Alright people, be prepared to have your minds blown. I am introducing to the N64 collecting community and the world for the first time ever:

The GEOFFREY Controller

What is the GEOFFREY controller?
This controller is a Japanese special controller. As you can see from the box, it is called "GEOFFREY" which refers to the mascot of TOYS "R" US, Geoffrey the Giraffe. The controller is pretty much identical to the Halo Mac controller, which means it is also 1/2 solid black, and 1/2 solid gray. On the front of the controller is a logo of Geoffrey himself. I would imagine this was released as a special edition, limited edition controller that was only available in TOYS "R" US stores in Japan. Who knows how many of these were made - but I would imagine it is as rare as the Halo Mac controller since no one has ever seen one in the years of N64 controller collecting :omg:

Is this a REAL controller?
I assure you, this controller is real and not something made up or faked. I purchased this controller from a Japanese Yahoo auction web site, and paid a pretty hefty price trying to outbid several other people for it - not only for my own collection, but so that I may share it with the rest of you guys here in the N64 collecting community as a very rare piece of N64 history.

Any other questions, please feel free to ask! :mario:

I'm pretty sure somebody here made a post about this controller last year. If I recall correctly, the giraffe logo is just a sticker that is pasted on the controller right? If the answer is yes then I'm definitely remembering it correctly. If the answer is no then I must be mistaken and I apologize in advance!
Whatever the case may be, congratz on getting it! I've definitely never seen that box before! :o

Yes, it is a sticker that's on the controller. Hmm... if someone finds that thread, go ahead and post the link for us to reference to

Excellent scoop ddr2nite! :yeah:
Ive never seen it mentioned or shown and im pretty sure you (or finngamer) would have known about this if it had been spotted before.

OTOH: Another "near impossible to find" controller we just have to add to our collection? Sometimes ignorance is bliss :)

Did you ever hear of one before you purchased this one? I think you probably have the best controller collection for the N64 if you managed to find this! It's cool to find out about new controllers though! I might try to find one of these. I tried Google searching for it though, and found nothing!

Mep, I had NO idea that this controller ever existed. When I first saw it - I almost mistakened it for the Daiei Hawk boxed controller because of the same orange color of the text on the box. But then I took a closer look at the words on the box, and the logo/sticker on the controller, and about fell on the floor :omg:

Trust me, I've done A LOT of research on Google and also it helps that I can read some Japanese - but there is no history about this controller anywhere at all on the web

It's intesting that it took this long for someone to find and have pics of just 1 N64 controller! It's awesome that you posted photos! Thanks for sharing with us! Oh, welcome to the site finngamer.

Hmmm I can't seem to find it...
IIRC, there wasn't a thread created for it but I think somebody made a post in a existing thread about seeing it on a Japanese auction website and he/she asked us if the controller was real. At that time, I assumed some kid had just stuck a sticker on the controller and that it wasn't real. I remember quite a number of us replying to that post too so hopefully someone else who remembers can post more details here too!

For anyone wondering about the Japanese written above (GEOFFREY), it reads:
Controller Bros.

Don't know why though.

Thanks for letting us know! All of the Japanese boxed controllers say "Controller Bros." above the name of the specific controller.

So now this makes 29 to find or 30?

Depends on your list. Here's my count of the Japanese boxes:
- 6 solid colors
- 1 black & gray
- 1 clear blue/white
- 1 clear red/white
- 2 pikachu
- 1 midnight blue
- 1 clear purple
- 1 clear black
- 1 Daiei
- 2 gold
- 1 Mario Kart
- 1 clear gray (Jusco)
- 1 Hello Mac
- 1 Geoffrey

Here are the US ones:
- 6 solid colors
- 1 atomic purple
- 1 extreme green

The European one:
- 1 clear blue/white

The Australian ones:
- 6 Funtastic colors
- 1 clear purple

Add them up and you get: 37 unique, cardboard boxes across four different regions of the world. :coffee:

Allright and for unique controllers themselves I think I now count 30:

1 Solid Grey (All)
2 Solid Black (All)
3 Solid Blue (All)
4 Solid Green (All)
5 Solid Yellow (All)
6 Solid Red (All)
7 Solid Gold (All)
8 Solid Pokemon Blue / Yellow (NA / EUR)
9 Solid Pokemon Yellow / Blue (AUS)
10 Solid Pikachu Blue / Yellow (JAP)
11 Solid Pikachu Orange / Yellow (JAP)
12 Solid Mario Kart Black / Grey (JAP)
13 Solid Hello Mack Black / Grey (JAP)
14 Solid Geoffrey Black / Grey (JAP)
15 Solid DK64 Banana (NA)
16 Solid Nintendo Power 100th Issue Gold (NA)
17 Solid Millennium 2000 Silver / Black (NA)
18 Transparent Atomic Purple (All)
19 Transparent Extreme Green (NA / EUR / AUS)
20 Transparent Smoke Black (All)
21 Transparent Grape Purple (NA / EUR / AUS)
22 Transparent Ice Blue (All)
23 Transparent Jungle Green (NA / EUR / AUS)
24 Transparent Fire Orange (NA / EUR / AUS)
25 Transparent Watermelon Red (NA / EUR / AUS)
26 Transparent Daiei Hawks Orange / Black (JAP)
27 Transparent Jusco 30th Grey / White (JAP)
28 Transparent Red / White (JAP)
29 Transparent Blue / White (EUR / JAP)
30 N64 Logo Gold / Black E3 Controller

So many to collect. If we are dealing with just different packaging, the Australian boxes are all different for the solid 6 colours too since the text is different. On top of that there is different versions of the boxed solid colours with pictures of different characters on the boxes. I would not count each of these as truly unique boxed versions. Then we also have your Hong Kong boxed one - there are probably French, Spanish and other randitions too. Where it all ends collecting wise is personal preference I guess beyond trying to obtain all 30 (or more :P)

I've obtained a second (3rd overall) Geoffrey controller complete in box. Currently trying to work a very important deal with this item... just thought I'd share with the rest of the N64 community that this controller is a legitimate and real Japanese release (and not a one-off).

I'll let you know, but as I said to the other collector who I'm talking to (not hard to figure out who)... I'm going to be holding onto this item and only available for TRADE only. No cash considerations. Due to it's rarity, I will only be letting it go for items that I do not yet have in my collection

What do you think should be the cost of the controller on its own without a box? I am trying to work out a deal to obtain the controller without box but I feel that it alone should not be worth over $100

Hard to tell. Obviously we have never seen it on eBay before (not until this week anyways, there's 1 listed for auction and I'm assuming you're e-mailing the seller to give you a deal on it). But, if you think about it logically... the most expensive controller aside from the Geoffrey and Hello Mac is most likely the Daiei Hawk and Jusco controllers. Those go anywhere between the range of $65 to $100+ (not including shipping, usually from Japan). And those 2 controllers are more common than the Geoffrey because they were available as both a stand-alone (boxed) version as well as in full console sets, so the chance of a loose one showing up is more frequent/probable.

The Geoffrey came online in a single stand-alone boxed version so due to its rarity right there gives it a fair price bump above the others. So I would say $100+ is not out of the question. Look at the price of the E3 controllers - they are just as rare, if anything even more common than Geoffrey and Hello Mac. And those sell for $300+ :money:

Most likely, sadly, the rarest of all controllers to this day is the Hello Mac. Only 1 so far has ever been seen in existence (boxed or loose) :-/

Yeah... unfortunately my trade fell through ;_;

But as I've said before... this 2nd boxed Geoffrey controller will only be available through trade only. I've been made a VERY generous offer but at this point in collecting, money is not really the concern for me. I'm after the missing items to complete my collection. Gotta catch 'em all! :mario:
