A number of games have come out for the DS (mainly Final Fantasy 3 DS, Yoshi's Island DS, Metroid Hunters, and a few others) as well as a few GBA games that have come out recently (such as new translations of FF5 and 6) now that I have sold my GBA. Plus I wouldn't mind having a portable system again. But I'm skeptical -- ! How durable is the screen? Is the screen replaceable? It seems like getting it scratched up would be inevitable -- I mean, you're poking the expensive hardware with a little stick? How is GBA emulation, now reliable is the battle, are there certain games I should be more familiar with? Tell me your experiences with the system!

I haven't played one, but I do know that there are screen protectors that you can buy for the touch screen.

Anyone have a Nintendo DS?
I do :)

How durable is the screen?
I think the touch screen is very durable. It's in better condition the the top screen!

Is the screen replaceable?
I don't really know. :-/

It seems like getting it scratched up would be inevitable -- I mean, you're poking the expensive hardware with a little stick?
There's little scratches on mine. The type you can only see when the light hits it and when you look at it at the right angle. The stylus (little stick) is really blut, so it doesn't scratch it (at least to my knowledge it doesn't). Most games (well, the one's I have) don't use the touch screen an awful lot.

How is GBA emulation?
You can pick wither you want to use the top screen or the touch screen and it also has a back light. The only draw back IMO is that you can't have multi-player games.

are there certain games I should be more familiar with?
I only really play Animal Crossing. You might want to look into getting it.

Tell me your experiences with the system!
Nothing really springs to mind.

Sorry if I've not been very helpfull.

I too want a DS and will be getting one about a month from now. My question is:

Black, white or pink?

Or black maybe.

Hmmm... I quite like white.

Pink would be the obvious choice though! :P

White's nice, but I'd think black wouldn't show dirt and scratches.

I have it, and I love it. Well, everything but its crappy sound for GBA games. Golden Sun and Golden Sun: The Lost Age sound horrid on it. Too much crackling. Sonic Battle's sounds...well, there's no perfect loudness, it's either too loud, or the sound is pretty much off. I'm too lazy to constantly change the sound every time, so Japanese language makes it faster. Too bad I didn't think of it on my last overall playthrough.

The screens are nice, and I don't find it too heavy at all, sometimes, anyway. Besides the sound, I have no real complaints about it.
Even bastards need to let off some steam.

My brother has the original. I also had the original, but traded it in for a PSP back when everyone thought the PSP was going to be the better two. What a mistake...

Anyway, Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time is good. Quirkly little RPG with some good humor (best having to be the ub3r l337 hamm3r br0z), Mario Kart is wayyyyy better than the 64 version, Super Mario 64 DS was pretty good (some unique new content and playable characters), uh... Lunar DS absolutely sucked, the Metroid demo played pretty good, and the Sonic game is pretty good.

I never noticed any negatives with the sound, but I don't really pay too much attention so who knows...take Hydronix word for it I suppose.

What, the white DS is better than the Black DS? So is it better than the Jewish DS too? :o

If I am elected president, DS's of all colors will have equal rights under my administration!

Animal Crossing looks like a good game to get too. Does it play very similar to the Gamecube game? The GC game was very much something that you could easily play for short spurts a periodic intervals, so it seems like it would work well in a portable format.

It's quite durable. Checking for dead pixels is double the effort than normal since you have to check two screens now.

dagoss

Is the screen replaceable?  It seems like getting it scratched up would be inevitable -- I mean, you're poking the expensive hardware with a little stick?

Buy a screen protector. It saves you the anxiety attacks. And for goodness sake only use a real stylus to tap. Inevitably, you'll see scratches. That's just the way it is.

dagoss

How is GBA emulation, now reliable is the battle, are there certain games I should be more familiar with?

GBA emulation is good. I'd say it's around 99% compatible. You can't play Kirby Tilt and Tumble though.

dagoss

Tell me your experiences with the system!

I bought the original DS (grey) about a year or so ago. It's quite durable although the wear and tear are now showing. The games tend to be of a wide variety, from weird software that turns your DS into a guitar, to hardcore "we've seen it before" games. I've been quite satisfied with my DS and I have quite a lot of games and have tossed some in the bin (crap games). Although the DS has a lot of great titles for it, it's also home of a lot of mediocre ones as well. I heard DS lites are more susceptible to getting cracks and other production errors but I have never had one to definitively say. The DS lite also does not have a thumb strap which I find is a good tool for some titles. If you are going to get some of the first generation titles, some of them assume you have the thumbstrap, which in the DS lites's case is a no. Just beware.

If you loved Animal Crossing on GC, there's no reason why you can't like the DS version. The DS version has the Famicom games axed but has WiFi connectivity. The presentation is slightly different as the DS version presents the map as spherical instead of a flat plane. Other than that, you still perform the same kind of tasks. Slave driver Tom is there and Nintendo packed in quite some minute details in. The game wore thin on me after a month or so. If you have WiFi buddies, it could potentially prolong the lifespan of the game for you.

Of all the games you've mentioned, I've only bothered myself with Mario Kart DS and Super Mario 64 DS. While I find SM64DS a decent port, going back to the N64 version was like a revelation again. Anyone who thinks the touchscreen walk totally rocks needs to go back and feel what the analog stick did for it. SM64DS is a game that is forcibly squeezed into the DS. There are a lot more N64 titles that may have worked as a DS port, SM64 isn't one of them. If you want a Mario game, grab New Super Mario Bros. Mario Kart DS is pretty good, I'll admit. If you like Mario Kart series, this is the one to get.

You are but full of wisdom Nintendowarrior! Unlike a certain Kerr Avon, who shall remain nameless!

What about battery life? GBA SP had pretty decent battery life -- they lasted a good deal between charges and multiple recharges didn't seem to diminish the life too much (I hear you could recharge an SP like 50 times before the batteries started to lose their life). Does the DS last as long in this department?

Is the WiFi connectivity decent? I'll be honest, I've never played an online game besides with a PC. Would just having a broad band connection be enough?

My plan is to get a DS when I get my (hopefully) acceptance letters from the grad schools I applied to. Of course, if they are rejection letters, I'll have to kill myself, so I won't have time/need of a DS.

Battery life is good. Should give you a good 8 hours or so before the red lamp kicks in. When it gets low, you can drop to GBA games to prolong your gaming experience by around half an hour since powering one screen is waay cheaper and I'd advise using the top screen instead of the touch screen.

The experience differs from user to user. I've only had like two to three Mario Kart DS runs online and while the game runs smooth, the opponents do pop in and out after a while. It also depends on how close you are from the Access Point and how compatible your WiFi router is. Broadband connection should be enough to get you around. Also ensure there are no interference. Mobile phones are notorious of frequent connection errors. Animal Crossing was much more of an exercise for me to get online than Mario Kart but sure enough it's hard to find a good spot on my end. I usually go to a hotel lobby to get an AP so the difficulty is understandable. If you are opting to buy a WiFi router, check Nintendo's website for a list of them. Also check some of the WiFi forums and ask around.

I have a white DS Lite. Its definitly worth the money. Playing Cooking Mama, Lost in Blue and Harvest Moon currently.

I'd advise against getting a black DSL, finger prints stand out and that kinda thing really annoys me.

As far as I'm concerned, Pink is the only color the DS comes in. In fact, Pink is the only REAL color that exists in our reality, period. All the other "colors" are just poser wannabe light refractions.

If I get one, I think I'd get Ice Blue. It would be nice if they had bright red so it would be harder to lose. Not that I'd use it with it constantly glued to my hands.

Wow Nintendowarrior (yes, I'm spelling your name wrong and no I don't care), that's a pretty comprehensive list! Just out of curiosity, why did you call the FF3 remake and the Castlevania games "meh"? Those are two of the biggest reasons I want a DS.

Also you mentioned Nobunaga's Ambition DS as a game to avoid. That leads me to two questions: 1.) Is that game just a remake of the NES game? It would be pretty hard to screw that up since NA on NES was excellent. And 2.) Is the DS region free? Can I import games at will?

Indeed it is... and yes you can! From what I understand, any DS can play any DS game in existence (esp. if it's a pink DS).

As a "supplement" to niniendowarrior's list, from what I've been hearing, lots of people have been loving (roughly from least to most): Contact, Lost in Blue, Resident Evil, FFIII, Diddy Kong Racing DS, Elite Beat Agents, and the two Castlevania games

And from what I've been reading... it sounds like the following games also seem to have some redeeming/commendable qualities...
Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Cooking Mama
Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime
Electroplankton
Lunar Knights
Magnetica
Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
Meteos
Nanostray
Over the Hedge
Sonic Rush
Star Fox Command
Tetris DS
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble
Wario Ware Touched!
Yoshi Touch & Go

I ran FF3 and saw that the game design was stuck in the 1980s. It's a very familiar game to Final Fantasy fans and I'm not one of them. In fact, I hate Final Fantasy. FF3 is FF3 3D-ized and added with FMVs which is, quite frankly, the only thing I think Square knows to do. I'm sorry, it's not up my alley. So, it's part of my "I don't care list". The only FF game I'm looking forward to is Crystal Chronicles, primarily because it's not the same as any other FF game save the Cube version.

As for Castlevania, I've played CotM, and HoD. I then studied carefully what Aria of Sorrow was... and then DS Castlevania titles. You've played one, you've played 'em all. And none of them match Castlevania 2 which is currently the best Castlevania game I've ever played. Sure, Portrait of Ruin has that two character thingy... but I've always been a lone wolf in games. Plus, I've never been excited for these 2D Metroid-ish Castlevania games.

I haven't played the NES Nobunaga games but I remember checking out the Genesis version. I can barely remember what this DS game is because it's been a while. I just remember it to be totally lack luster in anything and everything.

And yes, the DS is region free. As 床の猫 has already mentioned.

I already wrote quite a piece on EBA. I didn't like it. Contact was too unrewarding for me. It takes a lot to survive and I just felt the game was very unforgiving. Lost in Blue, despite what Konami did, is an actual simulation! It's a simulation of torment. The genre of this game should be Survival Torment, because you'll be scraping the bottom of the barrel just to get to the next day.

床の猫

Advance Wars: Dual Strike
Cooking Mama

Electroplankton

Nanostray
Over the Hedge
Sonic Rush
Star Fox Command
Tetris DS
Tony Hawk's Downhill Jam
Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble
Wario Ware Touched!
Yoshi Touch & Go
Yoshi's Island DS

How could I forget Cooking Mama? Yes, this is a recommended title. I still haven't tried the following: Izuna, Lunar Knights, and Lunar Arc...

Electroplankton is so-so. Partially because it's not a real musical instrument inspite of what Nintendo insists. Electroplankton is too random. I want to sit and have a solid consistent instrument to play music. something Hiite Guitar DS does.

I didn't like Rocket Slime. I tend to group them all the same with the Japan-anime turn based stuff.

Starfox Command is good, I think. It expands the Starfox gameplay and adds a new dimension. It surely didn't go over huge for me, but I applaud their work.

Addition:
Super Robot Wars W is part of my "meh list".

A remark on Splinter Cell. Contrary to what reviewers think, Chaos Theory is actually 'ok'. It just kind of wore thin on me after a while. The controls are highly complex and you have to take your time. But once you come around to the understanding that you have to use the whole range of DS buttons, from shoulder buttons to face buttons and directional pad, and its touch screen functions, you might have a good time. I for one always keep my stylus out for this game and I also have the thumb strap on my index finger inserted. I then have to switch grip when I need to aim using the touch screen. Over all, Chaos Theory requires that you take it extremely slow. Of course, the way the system is laid out means you cannot do reflex type of maneuvers and spur of the moment techniques. Chaos Theory forces you to think before you act knowing the very moment you bungle up could be your last.

床の猫

Cool... I guess it's a good game then. ^_^

Yes. It's a uniquely presented title and it has a twist in gameplay when compared to OSO. I need an FAQ because I can't figure the next part. But I find this title intriguing and quite interesting.

Obviously, this guy is very stupid. Actually, I don't agree with any remark the person makes. The night time isn't too difficult. I've played it from start to end numerous times. And the night time has a story hints on it. This reviewer is ultra retarded if he doesn't like reading and so, none of the clues ever sink in for this dude. I think it's not only an unfair review, this guy talks and he doesn't know why Dracula looks like what he is. And furthermore there's an easier trick than what he shows. Yeah, sure complain about the water death. Why don't you do that for Castlevania 1 too? You nut.

And I've played Castlevania 1, 2, 3, Bloodlines, N64 CV games, and the GBA games. I know exactly what a Castlevania game is. *humph*

He is a bit unfair, I agree, though I wasn't a fan of the game. I'm not big on Castlevania until the 4th one. Castlevania was really at its best with Dracula X, which was unfairly kept from North America.

What I'll say is that Castlevania 2 is widely divisive in its nature. I say I like it more than any of the new 2D castlevania games mainly because it presents a solid and consistent game world and adds a new dimension to the game without having to resort to the old Castlevania adage of a single castle.

The modern Castlevania games squeeze everything in a single castle, that although good for one game is terribly weak in the next. What's the special moves you learn? All the same in every iteration. Monsters you face? All the same. Why are there merchants inside Dracula's Castle? Beats me. While the game can brush off all these and provide a playable experience, I cannot play another Castlevania game that's SotN-ish without feeling cheated.

Castlevania 2 presents most of the aspects in other Castlevania games in a different manner. Cities, and towns, Dracula's mysterious castles in the region and secrets lie all about. There's an economy because frankly, there should be. Monsters exist and Dracula's curse is all over town. While CV 2 is terribly archaic by todays standards, it's a game I don't bother running through over and over. Night time gets very difficult if you try to push yourself too far from the church. Just earn your exp and get yourself better equipments. Just like any RPG, you don't push through stages that your character cannot handle. Konami also dropped in an incredible amount of secrets in the game and that's why there's all these hidden items. Back in the 80s, it was a treat and people would check every nook and cranny. In fact, the way I played it back then, my brother discusses it with his friends. I discuss it with my friends. One secret a guy knows we all find out. One secret that we do know, everyone else knows. It's the kind of tight community that comes about because there's no internet. And to me, that brings about the social aspect of such titles before. A lot of the games before on Famicom were difficult to solve on your own. Castlevania 2 is incredibly difficult to do if you skip all dialogs, go through the game as linearly as just finishing a level. Konami did throw tons of hidden stuff, but all makes the discovery more rewarding. And to me, Castlevania 2 stands as one of the incredibly easiest Castlevania games ever and to me, it gives me the most satisfaction.

Your right, Symphony of the Night is the best Castlevania game (*clearly hears whatever he wants*)

So anyway, I am now the proud owner of an Onyx Nintendo DS, along with Final Fantasy III DS. As a fan of the original, I'm quite pleased with this remake. Up on the list of games to buy:

The New Super Mario Bros
Metroid Prime Hunters
Final Fantasy V Advanced

Perhaps I will have those three by summer? (Or perhaps not).
