It's very nice deal nonetheless especially with the Wii included.
I think $20 for the case and Wii console was a phenomenal deal. Ever since people started to realize what great retro consoles Wii's make the price has slowly been going up on them. The one I got is particularly nice because it accepts and reads GameCube games perfectly. Sometimes when backwards compatible Wii's get older they start not being able to read GC discs very well which is a real bummer if you like to play games like Super Smash Bros. Melee, Mario Kart: Double Dash and F-Zero GX that offer up a lifetime of replay value. :)

My Wii that we've had since 2007 thankfully still has no issue with GameCube games. That might be because I use my GameCube mostly for nostalgia reasons. I love the startup and menu screens, plus the weird loading noises it makes. There are so many Wii games I want to play but I can never find them and I'm caught up in the moment with n64 stuff. I just played Sin&Punishment and would love to find the sequel, that and Zack & Wiki are 2 games I want before they start getting expensive

One of my favorite aspects of the Wii is it's multitude different controller options. The Wii-mote and nunchuck are what enticed many people who had traditionally avoided video gaming to purchase the Wii. However, more serious gamers like myself are attracted to the GameCube controller and Classic Controller support. Here are the ones I own and use regularly.

Posted Image

The original Classic Controller (bottom) is ideal for SNES era Virtual Console games while the Pro model is my go-to for N64 VC titles.
^ Dredged up that older photo of my Classic Controllers so as to have greater impact with this pic of a boxed example I recently picked up.

Posted Image

Got it locally from a Craig's List seller who was letting it go for just 15 bucks. Being an official Nintendo controller I jumped on it immediately knowing I can also use it with my Wii U.

I think the Wii had the record for most different controllers you could use until the Wii-u came out. I always though it was cool when Wii games like Mario Kart and Sonic Colors had GameCube controller support but I've never used a classic controller of classic controller pro since I didn't do much Wii gaming during that era.

I don't think the Switch will be supporting any of these controllers though so that will give less options for anyone looking to play virtual console games

I'm now collecting original backwards compatible Wii consoles.

Posted Image

The picture shows two white Wii's with Monoprice component cables on top. Behind them is a boxed black Wii that I got for just 10 dollars when I sold off the rest of the lot it came with. :D

The upside on these backwards compatible units is huge given that Super Smash Bros. Melee players covet them. Also, as I've mentioned numerous times, the Wii is a wonderful retro console since so many notable games from yesteryear are available via the Virtual Console service.

The Wii is the main reason I didn't go all nuts over the NES mini when it came out. Sure, the VC NES games are criminally priced in comparison, but I don't care about most of the games the mini came with anyway. I can get exactly the ones I want along with SNES, Genesis, Turbografx and of course the N64 :)

I went to hook up the Wii on one of my TVs though and I saw that the power cord felt a little lumpy in a couple places. Is that cause for concern? I haven't had any issues with it before or when I see my laptop cords get a little lumpy but I wanna be sure.

The NES mini didn't do much for me either. To my mind it makes more sense to include some of those 8-bit games as freebies on the Switch as an added incentive for more people to buy the system at launch.

I'm a little bit nervous about the Wii shop channel's continued existence now that another generation has passed. I'm hoping Nintendo will be smart enough to let it stay considering how many more people own a Wii than a Wii U.

That being said, I'm ready to hook the Wii back up in the basement to get my N64 fix on (and unlock everything right from the getgo, thanks Gamefaqs) along with Amazon video :)

The Wii Shop Channel is a tremendous value and I hope Nintendo keeps it up and running as long as possible. If it doesn't hurt the Switch in any way I don't see why Nintendo should close the channel.

The original backwards compatible Wii is presently my favorite fighting game console.

These discs provide countless hours for FG goodness and the Virtual Console titles I have on my Wii like Street Fighter II Turbo and Samurai Shodown II round out the choices quite nicely.

Yeah, the Wii has a lot of choices for us fans of the fighting game genre. For example, I also own the Virtual Console versions of The King of Fighters '98 and Real Bout Fatal Fury Special which are both absolutely brilliant. Surprisingly, they look really nice on my HDTV too. :yeah:

One of my favorite Wii fighting games though is DBZ Budokai Tenkaichi 3. So many memories of playing that in the dorm with my buddies on Friday nights at college :)

I've never played Dragon Ball Z: Budokai Tenkaichi 3 but I've heard very good things about it. Pulled up a video of it on YouTube and I think I see that it had some influence on Pokken Tournament for the Wii U. BTW, I own Pokken if anybody wants to play some online matches. Don't worry, I'm not very good at it so you don't need to be intimidated.

Arguably the greatest Mario Kart game of all time and definitely my personal favorite.

This is a "refurbished" copy that I purchased directly from Nintendo as a backup to my launch copy that came with the Wii-wheel.

If I had a nickel for every minute I've played this game I'd probably be a millionaire. :D

@Grizz: I have nearly pulled the trigger on Tatsunoko v. Capcom so many times because I believe its the only Nintendo game with the G-Force/Battle of the Planets crew (The A-Team was also in that category of favorite TV shows not on a nintendo console until Lego Dimensions). Fighters are not really my genre but glad to hear it earns your seal of approval!

And yes, Mario Kart Wii single-handedly dragged me into the modern age of gaming. You mean to steer you . . . steer?!?

Thanks to BDR reminding me that I'd downloaded it to my Wii, I'm going to start playing Fast - Racing League this week. Up until now I'd only messed around with it but it's time for me to get serious and see what this highly rated WiiWare game really has to offer. Also, playing the Wii version should help prepare me for Fast RMX should I ever get a Switch.

The Homebrew Channel really makes the Wii an incredible and seemingly timeless gaming device. Yeah, some might argue that the Raspberry Pi has supplanted it but I don't think so. Not when you figure that the Wii is home to two of possibly the best soft mods ever created in Project M for Super Smash Bros. Brawl and CTGP Revolution for Mario Kart Wii. By the way, CTGP has had a recent update that you'll need if want to continue playing Mario Kart Wii online.

Since Photobucket screwed over all my old pictures, I thought I'd post a new one.

SSB64VC on CRT

Here's Super Smash Bros. 64 (Virtual Console) being played on a Wii that I got for just $5 because it has a broken disc-drive. Oh and yes, that's also the little CRT television that I was given for free recently. ^_^

Just in case you're wondering, the Wii is connected to the set with component cables that I purchased dirt-cheap from Monoprice.

Those little SD cards on top of the games allow the magic to happen. ;)

Mario Kart Wii Has Been Hiding A Secret Mode For Almost Ten Years

Quote:

Mario Kart Wii has been harboring a deep secret for the last nine years--an unused mission mode hidden within the game's code. Eagle-eyed YouTuber MrBean35000vr uncovered the mode.

MrBean35000vr, a Mario Kart 8 hacker and streamer, claims that within the 2008 title, the main menu actually has five options in its code rather than the four we've come to know. In his video, he shows this to be true, pulling up sub-menus that lack any text but do work as options for some sort of Mission Mode similar to the one seen in Mario Kart DS.

"The menus for Mission Mode have no available text, but the game is trying to load them; they've simply been erased," he says. "Similarly, a massive file that would've contained mission parameters is not present, and without it, the mode can't start - UNLESS you simulate its existence, which is what I did. It attempts to load files out of the /Race/MissionRun folder on the disc, but that folder is empty, but that affects nothing since that folder would only have contained extra data (like where to place goombas or similar). As such, I was actually able to play a few games with the game in Misson state, and show off some of the game modes."

Mission Mode, as it was in Mario Kart DS, was a mode that presented players with a number of challenges to take on. It was a sort of mish-mash of races, mini-games, and the like. MrBean35000vr says this iteration sports 12 or 13 different missions, with one most likely deleted as it doesn't do anything. The missions include wheelies, defeating enemies, drifting, collecting item boxes and more.

I'm holding on to backwards compatible Wii's as I suspect they're going to become highly sought after collector's items some day.

The picture shows two white Wii consoles with Monoprice component cables on top of each. In the background is a boxed black Wii that's also a b/c unit.

The popularity of 20XXTE and Project M for Melee and Brawl respectively should insure that these consoles never dip below their current market value.

Wii Price Charting Index

Right now people who don't want to hassle with pre-ordering the Super NES Classic Edition are probably very happy that Snes9x GX on the Wii works so well. ;)

I thought backwards compatible Wii's sold like hot cakes for like 5 straight years or something. They are certainly something most gamers should probably have but collectors items, that makes it seem like they are uncommon. I still have mine though. My mom got it in 5th grade. Jesus Christ I'm 20 now and I'm sad. My first 3 games on it were Twilight Princess, Resident Evil 4, and Mario Galaxy. Talk about a welcome party. I still remember kids from my childhood playing Wii Sports and Super Paper Mario at my church. I fear I'll never be enthusiastic about any consoles ever again at this rate.

Just a few things to keep in mind with respect to Wii collecting. First, since they're not natively solid-state machines like N64's, there will be fewer Wii's every year as drives start to fail and people hastily discard them. Second, the Wii represents the epoch of console collecting for the sake of the digital titles stored on the system's internal memory. Lastly, the ease of sourcing component cables and the plethora of inexpensive HDMI adapters for the Wii gives the console the ability advance forward technologically much more easily and economically than most of Nintendo's other legacy consoles.

These three backwards compatible Wii's in the photo all have broken disc-drives which means they sold for under $20 total.

Solid-state Wii consoles

Are they worth more than that? You bet they are as they all now have several extremely desirable Virtual Console games on their internal storage. Games like Chrono Trigger, Super Smash Bros. and The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.

I believe the face of collecting is evolving and that probably means that backwards compatible Wii's (thanks to their built-in support for GameCube controllers) will only become more valuable as the years go by. :)

honestly, I dont see how B/C Wii will be collectible. I mean, it's so easy to jailbreak that the need for a disc drive is absolutely 0%. Any wii, except the Mini, could do just fine.

Backwards compatible Wii's allow you to play Mario Kart 64, Super Smash Bros. and Wave Race 64 with what is arguably Nintendo's greatest controller.

480p graphics and GC controller support make those classic N64 titles and several others even better and just shy of HD remakes. Of course, the Wii Classic Controller Pro is still best for SNES and NeoGeo Virtual Console games.
