The best Explorer (file manager, not browser) replacement for Windows?

There's a stack of utilities that claim to make Windows faster, or more reliable, or easier to use, but one type I've never really bothered with is the replacement file manager. These have always existed, and were of course far more command (and necessary) back in the pre-Windows 95 days, when they allowed command line aphobic people to come to terms with the lack of a GUI driven operating system. I did see programs like Norton Commander, Total Commander, and others, but never bothered with them too much.

But since I've (belatedly) moved my own destop up to Windows 7, I thought I'd give them a look, as anything that makes sorting or fixing PCs easier is worth a look, and nowadays you can bung portable versions of such programs on a USB stick and install them on any machine you're working on.

So, what explorer replacements do you use? I've tried Explorer++ and it seems goood, is free, comes in 32 bit and 64 bit versions, and has so far done everything I wanted it to, with no problems. The only things offhand that I can see it lacks is a powerful search function (it's search is basic), and it only has one windows, whereas those file managers I remember from way back had two windows each. This is no real problem, as you can open up several instances of Explorer++, just like you can with the normal Windows explorer, and copy and move files across from one to the another (or too and from the desktop, Windows explorer, etc).

Does anyone use a replacement file manager? If so, which do you use, and why?

I mainly just use ordinary windows explorer. Up until about 2 years ago I used a 1986 Dos based Norton Commander program.
My main reason for not using it anymore was because it won't let you have like more than 10 characters in a file name. That can lead to some mix ups from time to time. Now about the only thing I use NC for is just to delete specific malware .dll files that windows and other programs fail to delete.

At work, if I'm tasked with something that requires using files from more than 2 directories, I often resort to Q-Dir, mainly because it allows for up to 4 "sub-windows" to be opened in one main explorer window, and allows you to configure them in most any layout you'd typically want. Another handy feature is that it remembers the last filepaths/windows used. :D

If I were able to re-map the Window key + 'E' to Q-Dir, I'd probably use Q-Dir exclusively... but alas, laziness prevails in that realm. ;)
Now Playing: Clash Royale (mobile), Gravity Rush 2, Rayman Legends, Project CARS, Uncharted 4 Survival Mode ᕕ( ᐛ )ᕗ
