Hi, I just got a new gun for painting with metal flakes. It's easier, faster and uses less material than the old method-mixing flakes with clear or intercoat and spraying 5-6 coats to get a good coverage. The worst part here was cleaning the gun. Geting all the flakes out was a pain in the ass. So I tested the so called "flake buster" with amazing results on this old broken n64 controller shell. The finish has imperfections because I was spraying in my dad's dusty garage. Here is a pic but it's necessery to see a video to get the full effect. Here is a video from a youtube member just so you get an idea how it looks. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JLOyen2DPzg I know not alot of people are fans of metal flakes. My friend hated them (he just saw some pics of flake paint jobs on the net), one day I showed him my gold flake unfinished gamecube in the sunlight. He was stunned how sick it looks in real life. What do yo guys think about metal flake paint jobs? Edited by zoki64, Aug 14 2012, 12:31 PM.

Great, I have some magenta flakes that throw a rainbow effect. A system would look sick with this kind of paint .

sure I will start taking orders as soon as I finish some open projects. But what do you mean with black with gold flakes? Gold flakes over black base still showing trough? Or bottom black flake and top gold flake? Or gold and black flakes mixed? |

The size of the flakes it what can kill a paint job. I prefer the smallest I can get. The second pic you posted is a perfect example of too fig flakes. It would look better if it would be completely flaked out. And also its very hard to photograph flake paint jobs, the surface looks rough. This guy used standard flakes and the surface is fully flaked out http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ZfSwry5Kl0 What do you think of that? |

yeah it's durable. it needs about 3-4 coats of clear so you can still color sand it. |

Do you add the flakes to the clearcoat or base Zoki? I've always assumed there added with the clear. |

At first I added it to my intercoat clear (base without and kind of color pigmentation). I did this because it dries faster and the coats are not as thick as if I would mix it with clear. But now I bought this: ![]() The flakebuster just sprays out dry flakes. The aplication is easier, faster and it uses ALOT less material. You just spray down a lite coat of clear(with a normal spray gun), wait a few minutes so the clear starts being sticky. Then you spray over the clear with the flake buster, the metal flakes stick to the clear and you get a near perfect coverage. Spraying flakes the old way mixing them with clear would take about 5 coats to get a perfect coverage. The worst part here is cleaning the gun. Getting all those flakes out is a nightmare. That's really neat! Do you apply another coat of clear over the top once you've finished with the flake buster gun? |

Yes but just so they are "glued" in place. Here is how I do it: 1. metallic base in the same color as the flakes (just in case you missed a spot so its not as noticeable) 2. two coats of flakes in between three lite coats of clear. when the clear dries it has a textured surface 3. because the surface is textured and the fakes can be ruined if sanded I apply 3 coats of clear. I think 2 coats would be enough as well but I like to have some extra clear when color sanding something like this |
