Quick-time events in video games... for or against?

If you ask me, the only games I've seen thus far that did quick-time events correctly (and well) are Manhunt 2 (Wii) and inFamous. Manhunt 2 because... well, it's obvious. You're mimicking the physical motion made to execute people. But as far as thumb-only button-presses go, inFamous shines, in that it was designed such that the quick-time events don't force you to keep an eagle eye on one corner of the screen and solely test your reflexes (resulting in everything else on the screen losing focus), but actually work to increase your adrenaline while you play the boss fights (and you actually HAVE to keep focused on the whole screen). Seriously... fighting Kessler on Hard, just before I was about to give him the final blow... my heart was racing because I was putting all my (physical effort) into it, and when the blow landed... holy crap was I overcome with satisfaction.

On the other end of the spectrum for me... of course, none other than RE5. Playing this on its hardest setting (Professional) and encountering its quick-time events during the various boss battles, I guarantee that you WILL experience (repeated) frustration. The button(s), while limited in variance, will essentially be random, and you need to press them immediately or you'll die and instant death, forcing you to replay the entire battle or (if there are any) at least from the last checkpoint. Skill is not an issue. Only reflexes. And it definitely detracted quite a bit from my experience of the entire game.

I voted for "yes if they're done correctly". The instant death moments in RE5 are vaguely annoying but I still prefer some interaction in cut-scenes to none at all. I think QTE's would be better if they were things that boosted your character or gave you a better gun or something like that. Something that you'd want but not something that means you need to retry a QTE over and over.

I can't remember the QTE's in InFamous... ? :eh:

The only game I have played I can think of which had them is Tomb Raider Anniversary. They were pretty annoying for the aforementioned reason that you have to start from your last save/checkpoint if you fail.

I like alxbly's idea of having them give you bonuses rather than being a requirement to succeed. That could be interesting. Though to be honest, I'm not a fan of cutscenes in general. I want to play a game, not watch a movie. Any period where you can't control something is boring.

Truth. Cut scene =

Although... my new idea is that games should replace cut scenes with smut scenes. That would keep me interested, anyway. :yeah:
