Is anyone here into backpacking? I've done a few trips in the northeastern United States, mostly on the Appalachian and North Country Trails. I want to do some up in Alqonuin, Ontario. I've been to Alqonquin on a canoeing trip but not packing. If you don't do backpacking and have no idea what the heck I'm talking about, it's where you take a backpack, shelter (tent), sleeping bag, and some food, and walk around in the wilderness for a few days. Why would you want to walk a bunch of miles up mountains, sleep on the cold ground, and get eaten alive by biting insects, you ask? You'd have to do it to understand. |

This is something I haven't done since I was a kid, and I've been spending the whole summer trying to convince other people to do it with me. There's not a whole lot of mountainous regions in South Carolina (none that I know of at least), but there are plenty of camping spots to make it worth the time. |

I love everything about backpacking and camping, its the biting insects I cant do!! Hate the little buggers!! I seem to attract them too and end up being smothered in bites. In the UK we dont have those huge open areas like you do in the States (those places that remind me of the Blair Witch Project)

I don't take trips to places too extreme or nice like you've mentioned, those are really beautiful whereas I've just done that on some nature preserves. It's the silence for me, great way to get away and collect yourself plus your getting great exercise. The surroundings really matter, its a lot different than running through a park, you get much more of a "peace" when your secluded like that, and I like the feeling on occasions. Also people who feel like they need to be the center of attention would not like this, lol. In my opinion it's all about calming your person down and working out mental obstacles. The best way to enjoy yourself without being taken aback by mosquitoes is to just shower in an entire bottle of "Off Woodland Strength Repellent, ha. That will get the job done, then it is just you and the zen of nature! Happy Trails

I like the outdoors, but with the heat, bugs, allergies and asthma, I spend most of my time outside in the winter and spring. For some reason this year its been exceptionally hot and buggy too, the mosquitoes are torture. |
