What Do You Look for in Games?

So what is it that you look for when you play or buy games(not just n64, but games in general). I'm actually very flexible being able to fit into all kinds of categories. I play games from all walks of life, but the favorites on my list usually are judged something like this:

Storyline: I love deep, meaningful storylines. I guess this is why I love Majora's Mask so much.
Controls: Not a very big factor...I can usually deal with any control issues.
Sound: I love games with good background music, adds to the appeal.
Gameplay: I like long games. Games that have a lot of quests and many sidequests(to the point it's almost impossible to do them all).
Graphics: I like good graphics but also older graphics I actually find cool(Like in the old pokemon games for GBC).

Overall I like meaningful storyline, long games with sidequests, and good graphics and sound. (However storyline gets bent for some games, example Super Smash Bros. Series)

I'm versatile in the fact that I can play shooting, fighting, action, rpg, or any other type of game. One comment that I never liked(from a friend) was:

I've been trying to find time to prove why I think LoZMM is the best game ever. Will be a very long work on it, but I've been busy lately

There is no spoon.
I look for simple "pick up and play" arcade type gaming. And that is the main reason my main diet is retro gaming.
I want something that I can pick up and be satisfied with only 5 minutes of playing or I can sit there for an hour having fun. And the fewer the buttons needed to play the better. I become frustrated with a controller that has 20 buttons and you have to use everyone of them to play the game. (just an example)
Examples of my type of gaming is Ridge Racer 64. It stays in my N64 and has to be removed to play something else. Laying next to the N64 is Hydro Thunder and Off Road Challenge. (My favorite game on the N64 is Star Fox 64, always a must play!)

Another could be Samurai Showdown 1, 2, 3, & 4 on my Neo Geo CD. Or many of the other fighters that I have on that system.
On the Turbo Grafx 16, it can be Soldier Blade, R-Type, Raiden, Blazing Lazers, Galaga' 90, Side Arms, Ninja Spirit, etc.
NES would be Crisis Force, Gun Nac, Bubble Bobble, Gyruss, Heavy Barrel, Super Mario Bros. 3, Yoshi's Cookie, etc.
On the SNES I tend to play Gradius III forever, and Star Fox. On the Dreamcast you will find me having fun with the arcade flavored games.

Really that just gives you an idea of where my gaming appetite is drawn to. I do like RPGs, but I have a hard time finishing them due to the time involved in getting into them. Job and other responsiblities tend to get in the way. And I do like many adventure games, but the arcade flavored gaming is absolutely my favorite. :yeah:

What a cliffhanger!! Finish the thought, please!!!

As for me... I'm pretty open-minded about games as well. My interests lie in pretty much any genre of game, with distinct exception of sports titles... never could muster the interest to even try one out. >_< I suppose that actually stems from my disinterest in the sports themselves.

I guess the biggest thing I look for in a game is... is it fun?? Though I've pretty much always been able to find some redeeming qualities of a game despite any flaws, and yes, actually have fun playing them. (I think I'd be a pretty horrible game reviewer!) X_D I suppose what I really look for in a game I'm playing boils down to the type of game it is. If it's an adventure or RPG, I'd want the story to be good... if it's a platformer, I'd probably be focusing on the level design and hope it's really well-done. Fighting/multiplayer/puzzle would be all about gameplay and controls. Graphics and sound I would put as fringe qualities that can standout and really add to the experience of any game if they're remarkable... but on the whole, not entirely that important.

Naturally, and in an ideal world, I'd want any game I play to excel in all departments... but if I had to prioritize them, that would be about how I'd see things.
Now Playing: Clash Royale (mobile), Gravity Rush 2, Rayman Legends, Project CARS, Uncharted 4 Survival Mode ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ

the three things i look for in a game is good music, good online(for more recent games) and good story. the game that i have been playing the most lately is mw2 online. i thought this game could have been something but the campaign makes zero sense and the music is dull and repetitive. these days i think it hard to find a new game with good music, even the new super mario bros wii i thought had poor music

That's pretty cool you put a lot of focus on the music in a game... I think most people don't really pay attention to it when it's done well, which could be a good and/or bad thing... good in that it doesn't distract you from the game/gameplay and (ideally) sets the mood as you play... but bad in that the game music composers might not get the credit they likely deserve. It does seem that a lot of games these days have pretty bland/uninspired music, and strangely, the ones that come to mind that I've played recently with noticeably cool tunes (Trine, Shatter, & PixelJunk Eden... maybe Braid as well?) are all independent downloadable titles (do indy devs place particular importance on good music??).

As far as retail titles go... the music in Uncharted 2 had a pretty "epic" feel to it... and I heard that Nier was supposed to have some amazing BGM as well... but I can't really think of any other current gen titles...

I prefer sandbox style games since I've never been fond of the whole "get lost, back track, look up a guide" style of games.... but I effing love Ocarina of Time. That's mostly because of the engaging story to it. So if a capturing storyline can make me enjoy a style of gameplay in which I despise, I'd say that's a high point. But simplicity, a rocking soundtrack, replayability, and multiplayer (SPLITSCREEN!!!), as well as codes are all other very important aspects to me.

Endure and survive...
first and foremost if the game isn't fun, it isn't for me.

so for me

i like games where you can build up a character to some degree (pokemon, fallout, oblivion, monster hunter.)
i like engaging stories that make me care about how the game plays out.
i like sandbox style games where you can free roam over a vast area (gta, saboteur, read dead redemption, gun, fallout, oblivion.)
i like longer games, that don't just end when you kill the final boss or whatever.
i also like games where you have a wide variety of activities to do during the game - driving, shooting, flying, racing, etc...
replay value is nice too. i would like to get a 100 hours out of a game at the least truthfully.

good multiplayer (online or other), good graphics, good soundtrack are all things i like too, but not a must.

Likes:

-Action Adventure games.
-Survival Horror. Resi Evil, Silent Hill, Fatal Frame etc. My type of genre without a doubt!
-Point and click adventure type games. The early Lucas Arts games are just fantastic.
-Games with an emphasis on stealth. Love MGS, Splinter Cell, Hitman etc
-I'm always up for a good platformer. Sly Cooper series is one of my fave's.
-FPS with a good storyline. Yeah that probably sounds like a contradiction in terms.
-A few RTS type games. Especially in the mould of the Commandos series on PC.
- A few sports games. The Top Spin series, FIFA, Pro Evo.
-Mutiplayer component in games is great and fun but not what I'd call a deal breaker for me.

Eye candy great graphics is not a must for me at all.
Xbox achievements or whatever I hardly take notice of. If the game is fun I play. if it's feels tiresome or boring I stop. Achievements make no difference either way.
Replay value not a must. Too many games too little time. :P

Dislikes:

-Most RPG's. A few action RPG's like Mass Effect, I do like.
-Beat 'em ups.
-SHMUPS.
-Racing games.
-Construction and management simulation games.
-Those quirky crazy Japanese off the wall weirdo type games.
-No time for strictly based puzzle games.

Come to think of it, achievemtents will play effect in whether i get a game or not... If a game looks good and i really want to get it, achievements will not effect my decision. But on the other hand, if the game looks like garbage, i will get it if it has an easy achievement list.

For example the game King Kong, i would have never played that game if it wasnt for the easy 1000/1000. I had gamefly at the time so it wasnt like i was wasting all this money on games i would beat in a day and then have no use for..

Speaking of gamefly, i might have to renew my membership, its quite the deal if your an achievement whore like myself

Xbox 360 Achievements are the reason why my PS3 isn't being used for anything other than to watch my blu-ray movies lol.
