$99 hardware revision cannot connect to Internet at all or play previous generation games; hits retail December 7 exclusively in Canada.

Nintendo confirmed the Wii Mini as a Canada-exclusive to be sold through the holiday season. No mention was made of a release in other territories. A landing page at the company's website confirms the earlier reports. The Wii Mini cannot connect to the Internet or play GameCube games.

Complete report.

I don't think its too pricey since it comes with a matching controller & nunchuck. I don't even use the internet on my Wii and still have a Gamecube so I wouldn't mind picking one up. I just don't see why they're only releasing it in Canada right now.

The Wii Mini looks pretty nice but without Wi-Fi support it's hard to justify picking one up at $99. Since my favorite games on the system, Mario Kart Wii, Super Smash Bros. Brawl and Goldeneye 007, all support on-line multiplayer I'd be lost with a Wii that doesn't allow for on-line play.

I'm really happy with my full-sized Wii that not only allows for on-line play, access to the Virtual Console service and the ability to send my Mii to friends but is also backwards compatible with GameCube software and controllers.

weird move by Nintendo. It doesnt have WiFi so it cant be used to stream media and i understand a lot of people use their Wii to view Netflix et al.
And it seems silly to do this just when the new Wii U has just been released in NA.
It would have made a lot more sense last year IMHO.

Nintendo probably managed to shave quite a bit from the production cost per unit by cutting the Wifi, supply shorter cables and a smaller box (== more Wii's on a pallet means less transportation cost ).
Amazingly, the Wii still sold about 300.000 copies last month in NA so it will probably make them some extra millions

Stll, i do want one for my collection... ive got the other Wii's (white, black, red and blue) and you've got to catch them all of course :)

I already can see some sad kids at christmas.

"Mom, I want the new Wii console for christmas"

Mom goes to the store and buys the Wii Mini instead of the Wii-U X_D

"Mom, I want the new Wii console for christmas"

Mom goes to the store and buys the Wii Mini instead of the Wii-U X_D
Then mom says, "See kids, you now know how important it is to specify exactly what you want. Have fun with your new Wii."

I will try to get one of these, just for collecting, but I'm not going to pay more than $100 plus shipping.

You know I have the same problem.

I can't afford the Blue and Red Wiis, and I had a Black one for a little while, but this mini will DEFINITELY be in my collection, if i can find a good deal, or if they offer it in the US.

I want one eventually, just to keep new in box. I use my wii for netflix almost exclusively, so using the wii mini is pointless for me, but as a collection piece, it would be pretty awesome.

I want one too. I'm hoping these will take a heavy price cut in 6 months down to like $69.99. If these end up having a short production run and end up in limited quantities I'm going to be so pissed. ha

I love a red and black colour scheme on a games console. If these came out in the UK, I wouldn't mind picking one up. And that's actually a huge endorsement from me, as I never buy any modern gaming stuff!

Funny, I wonder if history will repeat itself (or not).

The NES Top Loader and the SNES mini both command a higher price than their original counterparts, due in part to their relative scarcity. But I'm not sure that trend will repeat here.

Both the Top Loader and the SNES Mini offered improvements over (note: I'm not saying that are better than) their earlier carnations. The Top Loader has, well, a better loading system and those more ergonomically appealing dogbone controllers. The SNES Mini featured a far better design that the hideously ugly original, without any loss in functionality. I think these advantages serve to prop their present values up more than their late to the party rarity.

The Wii Mini obviously does not represent an improvement in any way over versions 1.0 or 2.0 for that matter. Then again, then maybe that cool design will boost its value a bit amongst gamers with a gamecube and a WiiU.

Great points made, also the reason I'm concerned with scarcity on this one is because were now going into the eight generation of consoles, and besides hardcore collectors like us I can't see anybody wanting a standard Wii without internet capabilities. This is the first home console to not offer internet play since the N64 right? lol. With only a Canada-based test production run, I don't see the mini catching fire. Their main target audience (kiddies) now want the Wii U. Seriously who the hell besides us are gonna want to buy this?? lol. This thing isn't gonna make it to Europe who wants to take bets!!!!! ha

i dunno... there are still many and large regions in the world where (fast) internet access is not a given.
And im sure they must have done some market research that indicated this would sell in large enough quantities to make it worth their while.
Don't forget, "we" (as Nintendo fanboys & girls) are a very a-typical group of cunsumers.

Actually, this isn't entirely true...
While it does look a bit sleeker, the SNES mini was actually gimped from the original in that unless you do some circuit board modding, it can't output to S-video (which gives a slightly better picture quality than the standard composite/RCA output). >_<

(I found this out the hard way.)

I always wanted one but read it was non RGB and thought nah. I always like the look of the NES Jr though. I do dig the design of this Mini Wii but I do not feel the need to buy this one.

pretty sure they cut down wifi & gc support to prevent softmodding the console. wa sway too easy to do so.

still, if you guys want it and want to arrange something for folks in the US, pretty sure I can help. same for Europe.

you dont need wifi or GC support to mod a Wii, just a SD card. So i dont think that is the reason.
IMHO it's just cutting costs.. every dollar slashed from production, storage and transport is one extra dollar pure profit per SKU.

Back in the goold old days, the NES PSU cables kept getting shorter through the years.
Electric cable doesnt cost much but it all adds up if you use it by the truckload..
Cutting a couple of inches from each cable * millions of consoles = lots of extra money

I guess what surprises me most about this is that it isn't that much cheaper than regular Wiis. We sold a white Wii at Walmart for Black Friday at $89 and it has since went off sale and up to a whopping $109.96. Black Wiis with the Sports games are about $130. I think, like some of the others in this topic, that this needs to have a nice price drop before it becomes appealing. I'll never own it since I already have a red Wii but right now it only seems like something a hard core Nintendo collector would grab right off and all the way from Canada if it stays exclusive to my neighbors up north.

those are very good points. I know what copper is worth, I work in it. couple of inches here and there can save a huge amount of money. probbaly the same reason as why the SNES & N64 console didnt come with A/V cable in Japan.
