I'm pretty sure the one alxbly guessed is the one you're thinking of...
I think Kerr Avon was the GameFAQs member who posted the link and strongly recommended this controller, if you want to grab his attention and ask for the link again.

As far as the US name for the "MakoPad 64" controller, it's called the "SuperPad 64"... unfortunately, this name also refers to a controller with a different (and in my opinion, UGLY), 3-pronged design. What makes everything even more confusing is the fact that more than one company makes both designs of the SuperPad. As far as the 2-pronged version, instead of being clear like the MakoPad, it's solid black, and the "SuperPad 64 plus" version is the one that has the turbo/slow-mo features. I think the 3-pronged (ugly) SuperPad Plus just comes in different colors.

Anyways, I could probably go into more detail (and maybe even post pictures) if you want...

... maybe I'll eventually even write up a 3-rd party controller review (since I've tried quite a few)... that is, if ever I get off my lazy butt. ;)

And if you're curious as to what I think about the SuperPad 64 (both the 2-prong & 3-prong designs)... I can recommend either one, as long as you've got pretty adapting hands. They both have decent control (identical?), and much more longevity (as far as I can tell) than the 1st party controller... all thanks to a metal-base analog stick.

Hey dataDyne, if you want to try get a MakoPad for a "joystick implant", I can already tell you I'm 90% sure it won't work! (I'm not 100% because the MakoPad may be slightly different from the SuperPad).

I had thought to do exactly what you were thinking, but upon opening up the SuperPad I had, the joystick was totally different. I think the wires were soldered down, and the tabs to secure the joystick to the controller were incompatible with the one(s) for the official joystick.

But don't let this stop you from getting a MakoPad (or SuperPad)... it should be a decent controller by itself.

... And sorry everyone who might be waiting for my controller review/pictures... I've been working on it, honest!

(silence)

Does anyone care??

I'd also like to throw in a few good words for play-asia.com... like alxbly said, their service is truly excellent... and their shipping speed is ridiculously fast (esp. if you choose the express one, but I've heard their "regular" shipping is still really decent). In my past experience, this is probably the best & easiest way to get (current) import games (or import anything video-game-related)... and if you pre-order a soon-to-be-released import title and choose the shipping option with tracking (the "fast" one previously mentioned), chances are high that you'll receive the game no later than a day after its release!!

The only thing kind of tedious & annoying I ran into ordering through them (but this also shows their high level of service) was that since one of my orders was pretty big (i.e. expensive), they requested either a special credit card verification, or scanned images of a photo ID and the front/back of the credit card I was using, both with my visible signature. The verification wasn't working at the time (which made me feel pretty insecure already) and sending the images sounded WAAAAAAY sketchball, but they said I could black out any info except for the signatures and the first & last few numbers of the card, which I did... "and the rest was history."

*continues to think about getting one/both of the two-tone clear N64s* <_<

"Hi, yeah, I'd like to make a reservation... uh-huh, yeah... yeah, I know you guys are located in ****MeSoHardWithWorkThatIBleedOutMyEars-ville, but I'm gonna be there for the next 3 months. Great. Yeah, and you guys do have the 'Pay-per-Play' service in your rooms, right? Excellent. Yeah, I know using it's not allowed in your town... but I'm only there to take pictures of it. Great, thank you so much!"

I'm not really so sure...
I would say "possibly"... since my (apparently insensitive) thumbs can't adjust well to the sensitivity of the analog stick without the rumble pak. So there's a high chance that I'd get even more thrown off with the rumble pak.

Actually... come to think of it, I might've always been playing with the rumble pak (since I typically go for "maximum sensory input"), and that might actually be (part of) the reason alxbly and I differ on this one point (the thought never really came across my mind before!). Alxbly, have you been playing without the rumble pak? If so, then it may very well be "yes, it is too sensitive."

Either way, I guess the only way to truly know is to have some Perfect Dark stud play some hideously hard combat simulator level numerous times both with and without the rumble pak, and do some stat-calculating with headshots etc.

Who knows though...

Whoa... yeah, I've never even heard of that one! (So naturally) it must be retardedly rare. ;)

As for the Hori pad... like alxbly, I'd say it's definitely one of the rarest, as far as 3rd party non-standard controllers go. Although these X2 and Alpha 64 pads seem to have a mild case of "never showing up anywhere, ever."

Hey alxbly... so, sorry I forgot to post earlier, but this weekend I had thumbed through every page of both years 1999 and 2000 of NP... advertisements, player poll contests, promotions and all, and not a single picture/mention (or anything that was remotely close) had caught my eye. :( Basically, I'm 98% sure there's nothing like what you're looking for within those pages. -_-

It's possible that there might've been a separate contest flyer or catalog sent with the subscriptions (which I unfortunately don't have after ~1998), but I'm beginning to doubt this controller's existence... at least in terms of an association with Nintendo/Nintendo Power. Sorry there...

However, thinking about this controller reminded me of another auction I had seen a few months back... for a pretty rare Japanese controller. Perhaps this might even be the JP equivalent (in terms of rarity)? It was a special release of the official controller, except it had the name/logo of a specific toy/video game store (sticker?) on the front, under the engraved "Nintendo." It was all black, and I want to say the logo was a little lion or something. I wish I could remember which store it was for (the JP equivalent of Funcoland?). The box (which was included, as it was all brand new!) even had "[store name] limited edition" on it somewhere... I think. If not those exact words, then something similar was written on the box, so I'm quite positive it was an "official" release. I just remember the seller had totally miffed up the translation... At least s/he tried, I suppose... but this translation was horrid!! "[X store] Bros. Controller " turned into something like "[X] Short story roll love rose" (I thought to message the seller to correct his/her translation... but I felt that would've been a little too pompous. Plus, I didn't want it to be changed!) ;)

Honestly, I think it's a pretty good deal...

Back when I was looking at auctions for replacement sticks, they'd sell for anywhere from US$5 to $10... BEFORE a usually pretty steep shipping charge... of like at least $6 or so.

Ah... that's the Nyko Alpha Pro 64. Kinda rare-ish. Howevers... I've got one in my hands right now, one of at least 3 different controllers that I'm just waiting to actually send to alxbly to review/save... since I'm too damn lazy/busy.

Maybe I'll post some pictures sometime... it's kinda nifty in that it's got two really "trigger-ish" Z-buttons below/behind each shoulder button. However, as some reviews have stated... the analog sticks really are quite stiff. >_<

It was a little heartwarming to see the N64 controller in c|net's The five best game console controllers of all time article... (apparently) sitting at #3 (with a second Nintendo controller in the list sitting at #4). No mention of its flimsy analog stick or button inaccessibility, though I'm not complaining... in light of all the hate the poor thing has seen.

One thing I always found aesthetically displeasing was how holding it with the middle and right prongs caused the controller to be all sideways & angled. Really minor/stupid/trivial, but it always got to me a little.

Were there even any games that had you hold the controller with the left and middle prongs?

I'd much rather have my insides turn to soup than mistakenly purchase a rip-off controller off of eBay.

I know... SERIOUSLY... at least with Ebola you don't have to pay anything... >_<

Speaking of "sense"... I sense that (what a transition!!) alxbly has now been severely humbled in the world of N64 controllers. :o

If you had two of the glove controller, it would allow you to play a 2-player game with a glove in each hand. And that... is something I've always wanted to do.
That would definitely work... IF you had two right hands. And 100%/isolated left-brain/right-brain coordination. Of course, given that you've already made the adjustment to the completely alien button placement.

@alxbly... looks like the cable tie was never removed. ;)

That would be a big, fat, nope. I swear I must've spent a whole five minutes before I realized that the commitment (to adjust) would be huge, and the gain would be minimal (or non-existant/negative, rather). My apologies for shirking it onto you. >_< X_D

I spent three years of searching for the ultimate N64 controller and it turns out that it's the one Nintendo provide with the console. ^_^
Really?? I stopped my search when I found what _I_ believe to be the ultimate N64 controller... the SuperPad/MakoPad 64.

I bought "white lithium grease" it sounded good, but I'd rather not do trial and error. So what lubricant would be best to use, or good to use. Thanks!
What you have sounds pretty close to the "White Grease" that I've used with complete satisfaction. I'm guessing that really any grease that's compatible with plastic should be fine.

Daaaannnng... (fwnsp/ddr/kami) I'm really impressed with the display setups... I've seriously never thought to display controllers in such a manner, and had no idea it would look so CLASSY!!!

Makes me rather ashamed now, that I have a good sized box of controllers, just packed away under a HUGE pile of (vid-game-related) junk. Kudos to you all though!! :yeah:

Yeah... I'm quite impressed, kami! And just for a few months' time... WOW. :omg: So was eBay the main (only?) go-to place for you? Back when I was collecting (N64/SNES games), it was essentially the only place (outside of our local independent game shop here, which is *AWESOME*) that I'd go to in order to find obscure poop.

Anyways... very nice controller/Zelda collection! :yeah:
