Great movies where the bad guy wins. I get so bored sometimes of the usual "Hero kills the villain, saves the day, gets the girl and rides off into the sunset." Making us all feel warm and fuzzy inside. NOT! Generic Hollywood type endings? Stories of good guys winning and bad boys getting what they deserve? Not all the time, thanks. I'll pass on that, every now and again. So I was thinking of where the opposite happens. When the villain turns the table on the so called good and righteous and comes out on top. Now mind you, I'm not thinking here of el-cheapo slasher movies or something to that effect. I'm thinking of quality engrossing films that pull you in emotionally and either provide an ending that is riveting, unexpected and/or thought provoking. Movies that reflect real-life in the sense that the bad guy can and does triumph, on occasion. So with that in mind, what are your choices? I was thinking that some of my fave's would be: -The Usual Suspects (1995) -Seven (1995) -Arlington Road (1999) -Memento (2000) -No Country for Old Men (2007) Just to say I didn't add this post to the already made topic of movies we have recently seen. I thought this probably deserved a thread apart from the other. |

OHHHHHHHH mah gawwwd... Leon/The Professional is MY FAVORITE MOVIE OF ALL TIME!!! And holy crapolla... I freakin loved The Usual Suspects, Seven, Memento, and Dawn of the Dead (the new one). Heh... we should put a big fat "SPOILERS!!!" in the topic title... I've not seen a few of these movies, and just seeing them mentioned here already tells me sump'n about the ending. Anyways... I can't remember how the very ending of Platoon was, but the death of the character typically shown on the movie's cover was kind of a result of the "bad guy"... And from what I remember, the ending to The Dark Knight was rather grim... |

I so agree with you Gazza, cool thread. While I generally enjoy formulaic, Hollywood-ending films, I definitely like to spice things up by watching darker films at times. I love the Cube trilogy, although only the last two (Cube 2: Hypercube and Cube Zero) really feature the good guys losing. The first one has a more ambiguous (in this regard) ending. EDIT: I'm not sure whether Grave of the Fireflies counts, because there aren't very prevalent "bad guys" in it. Certainly, the good guys lose, incredibly poignantly. It's an incredibly sad film, but truly amazing. I was thinking about it for days. I recommend it, but be prepared to shed a tear or two. I will edit this post when I think of other titles that satisfy the thread's topic, and until then, it seems I have some good cinematic recommendations to put in my "to watch" queue! Cheers, Franklint Edited by Franklint, Jan 9 2011, 06:39 AM.

One of these days, I'm gonna list (or take a pic) of my movie library and post on this forum. Just for you. ... and as I recall, we have similar music tastes, too!! Or... at least a similar appreciation of Rob Dougan's "Clubbed 2 Death"

Yeah I loved it as well! Speaking of it, one of the stars of that film Pete Postlethwaite passed away recently. He was a great character actor! Loved him in films such as: In the Name of the Father, Amistad, Brassed Off, The Shipping News, The Town, Baz Luhrmann's Romeo + Juliet. I haven't seen "Inception" yet, but I believe he was very good in that one as well. |

Bless his soul. And you need to watch Inception soon! He plays a very important role in the movie(makes me feel sad thinking about it now that he's passed away).

floorcat, i keep a running database of the movies we own on dvd on imdb.com. we have 427 as of now. i would be curious to see how many of those you had too. my dvd list oh yeah, i think the music taste thing is similar too. bound to happen since we are both so cool alice lawless - scarface is a good one. (own it) i thought about naming it, but i was conflicted as i kind of view tony montana as the bad guy in it, and he doesn't "win" so to speak but i could see how the other guys could be viewed as the bad guy too. |

Oooooh... thanks, I'm gonna have to scour that list!! (My movie library is piddle-sticks in comparison.) I guess it really depends on your point of view... Tony Montana is obviously a "bad guy" in terms of society/law... but since the whole movie is about him and his rise to power (and quick fall from it), he could be seen as the protagonist of the movie, in which case "the bad guy wins" when he dies. |

Heck, it has taken us over 9 years to acquire all those. It also cost a lot of money that could have been put to better use We do not have cable, so movies are important to us. Yeah, I can easily see how scarface could be viewed from either perspective. I like Tony Montana, but usually by the end of the movie, I hate him I think the main thing I have against him is his killing of Spoiler: click to toggle , but then again some good was in him still when he will not harm that guy with his family. This is making me want to watch it again

Don't let the "say good night to the Bad Guy" part confuse you. Scarface ending for those of you living under a rock Plus, he's the protagonist, so anyone against him (antagonist) is considered the bad guy (think Grand Theft Auto and with the cops). And if they win, it qualifies. |

Very true, I am just saying I could see it as either way. I mean who ever wins, they are all murderers and drug dealers. The bad guys both win and lose to me I kind of think Public Enemies is the same way. John Dillenger is the protagonist, but is clearly a bad guy. I know it is law enforcement that takes him down, but Melvin Purvis is not really depicted as a good man. I think Way of the Gun fits here too. Depicting criminals as hero type protagonists makes it cloudy for me. Like I said, I can totally see how Scarface fits, I am just saying It kind of goes either way to me. |

How would you classify Johnny Depp in the movie "Blow".... I mean he is technically a "bad guy", but i found myself rooting for him throughout the movie haha. In the end, he gets caught, so he loses and the cops win. I saw the cops as the enemys since i didnt want him getting caught -Corey |

wow, i need to seriously start reading all previous posts before replying. You guys were already debating that exact scenario... Funny how you use public enemy as one too, also another movie with Debb. Such an antagonist isnt he? Even pirates of the carribean, pirates are suppose to be the bad guys, but you root for him. lol -Corey |

Well, i watched "The Town" last night, and let me start off by saying GREAT MOVIE! I definately reccomend it if you have not already seen it. The fact it takes place in my states capital makes it that much better for me. I was constantly saying "I've been there" to myself as the movie was going on haha. Some actors did hack the bostonian accent, Blake Lively sounded friggen russian..What can you expect i guess, its not an accent that can be taught. Anyways, the bad guy, Dougy (Ben Affleck) gets away in this movie. Even though hes the guy you root for, in the end, hes still the bad guy. -Corey |
