Has anyone here ever started off a gaming business?

I was thinking a store selling not only newer things but also retro titles.

Also I was considering having a lan center attached with consoles/PCs.

Although I assume im dreaming too high.

It would be fun and a good idea, but you would probably need a little bit of capital to make this work. And of course a lot of hard work.

I always thought it would be awesome to own a gaming store/club but never thought seriously about it cause its just too risky for me, especially in this economy...

I wanted to do it for a while but in my opinion games will be basically download in the next 3 years and retro gaming is too much of a niche market to run a gaming store on without the odds being very stacked against you. I would imagine getting loans to start up at this point would be next too impossible without some very serious cash down. Not to crap on your dreams lol I'm sure it is more then doable if you are willing to take the huge risk and work very very hard to establish yourself.

Before even considering a brick and mortar store, I'd open an eBay store if you were serious. You won't have to pay $1500 in rent or utilities or anything, so annual costs will be low. You'll need a dedicated Craigslist WTB thread though and have to hunt for deals like nobody's business.

The hardest part isn't making the sales, it's finding the inventory.

How would you market your business? Do you have a clever idea that would set you apart from the Gamestops (brick & Mortar) or the big eBay stores (lukie, etc.)? Games only? What about music (vintage vinyl) or other interests of yours? Rhetorical questions of course, and, of course, I have no answers . . . but I am fanscinated by those who are clever enough to elevate their business from above "the clutter". . .

if you were to open a legit store though, you would be able to write off a LOT of things right? like gas money to go pick up game lots from craigslist, the cost of any games you buy, and all that? I havent filed taxes in my life yet, but Im assuming thats how it works.

This is what drove a small retro game store here around my house out of business. They simply couldn't find enough clean retro games at a reasonable price to turn a profit.

Oh don't get me wrong, theres still tons of issues that would need to be sorted first, the idea of a ebay store gives me somewhere to start at least.

Money would be the major issue, being under 18 I wouldn't be able to apply for loans sadly.

OK being under 18 is a huge obstacle. Even when you're 18 having 0 credit will make it just about impossible to get a loan the size you would need without a co-signer with very good credit because regardless of what they say, no credit is NOT better then bad credit. You need much more then it takes to just open a store. Most new businesses don't generate profit for 6-12 months, so you not only need enough money to open the business but you need to get enough to stay open until you are making money. That aside you are going to have to have extra for employees and money to live on since you most likely won't be able to pay yourself for the 6-12 months. There are spread sheets available out there that will help you calculate all of your expenses. They are basically set up so you fill in the blanks and at the end it will give you a total. I HIGHLY suggest doing this and looking at what you will need before making the decision to move forward. Hope this helps a little :D

Problem here would be inventory. If you don't have the goods than people won't come back to visit. Opening a store is next to impossible but selling at a swapmeet or flea market seems more realistic.
WTB or trade for tons of N64 games and Accessories.
