As I said elsewhere, ~48 stars deep into Mario Galaxy. Manhunt 2 completed on "sane"... "insane" shall commence shortly. Quite a bit further in Zack & Wiki... last "normal" stage on Barbaros' castle? (This game is simply several shades of awesome.) Also... I popped my Virtual Console cherry and downloaded Sin & Punishment & Sonic the Hedgehog the other day... but I've only been playing Sonic... only getting as far as the end of the Labyrinth Zone - act 3. Amazing what save files have done to gaming!!

^ How does VC Sin and Punishment compare with N64 S&P? Just now I'm playing: Endless Ocean - I'm about six or seven hours in... and I only got this game yesterday. Really enjoying it Orange Box - Still replaying Half Life 2. Had a quick play through Team Fortress... on my own... ...and managed to unlock an achievement (???). In Half Life 2 I'm up to Highway 17, and that part is nearly finished. Not touched Portal yet, but Zero Punctuation's review of Orange Box, and opinions from this board, have me looking forward to Portal. A lot.Super Mario Galaxy - Fourteen stars in and enjoying the game a lot. But, I fear, maybe not as much as everyone else in the world... |

I'd say it's a direct translation (heh... pun so intended) from the original. Specifically, menus & training missions... translated. But another thing that came directly from the original... the confusing controls! The added complexity of mapping the N64 controller onto the Wii classic controller left me on the "Operations Guide" from the Home menu longer than in the game itself. That's when I gave up and resorted to Sonic happiness. Definitely NOT saying S&P isn't worth the download... as I'm sure it most certainly IS. (I remember having a BALL playing the original after devoting some time to get used to the controls.) It's just that this game SCREAMS for IR control.
But wouldn't that "dumb-down" the game, making it more approachable for the "less hardcore" among us? Probably. But I swear to |

Just now I'm playing Half Life 2 Episode 1 and I'm about two hours in. It's good, and the.... *SPOILERS ALERT* ...Combine zombies are just brutal! Had a few nasty deaths from those guys running at me with a grenade. Especially liked the areas where you have to fight hordes of zombies in the dark, with only your flashlight to see where they are. *END SPOILERS* Tried Halo 3 online for the first time and, predictably, I didn't do very well. It's kind of addictive though, as the multiplayer game is really well thought out. The only thing I miss is the team spirit you get from Team Fortress 2. From what I've seen, most Halo 3 players just want to go for the most kills without really thinking about teammates. The game's good, but I much prefer Team Fortress 2. Speaking of which... TF2 is just getting better and better. I'm getting good as a soldier now, and I've worked out some good strategies for playing the different maps. A medic joined up with me and we and caused some real damage earlier today. It was great! I've also been playing a bit more of RE: Umbrella Chronicles, which is much better as a two player game. Mrs Alxbly and I have been teaming up to fight off the zombies! Now I'm off to play Endless Ocean. |

Prince of Persia: The Two Thrones. Almost completed the game on the "hard" difficulty (which isn't actually all that hard save for a couple of boss battles). |

Finsihed Half Life Episode 2, so now I'm gonna move on to Portal. Also been playing a few Xbox 360 demos: Sega Rally - If you liked the previous Sega Rally games you'll like this; tough competition, cars which easily slide around (and into) corners, unforgiving arcade rally fun. I could spend a lot of time with this game. Need For Speed ProStreet - Exceeded my expectations, which weren't high due to the reviews I'd read. It's very fast and the sense of speed is almost scary. The demo only gives you two challenges so I've not played much of the different styles of race the full game offers. The lack of police and the removal of the ability to explore an open world environment mean the game feels more serious than the last few Need for Speed games. Test Drive Unlimited - I'd been looking forward to playing this but it wasn't all that great. I need to play a bit more online but so far it's just another Xbox racing game. The complete lack of any damage to the vehicles feels strange given the realism of the rest of the game. |

Gordon must be tired with your forcing him to run through Episode 2 in like a day. What did you think of the ending? It terrified and saddened me, but I think I was too engrossed in the game to see all the obvious foreshadowing. |

***SPOILER ALERT*** * Well, I knew someone was gonna die, but I didn't know who. The very last fight against the striders and hunters seemed like a final confrontation type battle so I was ready for something to happen. The long conversations at the end kinda gave away who it was that was gonna be killed off so in that respect I wasn't surprised. But the manner in which he was killed off was a surprise, I didn't see that one coming at all. I was expecting the new character to be the one dishing out the death but it wasn't to be. What did you think of that final battle? I found it quite frustrating... and I kinda wished I could just use rockets instead. I like the Half Life games a lot but I sometimes wish there wasn't quite so much emphasis on the gravity gun. It's cool but it's maybe overused slightly. * ****END SPOILERS**** |

I agree about the final battle. It was satisfying when you blew a strider to pieces, but having having those bloody hunters firing those irritating homing things at you at the same time, combined with searching for Magnusson devices, etc. I would have rather had a gun that fired Magnusson devices rather than having to run/drive long distances to get one (and pray I don't miss or it gets shot out of the air) and I would have rather had a smaller battle field with no car. It seemed like they were trying to be Haloesque (it was, after all, released on the 360 not long after Halo 3) and that's something Half-life can't do very well. The gravity gun does get a bit too much use. The novelty of it is starting to get a little old. They need to find new ways to incorporate it -- and in Episode 3, they definitely need to include a new weapon. I kept hoping for a decapitated hunter arm or something, but it never came along.

***POTENTIAL SPOILERS**** I dunno. I never thought at any point that the game was trying to be Halo. The car is useful for taking down the hunters by running over them, but it doesn't have a Halo feel at all. I think the combination of the car, the large battle area, the hunters, the Magnusson devices and the need to switch weapons to shoot the Magnusson devices were all intended to add difficulty to that final battle. It certainly wasn't easy but I'm not sure it was particulary enjoyable either. Like you, I was hoping for a new weapon, and less emphasis on the gravity gun. But these are minor grumbles, overall the game was really enjoyable. I hope they find some new element to keep things fresh with Ep.3. ****END SPOILERS**** |

Just started fiddling with Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Games. Which I had no hand in acquiring (though I was thinking about it). One of my roommates bought it. And my Wii's the only one in the house.
Even though I've only played a little single-player thus far... this game is... FUN! Sure, there's a bit of that repetitive wii-remote drumming etc... but IMO, it's really not all that played out as some of the reviews make it seem. And there's really no other better motion I could think of to use in the places they implemented it. And of the meager 3 events I've done so far... Trampoline = AWESOME. |

Played Call of Duty 4 yesterday. The single player game is really good, really intense. The multiplayer has a very steep learning curve and I got killed a ridiculous amount of times. I was playing a team deathmatch but no-one was talking to one another... seemed a bit silly to not let your teammates know what's going on. The balance of the game is skewed heavily in favour of more experienced players; they get weapons upgrades and other perks which aren't available to new players. All of which means starting off as a n00b isn't much fun, especially if you don't know the maps. I can see the depth the game has but you're at a serious disadvantage when you first start playing. Maybe if the game matched you against similarly experienced/levelled opposition it would be more accessible for new players? For now I'm finding the multiplayer to be more frustrating than fun.
Back to Team Fortress 2...
