Great find Mel! I just ordered a copy of this (EGM2 Issue #38) off EBay for myself. Took a bit of searching but finally found a copy - I like having these magazines, printouts, and ads of the controllers to add to my collection :yeah:

I also found some cool stuff in my issues of Nintendo Power that have pages about the following:

1.) There was a Mario Kart contest that Nintendo Power had, in which the winners all received a gold controller. I believe this was the very first time the full gold controllers were offered (before the Nintendo Power 100 controllers went on sale, before the E3 1997 StarFox 64 competition, and before the gold controllers were sold as bundles or singles in stores). I will take pictures of the magazines and post them here shortly.

2.) In another issue of Nintendo Power where they covered E3, they had a picture of the ASCII Pad 64 controller and briefly mentioned it. I will take a picture of that too.

There's not much info about this right? This is begging to be scanned (",)

Or at the least, that should be typed out so that google catches it.

Star fox gold-covered n64 controller: these were given out to all the winners of the four-player star fox 64 tournaments held at nintendos booth during the show

Wow that is SICK! Ill! Disgusting! etc.

Well found! I assume you contacted finngamer to let him know as well? Any history at all about these controllers is awesome.

There are indeed several of them out there.

As of right now, these are the people that we know who has one:

1.) Finngamer (not signed)
2.) Andrew Reiner (signed by Miyamoto) - here is the link to his blog and story of how he got his controller at E3
3.) me (not signed) 8)

Here are a few pictures of my E3 controller :mario:

The story is pretty well established now - at first it was thought that the controllers were handed out only to Nintendo employees (and maybe they were, but probably not until after the E3 event in 1997). However the actual origins of the controller is from E3 in 1997 which was held in Atlanta that year.

Most of the original owners (or should I say "winners") of the controllers have given similar stories about that event. There was a StarFox 64 competition, in which the people who attended E3 could wait in line to participate in the contest. 4 people would compete at a time, sitting inside these machines that were Arwing replicas while playing the game. The winner of the round would receive one of these gold/black controllers with a gold "N" logo.

As you can see from the picture that Kami posted, the magazine confirms the way that these controllers were won and given out.

Haha Glen...
There is really 1 in a million chance that someone will sell theirs, let alone find this thread. And if they did, they would want probably thousands of dollars for it. I don't think any of us has a chance of getting it really =/
Hehe, can't believe that less than 2 months after you said that - I already have it in my possession  And I guess the odds are better than 1 in a million if you post more threads on other forums - and it didn't cost me thousands of dollars :money:

The story is somewhat complicated, but I'll do my best to tell the tale of how I got my E3 controller...

It actually all took place on another forum. The community over there is HUGE, but 90% of it is NES related. They have a very large Buy/Sell/Trade/Auction area and have hundreds of very active users. It all started actually because I was searching for the Extreme Green Box for Kami (mission accomplished by the way - she now has the box). I had posted a "want to buy" for the box, and I made a side comment about how I was also looking for some of the more rare N64 controllers such as the "N" logo gold controller.

One user made a post on my thread later that day, saying that he "wonders how much the N gold controllers are running these days because he may still have one somewhere." I started to PM him, but wasn't really confident because the controller is so rare that I doubted that he had one. It took him a few days but he actually did have one stored away - and he posted a new thread on the forums with pictures to prove it, saying that he's taking offers for it. He also wrote an entire story on his E3 experience that year (1997) in Atlanta and the Star Fox 64 battles he was in to win the controller.

I had made him an offer - but there was also another member who also wanted the controller and had made an offer to the guy. It took a long time for the original owner to figure out who had priority and offered a higher price - but I ended up winning him over in the end and he accepted my offer. The whole process from beginning to end took almost 2 weeks and it was like torture not knowing if I was going to get the controller or not.

But it all worked out in the end and as you can imagine - I'm very happy to have it in my possession :D

That is crazy that he has something so rare that there are only a handful of them in existence simply stored away...I wonder where the others are and if they are aware people are willing to spend so much on a controller as a collector's item. Excellent find and congrats!

I prefer not to tell how much :money: I paid, but I will say that this was the most I've paid for a single N64 controller. The most expensive controller before this one, was 1 of my two Millennium 2000 controllers - which was $140 at the time.

I found this lil guy at a local retro game store for $25. At first glance I just thought it was just a fancy gold controller and I kinda always wanted a gold controller so I got it. (that Gold :n64: is just so eye catching) I basically came across this by sheer dumb luck. :P
I am by no means a hardcore collector, so I may just sell it to someone if the right offer comes my way.

Its hard, but if you look closely, you can see that the bottom is black. You cant tell its black, but its not a shiny color like gold. And its clearly not any of the colored ones... so we can conclude the whole thing is original

That is so cool that so much information is springing up since the original poster and I posted!

Yes, it is true, I sold my controller to Finngamer. Well, rather, I traded it. I won't divulge the full trade, but, yes, I made away quite well. It involved a Nintendo 64DD Development kit, of which I have since sold.

I had a crazy find, and I am sure you can, too. Good luck finding more of these! They sure are cool. :3

I wonder who ended up buying this from Sean?

I'd like to identify them so that we can keep a list of those who possess this controller on this planet.
