N64 collection completed 7/29/12
I have an original model, so my disc drive still works for things like backups, compilations, and roms. However, my hard drive no longer works. I backed up all of my games (legitimate games I loaned out. I'm not THAT lazy) onto a 300GB hard drive that worked perfectly until one day it froze while ripping a disc. Then I had to reformat the hard drive. I converted it to FAT32 so my laptop would read, then used a program to format it back to NTFS. Now the Wii can read it again, but the thing crashes when it tries to mount the hard drive. I know it can't be the drive because I have four external hard drives I took from my desktop (long story), and I even tried a new pair of SATA cables and IDE strips to connect it to the back of the Wii (as they always say, "The one closest to the edge").

tl;dr Is there a better program I can use to put games onto the hard drives? Next I'm going to try using WBFS Manager 3.0 on my laptop rather than an app on the HBC.

I wouldn't worry about the Wii getting bricked. I've had the HBC for about a year now, and there's no problem at all. Nintendo will probably stop releasing updates soon, with the Wii HD/ Wii 2 on the way.

i have a red wii updated to 4.3, used the SSBB trick to getit soft-modded and worked perfectly. its so easy. im using CFG USB Loader to dump disk and Wii Backup Manager 0.3.7 to transfer games to my fat32 hdd. you dont even have to worry about bricking your wii. as long as they dont go to HBC, it will never brick. mine is for family use and so far so good its working A1.

I guess I'm getting a reputation as a person who can fix video game consoles because the other day my neighbor Kurt asked me to fix his Wii. He said that the disc reader was making a terrible grinding noise when a game is inserted but that the discs don't seem to be scratched or damaged in any way.

After checking out a few videos on Youtube I had somewhat of an idea what the problem was and I set about fixing it. Man... the Wii sure is a pain in the arse to disassemble. Once open, though, I saw what the problem was and fixed it by slightly bending the metal assembly that presses the disc down on to the spindle. It took several attempts to get it just right and when I was done I lubed it with a little ceramic grease for good measure- all seems to be well now. I'm sure Kurt is going to be very pleased when he comes back to pick up his console.

Oh, the common wisdom seems to be that this problem occurs if a disc is left in the Wii when the system isn't in use. I do that all the time although I'm probably going to start ejecting my games now as a preventative measure.

Thanks for the warning! I play all my games from a HDD, so I tend to leave the last game I ripped to it in the drive until I get another game, Must... learn to stop being lazy

There was talk among the Nintendonista that we'd eventually see a Mario first person shooter on the Wii (or now the Wii U) titled Mario Paintball but after the events of Sandy Hook, Connecticut there's no way that's ever gonna happen. :(

Not even Paintball? That seems like a perfect Mario-series game.
I currently own humble, but nice collections of NTSC-U; NES, SNES, N64, GameCube, Wii

Currently taking a break from a 2012 collecting binge.

makes you wonder though... was it ditched by a burglar on the run? Thrown out by a disgruntled spouse?
Or dumped by a disappointed kid who made it very clear to Santa that he really really wanted a Wii U and NOT a Wii?

Yeah, I love the Wii because I can play my GameCube titles like F-Zero GX on it and the 480p upgrade to N64 Virtual Console games is a nice bonus.

BTW, here's a list of my Virtual Console games from the N64 era:

1) Mario Kart 64
2) Wave Race 64
3) F-Zero X
4) Super Smash Bros.

I ordered 2 Wii Minis on Amazon today. One is likely going to replace my our Wii which is in rather rough shape (its the family's system) & pretty old and the other one I'm just going to keep sealed. I actually really like the design and simplicity of it, it reminds me of Nintendo's older consoles. The matching red nunchuck and controller are sharp too. I don't care about the GameCube support or online support since I still use my good old GameCube for GC games and I never go online anyway.

#@&%! I just realized that there will be no way for me to transfer my saves onto this system because there's no SD card slot and you can't do it via USB...derp. Trying to cancel the order >_< . If I can't I will just hold onto them and try to make the money back in the future. But I still need to buy my own Wii sometime since the one I currently use is technically my family's.

I also heard that the Wii Mini doesn't support progressive scan even if you use component cables. <_<

Yay, I was able to cancel it. Really the lack of memory card slot was the only deal killer for me. I'll probably just buy a regular Wii this Black Friday.

Reports of the Wii's death are greatly exaggerated
Many people here in the US are claiming that the original Wii is dead but that's just ridiculous. Thanks to Super Smash Bros. Brawl alone the Wii will be in demand for years to come around most college campuses. The console is just so versatile (if you get a backwards compatible one) as it allows you to play classic video games from several generations. Personally, I love the fact that thanks to the Virtual Console service I can play the four best Mario Karts on the humble Nintendo Wii. The newest iteration even has a fantastic on-line mode that's free. :yeah:

Oh, don't worry if your Wii looks crappy on your HDTV because you can order component cables for it from Monoprice for less than six bucks counting shipping. :o

Wii Component Cables

You won't get true HD with them but you will be able to enjoy even your N64 era VC games in progressive scan. :w00t:

I have to admit that I'm surprised there are still a handful of Wii releases coming out this year. New Skylanders, Disney Infinity, new FIFA, Angry Birds Trilogy, new Just Dance and Zumba games, just to name a few. Even the release of Pandora's Tower in April shocked me. My store hasn't seen a new Wii game since last year but I'm sure a few of the aforementioned games will hit our shelves.

Hey Red, how much of a discount do you get at your store on video games?

On Topic: The N64 remained viable for many years after Nintendo stopped manufacturing it thanks to multiplayer classics like Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros. and the Mario Party games. Looks like the same thing will probably happen with the Wii thanks to it's relatively low price on the used market, and its epic local multiplayer titles like Brawl, Mario Kart Wii and Goldeneye 007. Of course you also have access to the Wii's AWESOME Virtual Console library which includes such multiplayer masterpieces as Mario Golf and Mario Tennis which many people never got a chance to enjoy for various reasons.

Oh, if you're a Club Nintendo member you can get the Virtual Console version of Star Fox 64 for just 200 points this month. :gift:

10% discount. Not much, really, but it does save me $6 on every brand new $60 PS3/360 game I buy. That covers the sales tax, pretty much. I'm good with that. :yeah:

remember ps2 games were just being pulled like a year and half ago, so it's no surprized that Wii games are still being made.

I only say that because Nintendo has always been a little notorious for cutting off the previous console when their new stuff arrives. Not nearly as bad as Microsoft abandoned the Xbox when the 360 came out but pretty close. I was working in retail for the switch from GameCube to Wii and was almost there for the N64's end and noticed that we rarely got anything new for the previous Nintendo consoles once the new ones came out. Sony supports their old systems for a lot longer than the other guys. For example, FIFA '14 is coming out on the PS2 and the PSP as well as all the current and next gen consoles (except, oddly enough, the Wii U...its even coming out for the Wii!). First time in history a game is coming to three of one company's systems at the same time.

Here in the States the Wii represent a tremendous value for anyone who's thought about getting in to semi-modern video gaming. Sure, retro is a blast but many newer titles like Muramasa: The Demon Blade are worth experiencing too.

Although the Wii is universally revered as a multiplayer console many people aren't aware of its single-player gems like Muramasa and for that reason I'm posting this video review.

With all the WiiU and Xbox One trials and tribulations, I wanted to give an unlikely plug to the Wii. As I try my best to be a family man first, I have so little time to game on my own. But lately, my daughter (4.5/yrs) has been asking to play Wii with me (and to a lesser extent her twin brother), and it has been a real joy. It is great fun playing Wii Sports Baseball (with the motion controls) or Wii Resort Archery or Ping Pong or Bowling. Very simple games but the objective of activity emersion is achieved. And her baseball swing is coming along great :P . And of course, Mario Kart Wii is a favorite of the entire family. Of, and my kids love Guitar Hero so much so that my boy got a FauxHawk at the start of the Summer to be like "Mowauk Guy" :D

I realize this is how very few of us game by choice, but for group / family activities, maybe Nintendo did some real good with the Wii.

Essentially ignoring online for many games, Nintendo did focus on family and friend based games for the Wii. I played so much multiplayer on the Wii, the only console to rival the number of hours played with friends is the N64. Games like Super Smash, Wii Sports, Mario Kart, Mario Party, New Super Mario Bros, Kirby's Return to Dreamland, and Wii Party consumed so many hours at my house.

I think it's great that getting some great bonding time with your kids BDR. I'm awaiting the day my lil one really grasps the concept of gaming. Although she's a wonder on the iPad ^_^

It's funny you should bring up the Wii though what with all the love for the newer consoles out or soon to be released. I use my Wii a lot. Pandoras Tower (get this BDR, I think you'd like it), The Last Story, Xenoblade Chronicles, Newer Super Mario Bros (fan made New Super Mario Bros hack). And that's just a handful of a great selection of games.

I personally think the Wii is a great console with some really solid titles that are often overlooked. It's also now the time to buy Wii stuff as most are selling em off. I not long picked up a Wii console with hook up's, two remotes, one with motion plus, one nunchuk and Wii Sports Resort in the drive for £20 :)

I was working in retail for the switch from GameCube to Wii and was almost there for the N64's end and noticed that we rarely got anything new for the previous Nintendo consoles once the new ones came out.
The reason that happened with the Nintendo 64 and GameCube is because they were not popular systems and did not sell well compared to the competition, especially towards the end of the generation. They were dropped so quickly because no one was buying them and stores wanted their shelf space to feature products that sell. The N64 and GCN were the exception, not the rule; the NES was still in stores for at least 4 years after the Super NES came out (and in Japan it was manufactured until 2003!), and the Super NES was around for at least 3 years after the N64 came out. On the handheld front, the DS is still in stores and selling well over two years after the 3DS has come out, and the GBA was still sold for years after the DS was out as well. So, I think we can expect the Wii to be around for a while longer since it was the best-selling system of its generation.

I really embraced the Wii.....clocked up yet more time on Mario Kart Wii last night - and it's online presence is STILL going strong after all these years.

Have loads of games for it and downloaded a few of my favourite N64 games on the VC.

With it's solid library, GC compatibility and VC - for same room multi-player it is unparalleled.

I still play Mario Kart Wii also, I'm over 1,500 hours now and counting! But, that will probably end when Mario Kart 8 hits...

If any of you newer folk are looking to play online games, feel free to give me a shout-out.
