Reminder: the last time the industry crashed was due to endless bad games being released for the most popular console. Sound familiar? |

Lots of moving objects and expansive environments are one thing I wonder about; a lot of the processing power of the XBox 360 and PS3 goes into the graphics. Battalion Wars II has a lot happening onscreen at one time, not as much as Left 4 Dead of course, but still, the game handles it with a smooth framerate so I wonder if it could be pushed even further. Expansive environments requires a lot of RAM, and even with lessor graphics I'm not sure if the Wii has enough for that. I'm not sure if compression techniques could work for that either, since that would create some nasty load times. I'm not a developer though, and so I don't really know of what the Wii is capable. Still, games like Super Mario Galaxy lead me to believe that no game has tapped into the full potential of Wii. I wonder that, with a little bit of clever programming, such things like expansive environments and tons of moving objects could be done. I guess we just have to hope that some developer will be ambitious enough to push it. Unfortunately, sometimes it seems like some developers see the specs of the Wii and write it off as not being good enough without actually trying to create something for it. I can understand this, because it is easier to go with a system you KNOW could handle your game, or through less effort, but still... did they actually TRY to test what the Wii can do before passing on it? It's a complicated issue no less, and I'm still not sure what I want to believe... Yeah, that sounds like the PS2, and yet that was the best-selling console before the Wii. I think the crash of the 80's was caused by several factors, including that there were a ton of systems released which were all basically the same. The pending crash would be because quite a few companies have ever-increasing development costs with diminishing returns. I don't really think it is going to happen, but considering how people are always saying such-and-such means the Wii is doomed I thought it would be fun to reverse it. |

Ack! I went to play Little King's Story today and... it didn't work! The Wii makes a lot of noise when trying to read the disc, and then it returns an error message which says "An error has occurred". I checked GameFAQs and other people have had the same problem, and apparently the publisher is aware that some copies are defective. Now I just need to decide if I'm going to return it to the store or contact the manufacturer (the store had only one copy when I was there). What's kind of an eerie omen is that, according to GameFAQs, this is my 666th game. I knew that couldn't be a good sign... I guess it is just a coincidence though, right? Maybe I should do some sort of cleansing ritual, just to play it safe and rid myself of any possible evil. Or rather, to help ensure that the replacement will work, since some people had to send it back multiple times before getting a working copy. In any case, Floorcat and Alxbly, if you haven't already tried playing your copy of the game then I'd recommend trying it and making sure it works. |

It seems alright but I'e not played much so far (literally just the first 10 minutes). It's kind of a cross between Pikmin and Harvest Moon... not a bad combination.

I haven't purchased a retail Wii game since Punch Out in June, and before that, Brawl ALL the way back in March 2008. Though I really wanna pick up Little King's Story when I can. Probably on the only Wii game I'll get until New Super Mario Bros. Wii. Wiiware though is looking pretty good, need to get some Wii points (well Nintendo points) |

I don't see what's so terrible about that. It sounds like they still got their job done and just played during their downtime. I'm not saying they should have done it, but it's nothing to cause an uproar over. Anyways, I returned Little King's Story to the store last weekend. They didn't have any others though so I had to get a refund. So I bought Rune Factory Frontier instead, which has been described as Harvest Moon with a sword. I'll let you know if that game is any good after I've played it.Turns out maybe it was a good thing it didn't work because GameStop just put the game on sale for $30, so I stopped in there that day to see if they had the game. The guy said that I was the first person to buy the game ever since they received it. Though not so surprising that a game like this isn't such a hot seller, it is still kind of disappointing to hear that nobody has bought the game from that store. I guess that must be why they are having the sale, to clear out their inventory. With this being a copy from the first batch that GameStop received, I put it in my system expecting to get an error message. Luckily, this one appears to work. To celebrate... I played Mario Kart Wii. Played quite a bit of it so far. It's kind of slow in the beginning, but it gets much better as you gain the ability to travel with more units and have more job types. I also like how each citizen has their own unique name and appearance, it makes them feel like more than just tools. The basic battle strategy is to send your units in to attack and then retreat them back to you before the enemy launches an attack. When an enemy is about to attack, little puffs of white smoke will appear above its head. Enemies with multiple attacks may have other tells about them, so observe them carefully. Before battling bosses, it is a good idea to hang back and study them to see what kind of moves are in their repertoire. The only real problem with the game is unfortunately not a small one: the controls. I have no idea why this game doesn't have pointer controls, but it doesn't, which makes targeting enemies and objects more difficult than it should be. With the limited amount of commands it isn't as much of a problem as it could be, but it's still a pretty glaring omission. The controls aren't enough to detract from the game though. Although the story is kind of weak, the characters are quirky and entertaining nonetheless. One thing I wonder about is why they designed it with such a Fisher-Price visual style? Both the title and box art would probably turn off potential buyers if they were just seeing this randomly in a store. As it is, there seems to be a disparity between the relatively complex gameplay and the presentation. Don't get me wrong, I love the storybook-style mixed with somewhat mature themes, but it doesn't make a good first impression and is likely one reason why it hasn't been selling well. It's a shame really, because it is shaping up to be one of the best games on the Wii. |

The game is unashamedly cutesy and twee... I'm 32 now so playing games like this makes me slightly uncomfortable. Not because "I'm too grown up" (the angsty teen in me is long gone, thank f***) but because when you get to a my age an interest in childrens things can seem slightly sinister...

Well, the game is rated "T" so it is intended for people 13 and up. I'd think little kids would get bored of the game quickly, if they even grasped it in the first place. Though I know where you're coming from, I used to be that way myself. But then I started thinking, why am I bothered? Why should I feel uncomfortable playing such games especially when there's no one else around when I do so? Why should I care what anyone else thinks of my interests? "Childish" should not be a negative term and "adult" or "mature" should not be a seal of approval. The desire to grow up or to be an adult is something that only a child should possess, it's a part of the maturing process after all. But one who actually IS an adult shouldn't be concerned of such things. So, there's nothing wrong with having an interest in "childish" things at any age. If you feel that there is, then I kind of hate to tell you this, but you need to grow up.

Yeah, I agree, although I think there are extremes on both sides which don't fit within that context. If that were true then perhaps Michael Jackson would have had more acceptance during his life. In truth, people can form their own opinions on this and for me personally, there is a level beyond which I feel uncomfortable. I think you probably misunderstand where I'm coming from, probably because you're a lot younger than me. I'm at a stage in my own life where I don't have a desire to "grow up" or to be "grown up" and that's why playing most games doesn't bother me; from GTA's to Animal Crossing or Kirby 64, I couldn't care less whether the game is "grown up" or not. If it plays well then I'm usually interested. But there's boundaries to that. I wouldn't feel right playing a baby's game and that's what Little King's Story feels like sometimes. It crosses my own personal boundaries. I'm being honest and open here; this isn't a dig at Nintendo, or you, or anyone who plays and enjoys this game. It just makes me, personally, a little uncomfortable when I play it sometimes.

I said interest in childish things, not interest in a child. For one thing, there were several other things wrong with Micheal Jackson besides an unnatural interest in children, but let's not get sidetracked here. I wasn't sure what you meant about it feeling "sinister" but now I think I do. Of course there's something wrong with somebody who is ONLY interested in childish things, but clearly YOU aren't. One look at your XBox 360 collection will show this. It isn't like you're going to quit your job and become a full-time ice cream truck driver. Do you know how many Disney movie collectors there are out there? What about the extreme opposite of childish? Do you ever feel sinister when playing the morally questionable Grand Theft Auto or over-the-top violent games like MadWorld and House of the Dead? If the extreme on one end makes you uncomfortable then why doesn't the extreme on the other end ever cause problems? What's the difference? How far into the game did you play? Like I said, the game doesn't make a good first impression to anyone with even a slight aversion to childish things. The five people who recommended me this game are ages 25, 26, 29, 30, and 666 (okay, so that last one might be false). This isn't Elmo's Number Journey, it is rated "T" for a reason. How many baby's games do you know of have polygamy in them? Or a fat drunkard who vomits on you for an attack? As far as the visual style, to me it doesn't really seem different than Animal Crossing or Kirby games. Can you describe exactly what aspect makes you uncomfortable? I'm sorry if it seems like I'm prying here, but I'm the one who recommended you this game so if you don't play it then I feel bad. |

Don't worry, it's not gonna make me stop playing the game but I do agree the beginning is a bit OTT with the fairtytale stuff. It won't put me off though, because I've enjoyed other aspects of the game too much for that (the music especially).
It does, but not with the games you've mentioned. I kind of think of games a bit like cartoons; the violence is often very much over the top and for that reason I can accept it. But there are some exceptions which I think are sinister; rape games for example (a topic we covered recently) push that boundary because of the mental torture and the sheer horrific nature of it. Likewise, if a game was just too graphic or revelled in unwarranted torture or something equally nasty then I don't think I would play it. Hate games are another subject we covered here a while ago and I can't say I ever want to play a game made with racial hatred in mind, such as this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ethnic_Cleansing_%28video_game%29 That's pushing the boundaries too far. Another thing I'm glad isn't in many games is killing children. That sounds silly since they would only be "virtual" children but, again, it feels like it's a step too far.
I'm not trying to say it is a baby's game, but rather that the subject matter within somehow makes me feel vagely uneasy sometimes. I dunno... it's hard to explain. |

Yes the graphics will be worse since the wii is less powerful. But honestly who cares about graphics? Its all gameplay and the story that makes a game good. Thats why most retro games have lived on and fans are still playing them today. They dont have good graphics compared to recent consoles or even the ps2, if you find a game fun then buy it on the console you like the most. |

The graphics have been cut back a fair bit (some of the enemy corpses are 2D, if the early screens are anything to go by). But the more important factor will be how well the controls work. |

I imagine it is something that's tough to explain, especially to somebody who doesn't have that problem. But I hope you stick with it, because it really is a good game. I just completed Little King’s Story the other day. I don’t know how far you have gotten into it so I won’t say much, except that I found the story to be rather weak and the ending was disappointing. It was a good concept, and I love the art style, especially the cutscenes, but it just isn’t very well thought-out or expressed. It could have been better if they had fleshed it out and tried to implement it into the gameplay more. I’ve been playing a bit of Rune Factory Frontier here and there as well, despite that it is kind of stereotypical with the whole “impress the girls” aspect. Then again, the main character is kind of a hunk so I could see why the girls go crazy over him. Plus he is just about the only eligible bachelor in town so it isn’t like they have options. Anyways, it isn’t the type of game I could play for hours on end, as each game day isn’t too dissimilar from day to day. But it is good to pop in for a bit each day and see how things are going, and it will last me for a while. I think that is debatable. The important factor for me would be whether the graphics are the only thing which have been scaled back. If the game is missing significant features or has had the environments resized to become smaller, then it doesn't matter how well the controls work. The game itself still needs to be good. I think he was comparing the Wii to the GameCube, which can have slightly better graphics (See: Mario Galaxy) and has online play. |

From my experience, Nintendo is essentially one generation behind when it comes to online and online social gaming. As must be the case with many others that don't fit in the "casual-only" crowd, when I play the Wii, I'm playing alone. Like, I might as well be off in my own bubble of legacy gaming, playing the PS2 or N64. Coordinating anything online, EVEN WITH POST-FRIEND-CODED FRIENDS, is a huge pain in comparison to the 360/PS3. Which is fine for me... as there basically aren't many Wii games that have an online component that would draw me in anyway. At least not enough to bear with the ridiculous monkey-dance they require to actually play with your friends online. So no loss. And no loss big enough to discourage so many folk from modding their Wiis, apparently. I'd be shocked if there weren't more modded Wiis (by at least a multiple of a THOUSAND) than any other current-gen console. And call me crazy, but it seems such deficiencies might even result in any/all Wii-only "core" owners being all super pissy about everything, whether sub-conscious or not. "3rd party developers aren't supporting the Wii", "Wii games are never fairly reviewed", "Nintendo isn't giving 3rd party devs a chance", "Nintendo is totally not supporting the core audiences". YES, I'm over-generalizing, but seriously... the highest number of disgruntled current-gen gamers must reside in the "I only own a Wii" population. And what do I think of that? I say not a problem to me. Wii gamers are the biggest bunch of whining hypocrites on the planet (something I've strongly believed since MadWorld & Deadly Creatures was released), but I don't care. I'm happy with the Wii and don't have hardly any problem with the game industry side of Nintendo's consoles. I have my Dead Space: Extraction. Any subsequent sequels probably won't be on the Wii, but chances are, I'll have the console(s) they're released on.

From what I've read on tinternetz, you're pretty much spot on. But before I discuss that:"Limited Edition Black Wii bundle announced for Europe, including Wii Sports Resort and Wii MotionPlus 20 October 2009 – The Wii console is about to get an exciting new look as it launches across Europe in sleek black. The black Wii will be available to buy in UK and Republic of Ireland from 6 November and mainland Europe on 20 November, and will come as a “Limited Edition” bundled with a Wii Remote, Wii MotionPlus and Nunchuk – all in black – as well as the exhilarating new Wii Sports Resort game and the original Wii Sports. The Wii Sports Resort black bundle will offer a total of 15 different sports and activities to enjoy. Also launching in Europe as part of the black range of accessories will be the new black Classic Controller Pro – an enhanced version of the Classic Controller. Additional black Wii Remote controllers, Wii MotionPlus accessories and Nunchuk controllers will also be available to purchase separately across Europe from November 20 onwards. Wii Sports Resort, which is bundled with the new black Wii, has already sold well over one million copies across Europe, and brings an entire island, along with 12 exciting sports and activities, to your living room for all your friends and family to enjoy. Each of the sports featured in Wii Sports Resort is modelled with incredible accuracy thanks to the Wii MotionPlus accessory, included with this new package. If black is your colour then prepare to get your hands on this popular console and accessories in their new look, launching across UK and Republic of Ireland from 6 November and mainland Europe on 20 November". http://www.nintendo.co.uk/NOE/en_GB/news/2009/limited_edition_black_wii_bundle_announced_for_europe_including_wii_sports_resort_and_wii_motionplus_14833.html F***in' ace! Looks like I know what i'm getting for xmas! But, back to aggrieved Wii fans. Yes, they're here so that others can have lolz.
Ditto. At first I felt disppointed with the games, but the other consoles offer more than enough to keep me going. Nintendo still churn out the occasional good game so I can't see me ever wanting to sell my Wii. Well, maybe I'll sell my white Wii...

I was just coming here to tell you about that alxbly! Oh well...That's because they want to offer it for free without breaking the bank. Now, ideally, they could also offer a paid service with better features, but I guess they didn't think it'd be worth it. Maybe next time around. Considering there are about double as many Wiis as the other systems then statistics would say you are right. That might be simply because the Wii-only population outnumbers the other single-console owners. Though from my experience there is an equal number of whiners on all sides. People like to complain and use the Internet as a dumping ground for their criticisms. This is the only one of those statements that's a fact, if it were started with the words "the majority". However, the reason behind it is mostly conjecture. |

Seems that conjecture is occasionally backed up with hard sales figures. Extraction is the latest in a long line of third party Wii titles to under-perform (see the Dead Space topic), joining other good but commercially ignored titles such as The Conduit, MadWorld, House of the Dead Overkill, etc, etc. Gotta love the fans who moan, scream and sulk that they'd do anything for a decent third party game... except buy it, obviously. |

That is proof of nothing. The Conduit, MadWorld, and House of the Dead Overkill probably would have sold worse on other systems. Show me a game equivalent to Halo 3, GTA 4, God of War, Metal Gear Solid 4, etc. on Wii that sold poorly and then you might have a point. |

Exactly my point. Third-party claims of their games aren't selling are complete and utter nonsense. People can't buy what doesn't get released. How can you not believe that third-parties are biased against Wii and refuse to create games for it? The evidence is right there. Let's look at the top-selling third-party titles on all three systems. Wii 1. Mario and Sonic @ Olympics - 7 million 2. Guitar Hero III - 4.5 million 3. Carnival Games- 3,5 million 4. Guitar Hero: World Tour 3.5 million 5. LEGO Star Wars - 3 million 6. Game Party - 2 million 7. Sonic and the Secret Rings. - 2 million 8. Deca Sports - 2 million 9. EA Active - 2 million 10. Rayman Raving Rabbids 2 - 1.5 million 360 1. CoD 4 - 8 million 2. GTA IV - 7 million 3. CoD: Waw- 6 million 4. Assassin's Creed - 4.5 million 5. Guitar Hero III - 4.5 million 6. Lego Indiana Jones - 3.5 million 7. Kung Fu Panda (WTF) - 3 million 8. Elder Scrolls 4 - 3 million 9. Fallout 3 - 2.5 million 10. Guitar Hero II - 2.5 million PS3 1. GTA IV - 5.5 million 2. CoD 4 - 4.5 million 3. MGS4 - 4 million 4. CoD: WaW - 3.5 million 5. Assassin's Creed - 3.5 million 6. Resident Evil 5 - 2.5 million 7. FIFA Soccer 09 - 2.3 million 8. Pro Evolution Soccer 09 - 2 million 9. Guitar Hero III - 2 million 10. Pro Evolution Soccer 08 - 1.5 million As you can clearly see, Wii gets the short end of the budget, effort, and marketing pool. Most of the top third party Wii games are discounted mini game collections released in mid to late 2007. When you combine this list with the Wii's top sellers, it's no wonder 3rd parties' crappy games can't sell on the Wii, and why people get upset that Wii owners are stereotyped as "casuals." They totally read the Wii's audience wrong and thought they'd like repeated minigame collections or knockoffs of games that either come free with the Wii or Nintendo obviously does better like Wii Fit. And even with all this awful budget crap, somehow these games sales are at least somewhat competitive with the other system's numbers and combined with Nintendo's games numbers, Wii owners have actually bought more games. It's simply mindboggling that they keep abusing the Wii. And notice, not one of the Wii's top games (Nintendo included) is anything third parties ostensibly aimed at "Wii's Demographic." Guitar Hero III sold just as well on the 360; World Tour sold even better. You know why? Because these games were actually the developer's best efforts. Look at that! Good games that are real, mainline releases and not some half-baked spin-off actually sell on Wii? Madness! So no, third parties haven't really given the Wii a fair shake. So what's the explanation for their continued reliance on completely disproven stereotypes and theories? Does it make business sense to made an awful low-budget game for the Wii when they don't sell anymore and never really sell in the first place? No. Are Wii owners the most casual of casuals? No, not according to their recorded buying habits, the only "casual" games that do well are ones that apparently come with hardware, and they haven't bought much of any of the third party knockoffs, at least none more than games like Smash Brothers, Mario, or Zelda. What other theory is left? The funny part is third party hatred of platform companies isn't anything new. Electronic Arts was notorious for their complete hatred of Sega in the later Saturn and early DreamCast years. Victor Ireland of the defunct Working Designs said the DS was like a "stillborn." Since it does exist, why is the notion that third parties have largely taken a set against the Wii a "fringe theory?" It doesn't have to be a rational behavior for it to be the truth. And it's not an explanation I reached first, but there's no other apparent explanation other than total stupidity. |

Take out Guitar Hero and what have we got left? Are you sure these games aren't Wii demographic? Mario and Sonic? Carnival Games? Game Party? Are you sure these "best efforts" and not cash-in's or spin offs? Or are you just applying that logic to Guitar Hero?Back to established multiplatform titles that released on Wii. Let's look at Call of Duty: World at War. 6m copies on 360, 3.5m on PS3. Where does it factor on the Wii list? That's as close to a GTA IV as it seems you're gonna get. By the way, congrats on being the second person ever to make it into my sig.

Any subsequent sequels probably won't be on the Wii, but chances are, I'll have the console(s) they're released on.
