I ran across this forum last night. I had been looking around for a N64 place. I'm a retro gamer which means I do not have any of the present generation gaming systems except for the Nintendo DS phat. I love cart based gaming more than the CD or DVD based gaiming, even though I do own some of those things. I just love holding that big ole ugly chunky piece of plastic in my hands. My passion for gaming is in those older games. I have a lot of the older systems, and I purchased them during their "Hey Day." I keep them stored in plastic containers and rotate some of them keeping one out at all times. Right now I have my N64 out all the time. Looks like it is going to be a StarFox 64 day. My first love is portable gaming and I own a lot of different portables, like the Wonderswan, SwanCrystal, Neo Pocket Color, GP32, All of the Gameboys, Nomad, Lynx II, FC Mobile, etc.

Welcome!!! Always nice to see more retro gamers here! (Though, I guess that's a given, seeing how this is an N64 board, and the N64 is pretty much totally retro now.) Still though, seems you're more serious about retro than most!

StarFox 64, Nemesis on my Gameboy Pocket, Zooo on the GBA, or Space Invaders Extreme on the DS. I'm sort-of equally spread between those games right now. I drool over high score, survival gaming. Let those aliens attack in swarms! Bring it on! Who do they think they are? Why do they always pick our tiny speck in the Galaxy to annihilate? Umm.. sorry.Yeah, floorcat I sort-of get heavy into those old games. I get a lot of extreme fun out of the arcade-like simple gameplay. I love arcade gaming. And I miss the arcades..... |

Similarly to alxbly, I love retro gaming, but I think there are some truly fabulous new titles being created all the time. The N64 is where my heart lies, however. Welcome welcome. We are a nice little community. |

I agree sort-of, it depends on the system you are looking at. And I am speaking from my perspective in gaming. I really don't like the direction that the PS3 and Xbox 360 has taken in gaming. The only thing that would really interest me in those would be the RPGs. And it has been a while since I've looked at their library. I like an arcade type of gaming and the Wii I believe has that. If my finances were better, I'd have one of those. The DS is my system of choice for this gaming generation, for now. It has a little of everything that I enjoy. And if I can just scrape together enough jingle, I'll grab up a DSi. I'm thinking that this Christmas Nintendo will begin to release games that are DSi only. What I am hearing is that it is a more powerful system than the DS. I think those games will be white carts in white storage boxes. |

I guess the way that most people view the PS3 and 360's games library is by looking at the blockbuster games; your Halo's, GTA's and Metal Gear Solid's. That's mainly because it's those titles that have the multi-million dollar marketing budgets, so it's those titles that we hear most about. In comparison, the Wii has been marketed around themes like accessibility and simple games for all, so it's not surprising that people think it has the stronger range of arcade-style titles. What I've found out from owning all three consoles is that both the PS3 and 360 have an as comprehensive and diverse a range of arcade titles as the Wii has. A lot of these titles are downloadable from the Xbox Live Arcade and Playstation Network services, and I mixed feelings about that (I prefer physical media but can also see the attraction of instant access to new games)... but am constantly tempted by the sheer number of great games available. And, weirdly enough, when I look at my own games library (and despite me owning a Wii for six months longer than my 360 and almost a year and a half longer than my PS3), I actually have more arcade games for both the HD consoles.

Downloading would be the downfall of me owning a PS3 or Xbox 360. I have only access to dialup when it come to the internet. I'm thinking that it just wouldn't cut it when going on their network of stuff. And I too, prefer being able to hold it in my hands, the game, booklet, case. When I can't feel it and touch it, it seems like it takes away half of the fun. I enjoy those days when I can just pull out the "box" taking out the games and looking at the booklets and carts, or disc. Goiing through and playing a multitude of games for an all day marathon of N64, NES, SNES, Turbo Grafx 16, Dreamcast, PS2, Game Cube, Genesis, etc. To me, being able to hold it just complete some of the passion, the pleasure, the joy.

Even without the downloadable games the 360/PS3 aren't worth dismissing but it's your choice. I agree on tthe most important dlc issues (I also want something I can hold) but stilll feel the other consoles are very competative. Your cash=your choice.

I wouldn't be expecting a switch to happen so soon or so completely. The DS has such a large userbase that it would be foolish to limit game releases to DSi-only. I don't think there will be very many of them; just look at the Motion Plus accessory on Wii and how few games in the pipeline use it. And some will probably just have DSi enhancements when played on a DSi, like how some Game Boy games would have colour when played on a Game Boy Color. The DSi CPU is almost twice as fast as both of the DS's CPUs combined and it has four times the RAM, but I don't think this will translate into anything which couldn't be done on the DS. Just look at the GameCube-Wii comparison, or at least the games which don't use any of the Wii features. |
