That isn't the only thing I was referring to. Maybe the game wouldn't be so generic in its settings, level designs, weapons, etc. if the developers focused on that stuff instead of graphics. And the game also runs at 30fps, sometimes less, which I think is inexcusable for any game these days. I thought choppy framerates were something which died off with the Nintendo 64. Also, I don't think split-screen is on the way out, it is just taking a backseat right now whilst companies attempt to push their online networks. Once they're fully established as a standard then I think we'll see a return of local multiplayer. After all, I don't think it is any coincidence that the market-leading console has the largest selection of local multiplayer titles. The funny thing about that game is that the graphics were the last thing on the developer's minds. But they also have more experience with the system so it was probably far easier for them to achieve such graphics. Yes it is. Do you know why? Because the developers stated that they were going to focus on graphics above all else. Just like other FPS developers! The ones bleeding money! So you know it is a good idea! I just hope that their next project, The Grinder, will have everything which this game lacks. That's because neither territory currently needs a sales boost like Japan does. Once sales are slow-going then it will be released. |

Wii sales appear to be slowing in the UK now. Demand is definitely less than last year. As an example, a year ago a used Wii in the UK would cost about £150-£180 (and a new Wii costs £180)! These days second hand Wii's are everywhere and you can get a really good condition boxed one for less than £100. Speculatively, I think that as the second hand market floods, we'll see the Wii's "new gamer" target market going for the cheaper, used, option. After all, if you don't play games often, there's no point paying more than you have to for the console. |

Yes, but "appear to be slowing" is different that "slow all year". They will need to actually slow to a crawl and be there for a while before Nintendo will release the new colour there. And with Wii Sports Resort just around the corner, it could be a while before that happens. I'd expect it will be released in the UK before North America for varies reasons, but if I were to fancy a guess then I'd say November is the absolute earliest it would be released. Though I think it will more likely be released either in March 2010 to give a boost to the end of the fiscal year, or over the summer which is usually slow anyway. |

It's difficult to tell, but the appearance of second hand Wii's and their drop in value makes me think that the Wii sales over here may start to decline as they have done in Japan. I think that both the Wii and the 360 are almost at saturation point over here and that the PS3 is gonna start being the next big thing... after it gets a price cut. I'm just guessing all this though. |

Well, Monster Hunter Tri is now the best-selling third-party console game in Japan this generation, beating out MGS4 for the top spot. So NOW can we have some real third party support now that the ridiculous canard that third party games can't sell on Nintendo systems has been killed with extreme prejudice? Who am I kidding? They'll probably call it a fluke, or say that Monster Hunter is now kiddy or casual or a non-game or something like that. |

"Monster Hunter 3 is Japan's best-selling third-party Wii game Sinobi posted a list of the top ten third-party games on the Wii in Japan in terms of sales. At the top of the list, based on Enterbrain sales numbers acquired early by Sinobi, sits Capcom's Monster Hunter 3, with 720,000 copies sold. Despite the best-seller status, we doubt Capcom is pleased with these sales numbers. The publisher famously shipped one million copies of the game, which have yet to sell through. While sales of the hardware bundle have been good, the standalone version of the game sold only 40% of its stock in the first week, and is already being dropped in price in some stores by over half". From: http://nintendo.joystiq.com/2009/08/13/monster-hunter-3-is-japans-best-selling-third-party-wii-game/ Monster Hunter was always gonna sell by the bucket-load in Japan, which makes it the exception, not the rule. How many other Wii third party games also got a perfect score in famitsu and how many are gonna be launched with super-sexy newly colored Wii hardware? Whether it can sell the same in other regions needs to be seen. Regardless, it's no fluke, it's a game that a lot of people really want. Wii needs more really excellent third party games like this.

How many other third-party efforts are ports or spin-offs instead of an actual mainline entry in the series? I guarantee you that Resident Evil 5 would have sold better on Wii than on the other two systems, probably combined. Instead, the system gets ports and spin-offs of the series. Games like MadWorld, No More Heroes, and The Conduit are NOT good judges of what sells on Wii because they would have sold even worse on the others. Here a company put their full effort into a mainline entry of an established series and it became a huge seller. Who'd have thought that would be successful? |

It sounds like you're trying to convince me that third parties need to do more. I agree, I want to see more good third party games on Wii. Hell, I'm the person that actually buys the good/decent games on Wii because I want to see what the third parties can really do. For example, my Wii games collection with third party titles in bold for extra effect: Animal Crossing Dead Rising Disaster Day of Crisis Eledees Endless Ocean Ghost Squad Harvest Moon Magical Melody House of the Dead Overkill Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess Links Crossbow Training Madworld Manhunt 2 Mario Kart Wii Metroid Prime Corruption No More Heroes Okami Resident Evil Archives Resident Evil 4 Wii Edition Resident Evil Umbrella Chronicles Scarface: The World Is Yours Speed Racer Super Mario Galaxy Trauma Centre Wii Sports Wii Sports Resort As you can see, third party games make up quite a sizeable chunk of my own Wii collection; I ain't shunning them. I'd argue that No More Heroes and The Conduit don't sit alongside each other for the sake of comparison. One is a genuinely inventive, unique and excellent game, the other is merely a relatively solid FPS... but one which which wouldn't have stood out in the sea of other relatively solid FPS's on other consoles. You know where I'm going with that because we discussed it before. You're right though, neither Madworld or No More Heroes was ever gonna be a huge seller; they're niche games, just as Killer7 on Gamecube/PS2 was an excellent game but one with really only niche appeal. And sales reflected that. As for RE5 on Wii outselling the rest... Capcom obviously didn't share you viewpoint on that and neither do I. But we're not gonna know now, so there's not much point in covering the what-if's. |

I don't think the reason why Resident Evil 5 wasn't released on Wii is because it wouldn't sell; RE4 should be proof enough that it would, plus they must have figured there's an audience for Resident Evil or they wouldn't have released the Umbrella Chronicles. As it is, Resident Evil 5 can't work on the Wii and would therefore need some reworking. Really, it wasn't that great of an example because CapCom is giving the Wii better support than quite a few other publishers. A better example would probably be the Dead Space spin-off. It isn't you I'm trying to convince, it's third-parties! All I'm trying to do is understand the situation because it makes no sense to me. I know the difference between the Wii and the other two systems is pretty big, but the important values haven't changed. The PlayStation won support because it offered cheaper development costs and the PS2 won because it was the market leader. The Wii offers both of these values and now suddenly the rules have changed. It's no longer about cost or marketshare, it's about demographics, which even they have now been redefined. What was once "casual" is now "core" and "hardcore" means "mature". "Non-game" has become the term for mass-market appeal and "casual"... well, I don't even know what that means anymore. But apparently it requires third-excuse makers to test the market with third-rate products and use them to determine that their AAA efforts wouldn't sell on Wii. Why is this? I don't believe it's simply about money anymore, not with how little of it the average publisher is actually making on the HD systems. These companies simply do not want to create games for Wii for one reason or another. They're taking any excuse they can find to justify not working with Nintendo and the Wii. This is no longer just conjecture either. Just take a look at this news story: http://www.tomsguide.com/us/Nintendo-Wii-EA-Sports-Game,news-4439.html EA blames the Wii for the loss of staff members. Before the Wii, sports games were used to show how realistic games had become over the previous year. Of course, the Wii has the potential to offer the most realistic sports games ever created thanks to its motion controls, but don't forget that "realism" can be applied only to graphics. To top it off, Madden Football, the most casual game which ever existed before the Wii, is now labeled as a "core" game. This entire industry is just starting to make me sick. |

I'm not really sure why you're bothered... The games you play seem to be almost always Nintendo exclusives (from what i've seen, anyway), particularly Mario games. If that's right, I'm not sure why you'd care about third party support? I don't accept most of what you're saying in that last post, but this is old ground we've covered plenty of times before so that should come as no surprise. Needless to say, I don't believe the Wii is being shunned purely because of artistic reasons, nor do I believe that HD games always lose lots of money. I'd still like to see more good quality third party titles on Wii and I might even be one of the small percentage of Wii owners who actually buys them. |

I don't know how there can be any more proof then when a company basically admits they resent the Wii. The situation is improving for sure, however slowly, though I'm sure history will not be kind to this generation. People will look back and wonder "What the hell were they thinking?" I care because we're all in this together. The growth of the industry -- and not just in monetary value -- relies on all parties doing their part. Slow third-party releases can affect Nintendo's own release schedule, because they might rush a product to market so they can fill a gap. Here's my list with third-party games bolded and Nintendo-published third-party games in italics: Animal Crossing: City Folk Battalion Wars 2 Bomberman Blast [WiiWare] Boom Blox [sold it] de Blob Endless Ocean Lego Star Wars: The Complete Saga Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games Mario Kart Wii Mario Party 8 Mario Strikers Charged Mario Super Sluggers Mercury Meltdown Revolution Metroid Prime 3: Corruption New Play Control! Mario Power Tennis Rayman Raving Rabbids Rubik's World Super Mario Galaxy Super Paper Mario Super Smash Bros. Brawl The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return Thrillville: Off the Rails Tomb Raider: Anniversary Trauma Center: New Blood Wii Music Wii Play Wii Sports 12/27 are third-party, 6/27 are Nintendo-published third party games. If you count those that makes 18/27, or 2/3rds, of my Wii collection are third-party games. Two games I'd recommend you try out are Boom Blox if you like puzzle-type games, and de Blob if you like platformers. |

Is that just because you don't like puzzle games or does it not seem like your kind of thing? I'm actually not so fond of it (seeing as I sold it) but it has received high marks from most people so I still recommend it. It also spawned a sequel so it must have been a sales success, although I've heard the sequel is more of the same and does little to correct the problems of the first. It is EA after all. I've been looking at a little-known game titled Little King's Story which sounds pretty interesting, it's a strategy/RPG which has been compared to Pikmin, which I've never played. Has anyone heard of it? It's gotten favourable reviews, including an 8.5 from GameSpot and IGN, two of the Wii's harshest critics, and 9/10 from GamePro and Nintendo World Report. |

On a whim I bought Little King's Story when I was at Target yesterday, but I haven't cracked the shrink wrap yet. Spoiler: click to toggle Anyways, with price cuts on both the XBox 360 and PS3, rumours of a Wii price drop are now running rampant. Lowering the price would be a preemptive move. Both Sony and Microsoft just lowered the price of their respective systems and there's no doubt they are going to sell out this coming holiday season, which COULD potentially take sales away from the Wii. If Nintendo cuts their price too, they can cancel out any effect the price cuts of their competitors will have, thereby ensuring success in the upcoming holiday season as well as into 2010. I'm still not convinced they're going to do it; whenever the competition does something, the media always tries to pressure Nintendo into doing it too (you'd be surprised how many outlets predicted Nintendo would have released an HD Wii by now). But if there is a price cut, I think it would be $20 or $30. And I don't think there will be any new hardware bundles like some are saying. |

The Wii games line-up is much better this year than last. Dead Space Extraction and Resident Evil Darkside Chronicles will both be getting some love from me relatively close to their release date. I can't say I give a sh*t about Wii Fit Plus or Mario and Sonic at the Winter Olympics but they will no doubt sell well. New Super Mario Bros Wii looks interesting... not sure whether I'll buy it at release though. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare may be two years late on Wii but it maybe lessens the pain of not getting Modern Warfare 2 at the same time as the other consoles, and if there's anyone who wants a good Wii FPS this should be of real interest. Silent Hill looks nice... I'll wait and see what the reviews say but I already like it because the first character you meet is the voiceover guy from Crackdown. And the new Tales of Symphonia game could/would/should be good.

I wouldn't be so confident about Nintendo's success, honestly. Sure they'll have a successful holiday if they lowered the Wii's price... but I'd actually doubt their dominance would be so "in the bag" as you imply. Isn't it possible that the Wii might've come close to its saturation point in the consumer world by now?? I mean... sure, there must be a population out there that were always interested but never purchased/received a Wii yet... but I'd think that those people would be the minority by now. In fact, I might even hazard a guess that a Wii price cut might be successful in getting more people ("core" as well as "casual") to RE-purchase a Wii, simply because they might've sold their first one by now, and news of Wii Fit Plus or Mario Galaxy 2 or Dead Space: Extraction (ZOMG I heart) have gotten them re-interested in the Wii. But even still... at this point, HDTVs are becoming closer to the norm... and will only become more so until the next big hullaballoo comes along... which would obviously lure the potential console-owner to the HD-er/bluray-ier consoles... Just some thoughts from your neighborhood fatness.

I just got Excite Truck today, and after a half-hour of play time, my first impression is... Good mop, the soundtrack is simply AWFUL. Does anyone have any recommendations on what to listen to when playing it?I'm surprised to hear you say that considering how many GameCube re-releases there have been this year. I don't agree either, since last year had Mario Kart Wii. There have been some good games released though, and some still to come. Two games released this year I'm still looking to get are ExciteBots and Punch-Out!!. There are also some lessor-known titles which look interesting, like Rune Factory Frontier, which has been described as a cross between Harvest Moon and a dungeon-crawler, and Dawn of Discovery, which reminds me of old computer simulation games like Civilization. I'll probably get New Super Mario Brothers Wii. I liked the one on the DS, and kind of miss it, plus the co-op looks really fun. I don't know, I think that game is a lose-lose situation. If it sells well, it will send the message that Wii-owners will buy any old game that gets ported, and are expected to be THANKFUL for it. If it sells poorly, it will send the message that shooters don't sell on Wii, despite hoe well the previous Call of Duty games sold. Really I don't understand why they couldn't have just released Modern Warfare 2 instead. It is a shooter which doesn't have a continued story so nobody would care about not getting the first game. The Wii can't play catch-up by going at a SLOWER pace than other systems... Third-excuse makers just don't learn anything when it comes to the Wii... Of course it is possible, but then I look at continued sales of the DS, and the Wii is following a very similar trend, and I think this parallel will continue for many years to come. But it looks like the price cut may be coming, because a leaked Toys 'R Us ad shows it with a price of $199.99. The Wii proves that currently the average consumer does not care about HD. That isn't going to shift overnight, and probably not in the next few years either. Right now it is largely a buzz-word, most people don't even know what it is and some can't even tell the difference between HD channels and non-HD channels (I've seen this first-hand). The only reason why so many people have HD now is because it is being pushed as the new standard and you can't really buy a new television which doesn't have it. Besides, Nintendo didn't go the HD route because it would create higher development costs. They'll release an HD system, which could be a Wii HD or a Wii Too, whenever the cost no longer presents a problem. |

Whoops! My bad, I actually meant their end of year line-up, that's why I listed pretty the games yet to be released this year. Last year's xmas line-up was pretty slim; Animal Crossing and something else I've forgotten. Anyway, this year's xmas line-up is a much more diverse range of titles.
I can explain. The Call of Duty series was originally created by Infinity Ward but Activision call upon other developers to make the games as well. Basically, all the exceptionally good Call of Duty games are made by Infinity Ward (the original, CoD2, Cod4 and this years CoD Modern Warfare 2), the rest are mainly made by Treyarch. Treyarch develop for every platform, so their games (Cod3 and CoD: World at War for example) usually end up on 360/PS3/Wii/DS/PSP/iPhone/PS2... etc, etc. Infinity Ward, on the other hand, have no interest in developing for the Wii, PS2, or handheld platforms. They've never made any "excuse", they just don't see them as a viable platforms for what they want to do. The version of CoD4 that Wii will get is being ported by another developer... but still, it's not "any old game", it's one of the best games ever. I can't see that as a bad thing unless the port is badly done. I already know that the Nintendo faithful will moan about this... "another brown generic shooter", which is so far from the truth that those people should be forced to play it and then made to eat their consoles. Of course, if it was dayglo and had Mario in it then the reception would be entirely different, but it's not those kind of games that the Wii lacks. No, it proves that HD isn't absolutely essential for everything that's watched on a TV (or HDTV) and DVD sales tell us this much more effectively than Wii sales... but that doesn't automatically mean people don't care. According to VG Chartz, 53 million Wii's, 31 million 360's and 24 million PS3's have been sold, and those 55 million HD consoles is marginally more than the 53 million Wii consoles that don't support HD. What does that tell us? In truth, not much, but it makes it easy to counter your assumption about what does or doesn't matter to the "average consumer". Also, since the Wii is marketed as a family friendly console, there's a lot of younger Wii fans who don't have the opportunity or income to buy a HDTV. Do they care? I dunno, but since they have no income I don't think they represent the "average consumer" either... If we really mean to talk about the "consumer" in that instance we need to ask if the people with the money (mummy or daddy) care that junior's game isn't in HD? Floorcat makes some very valid points about the Wii; most people I know who bought one have now sold it. Wii still has a lot to do to prove it's a valid console for those people who want more than just Nintendo games. It might still have it's waggle, but the Wii's buzz now seems to be waning.

The other two games from Nintendo were Wii Music and Wario Land: Shake It!. I'm not surprised you're not interested in Wii Music, but if you liked the Game Boy Wario Land games then Wario Land Shake it! seems like a safe bet. The games are handled by different developers? That seems kind of strange. But if Activision is calling the shots then can't they find someone to port Modern Warfare 2 to the Wii? With it being an actually new game I'd think it would generate more interest, plus it's going to seem weird to receive the original game when they're hyping up the sequel so much. And I just know it will be two more years before Modern Warfare 2 comes to Wii. Who is ever thankful for sloppy seconds? Publishers need to stop treating the Wii like it is some sort of starving child. I'll be thankful once third-parties realize that the Wii isn't going anywhere and they start giving it their best efforts. Still waiting... I don't know who you hang around with but I've not seen that complaint from real Nintendo fans. Most of them are complaining that it is a two-year-old game and we should be getting the sequel instead, and these are people who probably WILL end up buying the game. I've tried to eat a PlayStation before but I've accepted the fact that it's just too bulky. That seems like a pretty flimsy excuse if you ask me. The ONLY thing the Wii isn't capable of is pretty HD-visuals, and if that's the only ambition that a developer has then they're pretty shallow. You're going to have to post proof of this. Last I heard the Wii demographic was older than the XBox 360 and PS3 demographic, though I've never actually seen any studies about it. What it is being marketed toward is not proof of who's buying it. Also, who's buying all of those DVDs then? Are they all being purchased by parents for their kids or by people who have a tiny little television? I highly doubt HD is much of a factor when someone decides which console to buy. It's about the games. People who want games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit are going to buy a Wii because those types of games aren't available on the XBox 360 and PS3 and never will be. People who want shooters get an XBox 360. People who want... whatever the PS3's exclusive games are get a PS3. With the prices lowered and less of a gap between the three, we will soon see what it is which sells systems. If the trends of history are indication though, there has never been a shift in the market leader of any console generation, and the Wii will continue along its parallel of the DS and PS2 and become the best-selling console of all time. |

Wii will continue to lead, third party publishers will continue to ignore it, those who have chose the Wii as their only console will continue to feel hard done by because only a small number of developers will make anything other than shovelware for it. I think you do genuinely believe that, Mop_it_up but I also think you're quite wrong; the PS3/360 do far more than just nice graphics. But since we disagree maybe we should see what other people who have had a chance to play the Wii and either the PS3 or 360 think? |

And their profit margins will continue to decrease, more companies will go bankrupt, and they'll cause the industry to come crashing down around them. It's their loss more than anyone else's. I played Resident Evil 5 with my brother last weekend and besides the graphics it didn't seem like anything which couldn't be done on the Wii. It sounds to me like you have some games in mind which wouldn't work on Wii; what are they, and why couldn't they be done if a developer actually gave it their best effort? |

RE5 I think could work on Wii with a graphical downgrade. Amongst the games I think couldn't work are Fallout 3 and Left 4 Dead. They could be ported but so much would be lost that we'd end up with a Dead Rising Wii style downgrade that totally loses the spirit of the game. Left 4 Dead throws waves of zombies at you that the Wii just couldn't handle without an engine change and graphical rewrite; it would look like sh*t and wouldn't have the same effect: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4eyDBgy0fCA Fallout is about the believability of the world; I can see places and enemies on the horizon, head towards that speck and get bump into god knows what along the way. I've not seen anything on Wii that attempts this kind of scale. It's kinda hard to explain unless you've seen the game in action. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xnsdkdVPmYE |

I'll kick some ass if they dont.

but they will no doubt sell well. New Super Mario Bros Wii looks interesting... not sure whether I'll buy it at release though.
