Thanks to everyone who replied so quickly! :D I too think it is a sun faded atomic purple, but after looking at it more today it might be smoke gray, who knows.

Anyway, the controller is completely the same amber color all-throughout (except the cord piece) which makes me think its not sun faded. Has anybody ever seen this happen to the 64 controllers before? (If so, do you know the plastic it's made of?) I've never seen it before.

I've included a picture with better lighting so you more easily see the controller, and the picture on top has the sun faded controller on the left and my atomic one on the right.

(Sorry my last picture had really bad lighting!)

Is the bottom clear white? If so, sun faded jusco. Definitely sun faded next to a window perhaps in the land of the rising sun.

@frostgaze: On all official N64 controllers, the plug color matches the controller color. So that plug should tell you what color it was at "birth", but I cannot tell from your picture if the plug color is smoke or atomic purple.

Sunfading is considered a flaw in terms of collecting, but are far as gaming, they are fully functional and unique. If the stick is good, play it!

where'd you get it? I'm looking for one at a decent price
I currently own every n64 controller minus the comboy and e3. I substitute in my employee controller for one of them lol. I actually had a friend make an e3 replica decal that is pretty :cussfit: spot on. Don't worry, it's for display only. Id never try and pass one off to sell. Ive honestly given up on the e3 because it's so easy to fake and the only to 100% confirm the validity is to have picture proof of the seller at that specific e3. I know you can look at and spot a fake fairly easily but ill upload a pic of mine. aside from me putting it on the slightest bit crooked, it's pretty impossible to tell it is fake.

Not sure if this has been covered before but, I'm now in the market for a Japanese Mario Kart Controller... the one that was black on top and grey on bottom. From what I've heard, the black and grey coloring does not vary from the all black/all grey standard controllers.

My question is, how do I know this is a legit MK controller other than it coming from Japan? Looking to pay around $20, does that seem like a normal price for one? Anyone with experience feel free to chime in, especially ddr2nite. Thanks!

buy the MK64 Japanese Bundle or try to find a Boxed One. other, get a black & grey controller and do a mismatch. could be cheaper.

TofuJunky, as you've already figured out... the MK controller really is just a half black & half gray controller. There isn't any way to tell "officially" if the controller itself came from a Mario Kart boxed set, so if I were you - I wouldn't pay a ton of money for it or go way out of your means to obtain one.

As Cabanon said, perhaps the best way to obtain one of these that is as close to being the real thing as possible is to buy it in a the big box set with the actual game. Even that is not 100% guaranteed, but it isn't very likely that someone would lose the original MK controller, then go find another one to replace it.

Best of luck, hope you can find one for cheap!

Not only is it a good idea to get these controllers from Japan, they are also MADE IN JAPAN. If you are concerned about authenticity, it will say MADE IN JAPAN on the underside of the controller.
Most N64 controllers are MADE IN CHINA, these controllers are not.
