I wanted to say "Foreign film recommendations!" but I figure not everyone is into that kind of thing, so I just stuck with " Anyways, I've been on a sort of Korean film kick lately... and there's two gems that I think are really REALLY good and that everyone and their half-witted closet gimp should see: My Sassy Girl (a.k.a. Yupki Girl) Silmido Both are apparently closely/loosely (respectively) (... that's a lot of -ly words!) -based on real events... and should be a grand ol' time if you're into romantic comedies and heavy war films. (No, not at the same time!) I'll leave it to you to guess which movie is in which genre.  And of course, other (LESS obscure) foreign films I think might be worth a watch: Lιon: The Professional (foreign director, at least) Lola rennt (a.k.a. Run Lola Run) 火垂るの墓 (a.k.a. Grave of the Fireflies) - heart-wrenching and animated! [EDIT] Just thought I'd change up the thread theme... since we obviously see more movies than we tend to recommend (here). Which could make this thread a good "I saw yadda-yadda and it was really good/enjoyable/crappy BECAUSE it was yadda-yadda" kind of thread. Tampopo is one of my favorite films and it would be right up your ally if you haven't seen it. I actually haven't seen many Asian films. I saw something last year called 20xx (it was a year, but I can't remember what year) and it was about Andriods or time travel or smoking drugs or something. I didn't get it at all, partly because the subtitles were poorly localized. All of Kenneth Branagh (Shakespeare-related) films are great -- I'm especially fond of Henry V. There's also Julia Taymor's Titus, which is sort of a post-modern take on Titus Andronicus (with Anthony Hopkins serving as Titus!). There's also Richard III with Ian Mckellen as Richard. And Prospero's Books, an excellent take on The Tempest. The Five Senses was a rather compelling thing where each of the characters had some affinity (and deficiency) with a specific sense. The Station Agent is about a dwarf (little person, not the Tolkien kind!) who inherits an abandoned train depot, but it's mostly about character development. L'Enfant is about this immature guy (see title) who has a baby (see title) with a woman, but he really isn't capable of handling it. I remember loving Rois et reine but I'm not sure what to say about it without spoiling anything. If you don't mind something older, The Conformist is great and, if you don't mind something really old, The Bicycle Thief is a classic! Blow-up is great, but you really need to watch it twice to understand it. If you just want want movies where you don't have to think though, go with Gladiator, V for Vendetta, and Die Hard -- in that order. And of course, the best movie ever made is Fantasia, an aural and visual orgasm. |

I think I just fell in love with you! To me, Fantasia is one of animation's finest moments. The "Night On Bald Mountain" scene is the most terrifying yet beautiful thing I have ever seen in a film. For anybody that doesn't know what I'm talking about, click here and prepare to be mesmerized. |

You could not be more right since you agree with me! I absolutely adore the juxtaposition of Bald Mountain and the Ave Maria. Plus it has the Philadelphia Orchestra during its heyday under Leopold Stokowski. The only part of the movie I don't really like is The Rite of Spring, but that's because I don't like Stravinsky (though the Firebird in Fantasia 2000 is very well done!) Take a look at I would love to see a third movie made. Holst's Planets are dying to be set to animation!this. |

I don't watch many films, but I'd recommed: Comedy: Monty Python's Life of Brian (my favourite ever film), A Fish Called Wanda, Carry on Cleo (and most of the Carry ons, but Cleo is my favourite), Black and white comedies: Where's That Fire, Ask a Policeman Oh, Mr Porter! (the above three are 1940's (ish) Will Hay comedies, most of his films are great) Blockheads, Way Out West, The Sons of the Desert (also known as Fraternally Yours), A Chump at Oxford, (the above four are Laurel and Hardy films, they also did other great films), More serious: Alien, Aliens, 2001: A Space Oddysey (though preferably read the book, it's superb), The Shawshank Redemption (superb...), The Green Mile, The Ring (the Japanese version, not the inferior American remake), The Italian Job, Forest Gump, Casino Royale, the Indiana Jones films er, these are mainly films that most people know are great, so I'll stop. I don't watch many minority films (no minority cinema around here, and I only tend to watch films whilst I'm at a mates' house). |

Funny, I happened to watch Run Lola Run last night after a friend recommended it. Grave of the Fireflies is a great film and so different from the other Ghibli films. Leon I wouldn't consider to be a foreign film, but good none the less.
I was in a play a few years ago based on that film. I played one of the policemen (not the Will Hay character). |

Oh yeah... Tampopo! I really need to see that again... the only parts I remember are the ramen-slurping and jubblie-dining. Are you thinking of Kar Wai Wong's "2046"? I think that was even on my Netflix queue... back when I had an account. Which was before that movie even came out.
Did Studio Ghibli do Grave of the Fireflies? I thought it was someone else... like someone Miyazaki personally picked for the task since he didn't think he could do it.
You're totally right... and that's why I said "(foreign director, at least)"... which I think is probably why it has such a foreign feel to me. |

I highly recommend the film American History X. Its an incredible film about a neo-Nazi and his change of heart after befriending an African-American man in prison. However, his younger brother follows his previous footsteps and becomes an active neo-Nazi. Its certainly not for the faint hearted as it contains excessive amounts of violence, including a truly disturbing "curb stomp" scene. But the message of the film is really powerful, definitely worth a watch. NOTE: Despite the appearance of the cover, the film does not promote racism. |

Don't forget the sex scenes with food!
That's the one. I thought it was immediately forgettable. Maybe I missed something in translation -- or maybe it really is boring. |

On the DVD case it says, "From Studio Ghibli, home of Spirited Away, and director Isao Takahata". It is also part of the Studio Ghibli DVD collection, but my copy pre-dates that. I don't know anymore than that.
Makes me wince just thinging about that scene.  (great film though) |

Changed up the thread title to make it more... I dunno... interesting. Anyways, recent movies I've seen (which really spans the last month or so, since I didn't even have the time/energy to turn on my TV over the last 2 weeks): mainstream: The Island Unleashed Shooter The Number 23 indie: The Cut Runs Deep foreign: Windstruck (Korean) The Beast and the Beauty (Korean) The King and the Clown (Korean) Art Museum by the Zoo (Korean) The Showdown (Korean) And my basic sentiments are... Really REALLY enjoyed, and will be in my DVD collection someday: The Island Unleashed Shooter Windstruck The Beast and the Beauty The King and the Clown Had potential, but ended up being a crap waste of my time: The Number 23 Okay... had its moments... but rather dull: Art Museum by the Zoo The Showdown Pretty powerful, in that sad/depressing kinda way: The Cut Runs Deep |

Just in the last couple weeks I've watched I Am Legend, Stephen King's The Mist, Hairspray, Enchanted and Cloverfield. I personally loved I Am Legend, The Mist and Cloverfield. The other two were because my wife wanted to watch 'em.

Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer. Most people consider it a mediocre movie, but I really liked it. Of course, that may be because I read the comics in the past and I'm still somewhat of a fan

I just saw the Dark Knight. I liked it alot, although it was kinda long. I also like how much different it was than other Batman movies I've seen. |

I've seen it. Despite the corniness of the title, it really isn't that bad. Overall it's just a dumb action film, so if you're in the mood for a little mindless violence, Reign Of Fire is perfect. |
