HELP! Removing Adhesive!

Hi guys, please give me your advice on my situation, as I really need it. >_< I picked up a CIB launch N64 for 50 dollars flat including shipping off eBay, which I thought was such a fair price, I just had to jump on it. The seller has stated he's lowered the price because of a thin strip of packing tape that's slapped across the front of the box. Other than that, the thing's in very good condition.

If I can get this piece of tape off the front without peeling away the artwork, it would look supa-cool. Haven't received the box yet, but now's a good time to start searching around for some adhesive removing products or techniques that can remove this tape without damaging the box underneath. I'm scared about using Goo Gone or dabbing nail polish, can anybody here offer up some of their wise words from past experiences? Thanks!

Using a hot hair dryer on it might melt the glue on the tape so you can get it off without peeling off the artwork. Not sure but its the only thing I can think of.

Thanks Zar! Yep I also found this video on youtube:

I thought my situation was bad, this guy manages to get fresh USPS packing tape off a shoebox, and the cardboard doesn't even have any finish to it. It's a miracle, lol, check out what the box looks like in beginning and then skip to the 5 min mark, wow. Yeah I'm using a blow dryer on high heat and on the low setting, should work very nicely. Pressure's on.

Let us know how the hair dryer thing works out...

I've had about a 85% success rate with Goo Gone on just about everything. Although recently I've run into issues with some SUPER adhesive on the underside of mailing/address labels that simply will NOT come off (it is taped/stuck onto magazine covers). Quite frustrated because I thought Goo Gone was the supreme product that took care of everything, but apparently it is not invulnerable -_-

Just tried the hair dryer out on some stickers on game boxes.
It's not a wonder thing that will work always but it seems to me that it at least helps a lot. Still you need to have patience and cold hands before doing it ;-)

You can still see a thin layer of adhesive, but at least it's much better than before. Maybe Goo Gone would take off the remaining glue, but I think I'm just gonna leave it as is. I don't want to take the chance of ruining the ink. From only 3 feet back the glue rectangle becomes invisible. I got this CIB for only 50 bucks including shipping, so overall it was a good deal, and I'm satisfied with the turnout.

Considering that was industrial-use packing tape, (pretty much duct tape) I give the blow dryer method 3 out of 5 stars. :n64: Definitely recommend using a hair dryer when removing any sort of adhesive material, melts the glue and allows you to slowly peel off top layer without ripping off what's underneath. Real good. 8)

Read my new tutorial article on using Goo Gone here: http://s9.zetaboards.com/Nintendo_64_Forever/topic/7317170/1/

I'm willing to bet that Goo Gone is able to remove whatever is still leftover on your box from the tape that was originally there.

Yep, still gluey. And your right, the residue does have the texture of dried honey. I don't think it's as thick as your build-up tho... Yikes that tape left a mark! What the heck..
I got some Goo Gone free from work today so I'm gonna try that out when I get a good hour of free time. Gonna follow DDR2NIGHT's tutorial too, so it's going to really be a wild experiment, lol. I'll let you know how it went, and post some more pics probably tomorrow night. Also cool gameboy.

Goo Gone Results!
Worked out very well, thanks to DDR2NIGHT for giving me the emotional support and confidence to try out Goo Gone on my box! Ha, his tutorial was also helpful, check it out for reference: http://s9.zetaboards.com/Nintendo_64_Forever/topic/7317170/1/

Overview:
So yes Goo Gone works miracles, with lightly soaked q-tips it dissolves glue into a liquidized jelly, and then all you need to do afterward is wipe away the "residue jelly" with a clean cloth and repeat the process onward. For the glossy cardboard I've found that a 100% cotton T-shirt works better in wiping away the glue residue than microfiber or polyester cloth. Dab a q-tip in Goo Gone (to where it's fully absorbed but not dripping) and in streak motions rub the q-tip up and down over the affected area to create a nice path. (Found if you rub in a circular motion this increases the chances of fading the ink below the residue, however up and down sweeping motions pushes the jelly away from your work area on the box, and you can wipe the little jelly deposits off with the T-shirt on the sides after q-tip sweeping). Create a pattern with the Goo Gone q-tip sweeping so whatever cleansing you do remains manageable and visible for further correction. In the pictures below I used a ruler as a guide to see where I've worked and where I need to work. For the best pickup result I say one q-tip (both ends utilized) cleans up about 1 square inch of residue area. Good luck to you guys that try it, I highly recommend using Goo Gone in small amounts to clean up any sort of glue residue, I was cautious before on this type of cardboard material, but the gloss sheen provides enough protection to prevent smearing the ink, so your ok with using mild pressure in rubbing off the residue in vertical or horizontal motions.

The original spot is invisible, even from up close it's like the tape was never even there. Love it. :n64:

:D I'm very happy my tutorial was able to help. I know that I was quite amazed with the product myself, and thought that it would work on ANYTHING after it cleaned up a controller box that had some heavy duty packing tape on huge portions of the cardboard. Alas, it has only failed me a couple of times with some weird situations... but I'm willing to take success 9 out of 10 times with the product

Excellent work TNT - your description of your cleaning process is very spot-on and just like what I usually do. We can't validate every single type of surface and tape that Goo Gone is capable of removing, but we can usually safely say that the sticker residue left over from tape on Nintendo glossy boxes (such as those for consoles and controllers) will work about 99% of the time for a great, shiny, like-new finish. :yeah:

Nintendo glossy boxes

ive often felt fortunate that the big N decided to go with high quality glossy printwork on sturdy cardboard. it really makes it much more viable to remove stickers and gunk.
Our collections could have looked a lot worse !
