this morning i discovered an intruder on my home Wifi network.
in my frantic efforts to deny him access i managed to screw up my router and i cant get it to work properly anymore.
Ive done a factory reset but i cant access the configuration pages anymore. Arghhhh!!!!
I'm afraid i'll have to buy a new router. What a waste :nope:

Now I've connected my main PC directly to the ADSL modem so i can at least access the internets and my mail again. Big relief!

disconnect it for couple of mins, it should do the trick. you should be able to regain access. next time, DONT use Wifi unless you really need it and shut off the SSID Broadcast.

Couldn't you just reset it and use Putty to access the terminal to either input all of your configurations manually or copy over a previously saved script? I believe Cisco has steps on their website for breaking into your router.

for some reason i am not able to access the configuration pages.
i forgot the password so i had to do a factory reset to restore the default password.
after that i havent been able to connect to the router IP address.

shut off the SSID Broadcast.

 whoa Alice, not too many people have those types of routers in their own homes. I work for Cisco and know exactly what you're talking about but like I said, those types of routers aren't typical in the commercial/residential homes. Cisco does make their sub-brand "Linksys" which everyone and their mom knows about and probably has at home.

MK, my guess is that you didn't fully do the factory reset correctly - because if you did, you should be able to get into your router with the factory-shipped default settings + password. Just make sure you're accessing it using the right IP (typically 192.168.1.1, 192.168.1.0, etc.) but sometimes depending on the manufacturer/brand, the root IP used to access the router might be different.

you're a lucky man. i swear by Linksys router product since 10 years and never had a single problem. last year, i installed a custom firmware for my WRT54G wireless router and god it boosted the wifi signal enough to be able to get full signal at the farthest side of the apt. while before i barely had any.

gotta love those small device !

You could try opening it up and removing the battery backup for 5 min or so if the factory reset doesn't work again.

I would say do a firmware update but it's kinda hard when you can't access the config pages. Are you able to ping the router after a reset?

UPDATE: a good night's sleep for the router and me seems to have done the trick; i can access the router configuration pages again.
I've got a functioning network again (yeehaw!) but as soon as i enable MAC address filtering for wireless access, Wifi stops working.
No Wifi = no online matches = very bad!
So ATM i have only disabled SSID broadcasting to keep accidental intruders out

What type of security are you using on the wireless? MAC address filtering can be easily cracked/spoofed. You should be using WPA2-Personal/AES encryption with a passphrase. That should be built into your router. If you enable that type of security and unbroadcast your SSID, you should be safe.

Take it from me, I'm CWNA (http://www.cwnp.com/certifications/cwna) certified.

Ahh... bugger little hand-held devices <_<

And it wasn't that I didn't believe you, but as a wireless expert/geek I was intrigued to look up the DSi XL's specs. And I found the following on Nintendo's customer service website (http://www.nintendo.com/consumer/wfc/en_na/ds-security.jsp):
Quote:

Since the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS are compatible with WPA security, can I play Nintendo DS games online using WPA?
Nintendo DS Game Cards are only compatible with WEP security, and are not compatible with WPA security. So while you can enjoy other online features of the Nintendo DSi and Nintendo 3DS with WPA security, you cannot play Nintendo DS games online with any system if your network is secured with WPA.

I am just  laughing and  at the same time at this. Do they not understand that WEP can be broken in under 10 minutes with free programs and the right hardware? Geezes Nintendo, you guys really gotta get with the times and update your 1995 wireless technology. >_<

you know, at my former place-of-work we had a number of wireless networks with different kinds of security.
My DSi XL doesnt even boot up there... it probably stumbles when it searches for access points.
When i leave the building and walk to the park i can boot it without any problems :eh:

Anyways: i have enabled WPA2 encryption, scr*w the DS.
The 3DS connects just fine and thats the most important... i need a daily dose of Kid Icarus multi-player mayhem!

Also discovered the router has a problem rebooting after you change settings.
i have to turn it off for a few seconds to force a reboot.
that would explain a lot of the trouble i had yesterday

Thanks to everyone who offered advice... much appreciated!
