Controller Collecting Extraordinaire
|
Just wanted to do a bit of sharing and discuss a small topic that several people have asked me about. Most people have asked me what I'm going to collect when I'm done with my N64 controller collection. Well, my #1 focus has always been and will continue to be on N64 controllers until I finish them. I'm still short 2 official controllers (sealed Watermelon, and CIB Hello Mac) and 2 unofficial controllers (metallic black ASCII pad, and Purple Forest Foxdata respray). My #2 focus might be to have a complete set of accessories... I'm not far off anymore and have the harder to find items already done. What I mean by the harder to find items are firstly of course the 5 blister-pack sealed accessories (rumble pack, transfer pack, memory pack, expansion pack, RF switch). Then one of the harder to find boxed accessories is the Australian boxed transfer pack, which I've acquired. The rest of the accessories are easy to find - just a matter of price. I have a few of the Japan consoles, with the CIB Jusco 30th Anniversary system as the most noticeable of them. So there's a chance I might one day want to acquire all of the consoles as well - I haven't decided yet. I will most likely start with getting the international ones (Japan and Europe) and expand from there. I just find it hard to justify all the room that they take up for storage, My other focus that has been going on for quite some time are Nintendo Power Magazines. I'm slowly building up my library, but have a pretty extensive set of them already. I have years 1997, 1998, 1999, 2000, and 2001 (issues #92 through #151) all of them complete with original posters and bonuses that came in each issue. I also have all of the exclusive Nintendo Power collector's issues, and nearly every single one of the Super Power Supplies catalogs. I am slowly working up a full library of the Nintendo Power (official) Player's Guides. I'm starting with the SNES games and will then complete the N64 guides and move onto the Gameboy + old NES guides. Some of these official player's guides are worth a bucket full of money... with the Earthbound and Chrono Trigger guides the most expensive ones (topping $70+). Some of them are getting really hard to find, so I want to get a full set of these before they're completely extinct. At the end of the day... eventually in 25 or 50 years from now, I don't think I'll ever part with my collection. There's a small chance that I might sell it ALL to 1 owner, and it would have to be another collector, for a LARGE sum of money. But more than likely what I'll end up doing is finding the right place to donate it to (like Nintendo Headquarters or some notable video game museum - if such a thing exists) such that it can be preserved for all to see. Good collecting everyone - never give up or lose interest in your hobby. Do it because you love it.

The Australian transfer pack is just rare to find complete in box, that's all. Lithium017 first discovered it - and even today I don't believe Finngamer has one. I found one about a month ago and scooped it up. You can see it in Lithium's video here and he talks about for a bit. It is the only region to have released the transfer pack in the red/green/blue/yellow box that's like the North American accessories. Europe's transfer pack box is black and white. North America never released the transfer pack in a box like the rest of the accessories. If you think the blister pack accessories are easy, let's see you complete a full set of 5 you'll find out that yes, while the memory pack, transfer pack, and expansion pack show up frequently... the rumble pack and RF switch rarely show up and sell for $50+ each. It took me about 4 months to since I started searching to find the rumble pack and 6 months for the RF switch.

Nice to hear what direction of collecting you aiming for Glen. Are the Hudson/soft controllers still not on your list for collecting? |

N64 collection completed 7/29/12

The store by me sells these all the time. They're not licensed by Nintendo, or at least I don't think they are. They come shrink wrapped and are stapled to a piece of card board with the store's name on it. That's how everything without a box comes. But anyway, I guess you're referring to an official one then, 'cause they're extremely common by me. |

TNT737373: you have no idea how excited I was when the sealed RF switch finally showed up on EBay 2 days ago. I don't have it in my possession yet but these are the times when all of your patience and endless hours of searching every day finally pays off and you get that last item to complete a set Clarky_n64: Well, I already have the boxed Hudson Joypad that I believe you are talking about. I know there are 2 other special colors of that version (a clear blue and clear neon green) but those seem like a unicorn... a "myth" if you will. We've seen pictures of them on a Japanese advertisement for a contest where you can win them but no one has one that we know of. Alice Lawless: Of course I'm referring to official ones - the unofficial ones, or without boxes RF switches, or even the boxed official ones - are all over EBay. We're talking about the official Nintendo, sealed-in-plastic, RF switch (image below). |

well, it's not really black and white but only one side of it has not so much colours, because the smoke black controller is there. on the other 5 sides, it's far from being black and white as it shows the other funtastic controllers: http://www.ebay.es/itm/TRANSFER-PAK-Nintendo-64-Nuevo-a-ESTRENAR-ORIGINAL-/310267692519?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_186&hash=item483d6545e7 |
