For those of you who don't know about the ASCII Pad 64, click here to read Alxbly's review of this controller.

:n64: My ASCII Collection as of 01-08-2011

Click HERE to go to the full gallery.

Let's do some comparisons of the colors to the regular N64 controllers... :eh:

Silver ASCII vs. Millennium 2000

Gold ASCII vs. Gold/Nintendo Power 100

Clear Blue ASCII vs. Grape/Ice/Japan Clear Blue

Clear Red ASCII vs. Watermelon/Japan Clear Red

Clear Black ASCII vs. Smoke/Jusco 30th Edition

:n64: What Other Colors Are There?
I am currently missing only 1 color that I know exists - a (metallic) black. The picture below (left) is from Alxbly who has 1 of that color. The picture on the right is from PlayAsia. There is no way for me to confirm/deny this, but I want to say that there is 1 more color that hasn't been found. The reason is because I believe the last color would have a red plug, so that there is an even number of controllers. Currently there are 6 ASCII controllers with blue plugs, and another 5 with red.

UPDATED COLOR LIST HERE.

Do you know why the silver and mauve controllers have a blue port? and the gold one has a red port?
The cord + plug on the ASCII controllers is a very distinctive part of these controllers, and is worth discussing. First, the plugs come in 2 colors: blue and a red/pink. There are no other colors, and every ASCII controller has one of the 2 colors. Second, from all of the pictures that I have seen of the ASCII controllers on website and auction pages, the color of the plugs stay consistent with the controller - that means a Silver ASCII controller will always have a blue plug and never a red/pink.

Here is a list of the controllers and what color plugs they have:
Blue:
- Silver
- Mauve
- Black
- Clear Blue
- Clear Black
- Blue Marble

Red/Pink:
- Gold
- Clear Red
- Clear White
- Red Marble
- White

Wow that is so odd! I wonder if it is easy to replace those cords if we wanted. I do not remember if it would be easy as the last time I opened a controller up I did not pay attention to the port cord.
It is NOT possible to replace the cords. As with any regular N64 controller, the cords are attached/soldered to the motherboards that are inside the controllers. While it is possible to change out the controller motherboards to swap it with a different color, it is actually MUCH more difficult on the ASCII controllers because there is a 2nd motherboard inside the controller. The 2nd motherboard is responsible for the turbo functions of the controller, and is attached/soldered to the main motherboard. So because of this, it is impossible to swap out the motherboards + cord/plug of the ASCII controllers.

I will take a picture of the next ASCII controller I open up to clean, and show you this 2nd motherboard - although you can kind of see it already behind the turbo buttons on the clear controllers.

Hi all,
I've just purchased two of these from Japan, a clear pink (which I assume is the red one pictured above) pad, and one which is two-tone, clear white on top and clear navy blue on the bottom. This latter one doesn't seem to be listed above - I assume it isn't the clear white one (as that one does not appear to be two-tone in the picture of the boxed unit above)?

Can anyone help me to identify it?
Otakuzoku, could you take some pictures of it to be posted online so we can see what you described?

Not to sound self-centered :-8 but as the world's most complete collector of ASCII controllers, I'd have to say that your clear pink sounds like an original and genuine ASCII controller. However the 2nd one that you described, clear white and clear navy, sounds like someone switched out the bottom of the controller. The ASCII's are either 1.) full clear - same color on both top and bottom or 2.) two-toned but the bottom is always a solid black.

So far, I've identified and own 4 of the full clear colors. I've identified 7 different two-toned colors, and I have 6 of them. Let me know if you have any other questions :mario:

Thanks Alex and Mark for you comments. As an electrical engineer I've got a very experienced hand at soldering so I understand the process well and know that this can definitely be done.

However let's stay on the original subject of this topic thread, which is on ASCII controllers. The plugs (red and blue) are key parts and unique identifying aspects of the ASCII controllers, so switching them out is not something that most collectors would probably do. :-X While the thought of painting the plug to match the color is almost acceptable/understandable - for the silver, gold, mauve, and white - I still would personally prefer to have it the original way. And for the 4 clear ASCII controllers, switching them out with a clear blue, clear red, smoke might make sense. No idea what to do about the clear white - as there was never a N64 controller with a plug that matches that color. :eh:

Here is some more info about the ASCII Pad 64 controller. The below information was taken from Nintendo Power, Issue #102 (November 1997) Page 103. I've circled in red the little bit of information that was written about it. The excerpt is from the Tokyo Game Show (September 1997) in Japan.

"ASCII also unveiled its new ASCII Pad 64 controllers in various colors and equipped with turbo on every button."

Just when I thought I had discovered all of the colors of the ASCII Pad 64...

http://www.ebay.com/itm/170837804332 (I bought this one today)

I had known for quite some time that the Clear/Clear Red one existed (link below) because I've seen several auctions for it across eBay, Yahoo! Japan, and a couple other Japan auction places. It only makes sense that the Clear/Clear Blue one is also out there somewhere.

Hi all,
I've just purchased two of these from Japan, a clear pink (which I assume is the red one pictured above) pad, and one which is two-tone, clear white on top and clear navy blue on the bottom. This latter one doesn't seem to be listed above - I assume it isn't the clear white one (as that one does not appear to be two-tone in the picture of the boxed unit above)?

Can anyone help me to identify it?
This previous post also verifies it... I was ignorant to it when he made the post, didn't think it was real - but it seems like that was actually the first time that anyone's seen one. The Clear/Clear Blue and Clear/Clear Red are definitely added to the list of ones that ASCII released.

This brings the total count of ASCII Pad 64 variations up to 13. 12 of which I have in my collection.

Would you care to make a list of these two-toned 'on Black' ASCII controllers as well? I'm sure this would help reassure other collectors that they they're getting an official release.

I'm aware of 3 so far... Blue Marble on Black, Silver on Black and Gold on Black.
You have half the list danilochka. If you look carefully at my diagram, you'll see that the coloring of the words basically give away which ones have black backs. There are 7 of them with the black backs (I have 6 of them) and they are:

  • silver/black
  • white/black
  • mauve/black
  • gold/black
  • blue marble/black
  • red marble/black
  • black/black (not pictured)

Not sure if this is a legit ascii pad, but it has a red plug, maybe this and the metallic black are the ones you are missing http://www.ebay.com/itm/ASCII-Pad-Controller-Gold-For-Nintendo-64-Import-JAPAN-Video-Game-1353-/300894727376?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item460eb92cd0
Yayo, the auction link you posted is for a "gold" ASCII pad. It is pretty common and I already have 2 of them.

Just to close out this topic... my ASCII pad collection is now already completed. I have acquired all colors (13 different ones) that I have ever seen on the internet.

This proves that patience does actually pay off in the end :)
You guys want to know the most ironic/interesting part of the story? When this one showed up, there was also another auction that also had it. So all of a sudden, 2 of them appeared! It was good because it gave me a backup plan in case I didn't win the first one (which I did).

I hope you learn that there is another type of ASCII controller so you'll have another sneaky variant to track down :yeah:
I'm both scared and excited at the same time that there might be at least 1 more color out there... 13 is a really odd number and doesn't make sense to me. That's just my theory, and I've tried contacting ASCII in the past about this subject (how many different ones were released) but they never got back to me -_-

Hmm that's interesting macN64. I've already seen that listing on Yahoo for that same controller you posted - and I know that the seller also has another clear red/pink one for sale. The clear red/pink has a red plug - perhaps that's the plug that shows up in the photo? Maybe it got crossed up when he was taking the picture? You can't say for 100% certainty that the plug you see on the Mauve controller photo actually belongs to it (but it might). I'm still pretty certain that all plugs stay consistent with the controller colors, but then again you never know unless you have the controller in front of you. All ASCII controller colors I've come across up to this point in my collecting has stayed consistent.

LOL I love the Dodgeball reference! I prefer to think of myself as a "take the bull by the horns" kind of guy :P

Posted Image

Nah, I'm not even blinking twice at this. If it was a discussion of a different color altogether of the controller itself, I might consider buying it. But the plug? As you pointed out bluedog, it could very well have a possibility of a Frankenstein-switch of the guts*.

*As a side note, I've taken apart an ASCII controller for the sake of cleaning it, and trust me - it has about TWICE the parts of a regular N64 controller because of all the turbo switches. It even has an extra mini-board that controls the turbo logic inside. It took me a couple times to figure out the right process to disassemble and then properly reassemble the whole thing. It's not easy, and can get very confusing.

I just wanted to make a quick bump to this thread (an oldie but a goodie) for me to properly acknowledge and congratulate @Cabanon on getting that metallic blue ASCII controller.

For what it's worth, it was somewhat on my radar years ago when I was very actively hunting different versions of the ASCII pad on Yahoo Japan Auctions. I've seen pictures of this version, but was never really able to 100% confirm if it's a variation (due to lighting and glare from the camera) of the metallic black version. I did save a picture of 1 auction which had unfortunately ended years ago, which looks like this:

Posted Image

It looks pretty much identical to the one that Cabanon has acquired, so it's now officially confirmed that there are a total of 14 versions. I'm out on the hunt again to find this one metallic blue (with blue plug) to complete my collection!

so who's the lucky winner of that 1$ boxed clear pink controller ? I completely missed the deadline last night and i really hope it's someone here that got it.
It wasn't me... I had it in my watch list and missed it as well. The box itself doesn't look to be in great condition (I can see some rips to the front & back of the box) so I guess that's why I didn't have it committed to my memory or set an alarm.

I recently also had a slightly "bad" experience from buying a boxed ASCII controller from yamatoku on EBay. I purchased a boxed Silver controller, but when it arrived and I had a chance to take a closer look at the serial number of the box, I was disappointed to find that the box itself was actually for a Gold. So basically what must have happened was that someone swapped the controller and put the Silver controller inside the box which had the serial number & product code for a Gold.

In case anyone is wondering, I have a running list of barcodes/serial numbers + ASCII part numbers that has been built from images and my own personal collection. In case anyone wants to have a deeper discussion (Cabanon is probably the only person) I can share my list/database and we can continue building that data together.

No I'd be interested as well. I think all 3 of us have 14 of the 15 known colors. I'm missing metallic black and yall are missing the metallic blue if I'm not mistaken!
I'm only missing the metallic teal. You're missing metallic black, and Cabanon is missing the metallic teal & black. All 3 of us have the metallic blue at this point (I got mine from Cabanon, he had 2 of them).

The gold & silver box are very easy to identify. on the front's plastic, bottom right corner, there's either a gold strip or a silver strip as you can see below. Im surprised you didnt catch that one before.
Wow I can't believe that I never noticed that myself either - good catch. While we're on that note, I know that I've seen also white & black strips on the front (bottom-right corner of the plastic window) of the box. I'm not 100% sure what they match up to, but I know for certain there are gold/silver/white/black strips. From my limited ability to translate it, the top row says something along the lines of "new colors" and the bottom is referring to "limited edition/time available" is my best guess.

Here is a compressed list of the various ASCII controllers and their respective ASCII Part Numbers & Serial Numbers as seen on the back of the boxes. There might be some mistakes, as all of the information is gathered from either my own collection or other EBay pictures.

Also notice the Clear Pink half & Clear Blue half image are missing on this Marble Red box. very strange.
Yeah, that's very weird... maybe it's a mis-print on the early revisions of the box. Cool collectible 8)

Thanks for helping fill out the missing boxes/info. As of right now I don't think we'll find any of the other information for the metallic colors as they're very rarely to be seen CIB (but they did exist at some point). Those metallic colors - white, purple, black, blue, teal - all most likely came in the clear plastic boxes. That's an assumption that I am making, since I have the white controller in the plastic box and we've seen the metallic black one appear in a plastic box (there's some very old pictures of Alxbly's metallic black controller which was CIB).

Also another very interesting thing is that the Clear Gray (full) version of the controller has been seen in both versions of the boxes - the cardboard type as well as the clear plastic type. I've got pictures with matching barcodes to verify, which makes things a bit confusing and intriguing at the same time.

http://www.agetec.com/ and they seems to be still alive. I wonder if anyone could message them and ask if they have any idea bout these controller ever making it to the US market and/if or they know about the various colour available.
They operate out of Sunnyvale... I can literally drive there within an hour. I might have to track them down or at least e-mail/call them to see if I can get ahold of anyone who has been around since the ASCII days!

im curious to see this
Cabanon, here are a couple of pictures for you to compare. As you can see, both of these versions are for the full clear black version, which has serial number ASC-0901BLS with barcode T4988606101665. The one in the clear box is in my personal collection, whereas the other version in the cardboard box was from an EBay auction back in July which I didn't bid on (I think I missed it or wasn't in the market at the time to collect the various box editions).

So this is Guripa, the final ASCII Pad 64 model to be released and this is confirmation of the barcode to add to the list
Thanks for that info danilochka! Where did you dig up that product image?

I've updated the original table/spreadsheet (see below) to now include that variant, which seems to match up to that metallic teal color... I believe only 1 collector currently has it.

Spoiler: click to toggle

For one reason or another, Guripa is the combination of two words!

Green- グリン (adjective form) AND Pearl- パル

Cool... so what do you make of the other -pa words? (Pinpa, Murapa) Do they match up to any of the other colors we've seen already such as the mauve/purple color? My educated/logical guess is that Ganmetto and Gurimetto lines up to the metallic blue and metallic black colors - we've seen EBay sellers list Gurimetto as the metallic black color. Thoughts?
