DVD player, oldest being a reel-to-reel recorder. Plasma, LCD, HDMI, iPod, VHF, UMD, PCP; it’s all nonsense to me. Always one to believe in simplicity, I have no desire to delve into the Xbox 360’s HD-capable games or Sony’s Blu-Ray, dual-core tomfoolery. A system would need to have an intuitive and easy-to-use interface, without all the inane features or cutting-edge techno-geekery, to spark my interest. Fortunately for me, there’s the Nintendo Wii. But how could I be sure it’s the system for me? During a recent family reunion, I was staying over at my grandmother’s apartment. Surprisingly enough, one of the first things she said to me when I arrived was “Will you help me hook up my Wii?” Now, my grandma certainly isn’t a technophobe; she has a PC and plays internet card games every day. Even still, I never thought she would own any game system, but it makes me wonder if Nintendo really do know what they are doing. As I was unpacking the glorious white brick from the blindingly white box, I was first struck by how compact and clean everything was. I’ve heard that the system was the size of three stacked DVD cases, but it never occurred to me as to how small that really is. Even more minuscule than I thought was the Wiimote. It fit quite snugly in my hand, and every function was easily accessible without the use of my other hand (except the 1 and 2 buttons, which should go without saying, but I said it anyway because I like to hear myself talk). After the series of boring setup questions, I finally got to the Wii Channel menu. Though not as accurate as a computer mouse, I found the Wiimote, as a pointer, to be easier to use and a lot more fun. With my grandma watching, I played around in the Wii menus and showed her how to use the system. We ended up in the Mii Channel, and decided to create some Miis while we were there. Not surprisingly, my grandma couldn’t make a Mii that resembled her, but the Mii I created bared a striking similitude to myself. The current options are a good start, but the Mii Channel could use an update, one that would at least allow the pants to be coloured. My grandmother bought the Wii solely for the bowling game included in the Wii Sports pack-in, so that is the main game we played. I did play tennis and baseball briefly, but I didn’t fare well at either game. Reflecting back, I don’t think I was holding the Wiimote properly, and would need to experiment with it to find a good stance. Anyways, the bowling game is very simple and accessible: hold down B, make your bowling ball throwing motion, then let go of B. Despite the simplicity, the physics seemed quite realistic and the Wiimote was very sensitive to the subtle nuances of each person’s form. Although you’ll likely roll more strikes than you would in real bowling (my highest score in real bowling is 47), it’s still quite difficult to score above 200. Then again, it’s the drive of beating your personal best that will keep you coming back. It’s a game system the whole family can enjoy! I played with my grandma, my mum, and my mum’s twin sister. My grandmother loved it and couldn’t stop mentioning how much like real bowling it was. My mum didn’t do so well, but she’s never been good at any games. My mum’s sister… I don’t recall her ever playing a video game before that night, but she played well anyway. Everyone picked up on the control scheme fast and never blamed the Wiimote whenever they made an error. Best of all, though, is that nobody once questioned the name Wii as being a strange or unusual name. That’s my first exper-Wii-ence. I know the system launched forever ago in techno-time, but I still thought it’d be fresh enough on people’s minds to post my thoughts. Did I like the Wii? Undeniably so. Will I be purchasing one? The system’s simplistic focus and multi-player aspects make it more tempting with each passing game release. …Oh, and in case you’re wondering, yes, my grandmother did kick my ass at Wii Bowling. |

From Gamespot: Reggie: Wii won't meet holiday demand By Tom Magrino, GameSpot Posted Oct 1, 2007 10:14 pm GMT As yet unbeaten in the console sales charts since it debuted in the US last November, Nintendo's Wii has consistently outsold its competitors by healthy margins. However, far from reaching its saturation point, the Mario Factory has yet to meet demand for its console. According to Nintendo of America president and CEO Reggie Fils-Amie, that situation isn't going to change as the already-booming gaming industry heads into its busiest time of the year. In an interview with the San Jose Mercury News, Fils-Amie unabashedly admitted that Nintendo isn't meeting the demand for its console. "We have been sold out worldwide since we launched," he boasted. "Every time we put more into the marketplace, we sell more, which says that we are not even close to understanding where the threshold is between supply and demand...Our inventory is lasting a day." Not mincing words, the outspoken exec said that a lot of children will be left wanting this holiday season. "We're working very hard to make sure that consumers are satisfied this holiday, but I can't guarantee that we're going to meet demand," he said. "As a matter of fact, I can tell you on the record we won't." As for why, Fils-Amie noted that it is a game of economics that it is hampering supply, not the console maker's ability to produce. "The issue is we went in with a curve that was aggressive, but the demand has been substantially more than that. And the ability to ramp up production and to sustain it is not a switch that you flick on," he explained". Anyone else think this supply shortfall is intended to get buyers to part with their cash as soon as they see a Wii? One year after launch and still in short supply... Also, how come every article on Gamespot calls Nintendo the Mario Factory? Games journalism at it's best.

That's what she said!
Indeed it did. That's probably one of the things that helped it against the PSP. People saw the DS was in short supply while the PSP was well-stocked in almost every store. I've said it before and I'll say it again: the average gamer is an absolute dumbass. |

The only thing worse than this accessory is your comment. Seriously, people must be going crazy with the remote, because it really isn't that difficult to keep it in hand. |

*pretends to care* *gives up on pretending to care* I can see why Nintendo have introduced it, though. I've seen a few people playing Wii Sports very aggressively, and there's bound to be accidents when people swing with all their might. |

I reckon most accidents happen to people who haven't played it much. Once you get to know the game you realize there's no point in swinging with any force. But newbies... they give it their all! |

If Nintendo didn't spend so much time created useless accessories for the Wiimote then they could probably meet their holiday demand. Sometimes I really don't understand this company.

I doubt an item like this would cut into their system manufacturing. It doesn't even use the same material. I do think it is a pointless accessory though. |

It could be described as the ultimate Wii mod, and it certainly commanded a neat price. http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...em=130157439814 PS: it sold on the 1st October, so apologies if you've seen this before. OLD!!! etc. There's a more info at: http://gizmodo.com/gadgets/mods/samus-wii-...ness-303933.php |
