Today i've spent most of my time adding a magazines "table" to my game collection database plus the related queries and php code to administer the data. I've added details for all my Nintendo related magazines and scanned the front covers. The data is presented in a nice scrollable and sortable table. Click on a magazine to edit its details. When the mouse passes over the cover description text, the scanned image of that cover is displayed in a pseudo-popup. I'm very proud of my work. Yes, this is how an*l this collecting thing can get ![]() Edited by Mk II, Jan 16 2011, 04:58 PM.

That sounds like it took a good bit of time! While collecting is not my cup of tea, I can sure appreciate those who share theirs on here for all to see

I swear Collecting comes with OCD. My spreadsheets and other documents related to my collection are insane! List of all N64 Controllers/Games/Systems/Peripherals. If i own them, how many i own, if they are complete (if not, which exact parts im missing) If you use google docs and need a spreadsheet/checklist for N64 items, let me know! Ill be more than happy to "share" mine with you and you can use it for your own collection -Corey |

i really dont like to use spreadsheets for this kind of thing. Spreadsheets are great for numbers, data belongs in a database. All my collections are stored in SQL database tables. This means i can make all kinds of queries and searches with blinding speed. Or generate an entire website with just one page of code. |

I just use a printed list of N64 PAL games where I've marked if I have BOX, intructions, cart and I also use the Nintendoage.com collection section. Good call on the SQL Dbase though. I wish I had as much time as you lol |

well, they are at first glance. the learning curve is a bit steeper at first but thats the price you pay for flexibility. Anything a spreadsheet can do, a database can do better and/or faster. And a database can be queried from a webpage; a HUGE advantage. And once you've got the data, you can do all kinds of cool stuff. Like my signature banner; it is generated automatically with a background image and a simple database query to count all my Nintendo cartridges. Always up to date without the need for any action on my part.
its amazing how fast you can set up a basic system. the devil's in the details of course (as always). But to be honest: i'm a C/C++/PHP programmer and mainly develop web-based interfaces to large collections of medical data. So this kind of stuff is rather easy-peasy for me... |

Thats exactly what i do, on a spreadsheet. With games, i have the North American List, and the Japanese list. I also have complete lists of every controller, system, and peripheral from each country. As far as databases? are their any that i could use for free? Im not a computer wizz, but id like to play around with something like that! -Corey |

one of the best database engines is free and open source : MySQL Easily combined with PHP scripting it is a very powerful tool and the driving force behind many large websites |

Today i have added a new feature to my collection database / interface. Now i can export a database dump to my DSi XL with just one mouse click. It creates the data dump files, automatically opens a FTP connection and transfers the dump files to the DS. I've written a custom program for the DS that allows me to browse and search the data, neatly grouped by console. I use this a lot when im looking for new finds. Life is good (when you know how to program). Edited by Mk II, Feb 5 2011, 04:58 PM.

Lifes shitty, when you have ocd and wish you knew how to program I guess my spreadsheets do the trick for me at the moment. I think my jealousy would get worse if i actually saw the layout of your program ![]() -xICooRsYIx |

Just saw this thread MkII, and I can relate completely. I actually did much the same thing a few years back (I'm sure at a very basic level compared to yours), with MySQL/PHP to keep a complete database of all 96 or so of the JP-only N64 games. I was DAMN proud of it... Even got it to pull the original Japanese titles (text) and boxart images for each game (if available) and allowed users to leave comments per game... with a fully functional search page based on title/date/genre (with results sorting to match ). I know I still have the MySQL tables and PHP pages somewhere, but I think the (school) PHP server I was using is now gone. Sadly, I never carried out my ambitions of the site to the point of "going live".

well, i can relate to that... happens far too often ![]() thing is i'd have to make a special version without administration privileges or add a secure login procedure if i want to put it online. and that's just boring work involving lots of testing... yuck UPDATE i've started work on the online version of my collection database and making great progress. I've managed to export the database tables - the biggest hurdle by far - and made some experimental query pages. The site will probably "go live" this weekend. Stay tuned! Heh... that's pretty much precisely why I never ended up getting much further on my project... well, almost. I figured I wouldn't worry so much about security as much as do a sort of wiki set-up, where anyone could make any changes they wanted to the details of any game, but those changes would be recorded and if need be, easily reverted. Kinda lost steam to go further at that point... ![]() Anyways, congrats on your progress on the public version of your database!!

My collection site is online now @ http://www.mk2software.com/vgc/ The entire site is generated 'on the fly' by PHP scripts and MySQL database queries. The pages are designed using CSS styling & layout and use Prototype framework AJAX calls to add interactive functionality. Caveats: the LCD Games page is still under construction and the site is designed for large highres screens (1920x1080 recommended) Lemme know what you think . Edited by Mk II, Feb 12 2011, 04:51 PM.

After years of wanting one I finally picked up a used handheld barcode scanner with USB connector for just a few euro's. I've already started to use it in my own applications. I have added a barcode label print feature to my game & console trade database. This will be used to print a unique barcode label for every item. Then all i have to do is scan the barcode to retrieve it or check it out - any database mutations will be executed in the background and an optional invoice / shipping list is generated. All this will greatly speed up operations and help to prevent human error. It's more fun to compute! I intend to add EAN barcode numbers to all my collection databases too (books, records, cds, boxed games & consoles). No more confusion! things can get very confusing when you have 10 or 20 copies of the same record sleeve ![]()
