It's that time of year again, when people start talking about what was their game of the year (their favourite game of the year). This year especially I'm out of the loop, as there are a lot of highly rated games (and no doubt lower rated games that are actually worth playing) that I hear mentioned that I've not played, or sometimes even heard of. But anyway, I've been thinking of which game I'd nominate for GOTY, and I've narrowed it down to either Halo 4, or Far Cry 3, and I think I'd say Halo 4, which is mostly very good. Other notable 2012 games for me include The Darkness 2 (good, but short, and I didn't like the last levels), and Dishonored (should have been excellent, and nearly was, only it's too easy, the slightly cartoonish graphics jar with the serious subject matter, it's too short, the ending is almost non-existant, and it really feels like they kept part of the game back to sell later as DLC), and Nothing else really stands out for me this year - I've not had too much time to play games, especially these past few months and I've not yet played Mass Effect 3, Max Payne 3, or Borderlands 2, so when I do then maybe one of those will take the number one spot for me. Of course there's always the possibility that an all conquering game will still come out, but every game I was looking forward to, at least, has already come out (or been pushed back to 2013, so doesn't count), and people seem to be talking like there's nothing great still to come out from what I can see (though that's only the 360 and PC forums, don't know so much about the PS3, and not at all about the Wii/Wii-U). Anyway, what's your number one game of 2012? |

I don't think I purchased a game made in 2012 BOO! Even though it came out in late October of 2011, Battlefield 3 would likely get a nod from me if it qualified anyhow. I threw 303 hours down on it. I loved the multi-player. The single player was EPIC!If I had the time/money, I am sure I would be stuck between Hitman Absolution and Assassin's Creed III

Probably Hitman Absolution for the sole reason it's the only 2012 release i've played this year. I was extremely disappointed by it though. |

Halo 4 was disappointing to me, may be the only fan boy alive to say that. ha I own every halo game + soundtrack, and this one just didn't do much for me as the past MC games. Honestly, the nominations should go to either Far Cry 3, Borderlands 2, or Max Payne 3. I would understand any way the votes go for those, they're all fresh and stunningly polished plus developed from the heart. My vote goes to Max Payne 3, it's the best single player campaign in a shooter I've played to date. Extremely in depth into characterization, excellent plot. The shooting mechanics are some of the best and most satisfying, feels like your IN an action movie. I'm a huge fan of action movies, and this game has many nods to great film franchises. A must play before you die, the multi is magic as well. Edited by TNT737373, Dec 5 2012, 11:10 PM.

Well, I've only played 2 games that were released in 2012: Diablo 3 and Magic: the Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013. Diablo 3 was a huge pile of stinking **** and destroyed the Diablo legacy Magic: the Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 is a fun casual card-playing game which is easy to learn, difficult to master, but I'm having tremendous amounts of fun with it, especially when playing online with a friend. For comparison, Diablo 3 came out in May and I've played it maybe 60 hours. DotP2013 came out June and I've played it for over 230 hours. 'Nuff said tl;dr: My vote goes to Magic: The Gathering - Duels of the Planeswalkers 2013 Edited by Arch Evil, Dec 7 2012, 02:25 AM.

Well seeing I'm a sports game nerd. Im going to say NBA 2K13. This series just keeps getting better. More recently though I've bought Far Cry 3 which IMO is awesome. The co-op mode (which I believe is built for 4 players) is mad fun and super hard with just 2 players. Me and a Mate had a crack on the weekend. Anyone who hasn't played it I recommend you at least try it. |

Hard to decide that's for sure. Most likely either Sleeping Dogs or Halo 4 |

Playing through Far Cry 3 which is quite fun right now, and that seems like it's possibly GOTY 2012. Hitman: Absolution is pretty good, so is Sleeping Dogs and Max Payne 3. 2012 is the year of the almost GOTY games. None of them seem quite good enough to be GOTY. I'd say Counter-Strike: Global Offensive, but it only has one main game mode and isn't really GOTY material even though it's a fantastic game. |

Why were you so disappointed in it, Norcal?? It sounds like older Hitman fans feel the levels are now shorter, too linear, and/or perhaps too focused on the story... but (I think) I'm nearing the end of the game, and have been enjoying it immensely! (Granted, I am a relatively new Hitman fan.) I'm a little confused at the fact that you can't save (and quit the game) at the "mid-level checkpoints"... and perhaps a bit annoyed that restarting at the checkpoint leaves you with only your inventory and progress on main targets saved. I've replayed the first few levels and already know that I'll be having a BALL playing all the other levels, trying to figure out how to complete the various challenges.Back on-topic... Tough call on my personal GOTY 2012. I also wanna give the Vita some love, seeing how I'm (perhaps) the only one on this forum who owns/plays it. My picks would be LittleBigPlanet Vita, Lumines, WipEout 2048, Hitman: Absolution, and The Unfinished Swan. Interesting though... how we're a forum based on a Nintendo console, and yet not one of us has mentioned a single game for a Nintendo console (yet)! |

Well there are a few things that disappointed me, some of which you've mentioned. It seems like the level design went from relatively large open levels to chopped up, short, linear, point a to point b levels. I also didn't like the fact that most of the game 47 is being chased by police and is always starting out in hostile environments. Rather than taking out high profile targets in large, open levels often times in exotic locations, you're forced to play in these sort of run down areas killing nobodies all to get to a little girl. It seemed pretty un-47, being that he's supposedly the worlds best assassin, a cold blooded killer who only does his job for money, etc. I feel like the "real 47" would've shot Diana dead, taken the girl to the Agency, and awaited his next contract. I also strongly disliked the storyline, alot of the characters seemed overly obnoxious and as if they came straight out of a comic book (giant wrestler guy, stereotypical cowbow, head of the agency is some obnoxious guy with a mechanical hand, etc). Now I know that some of the villains were silly in the previous games too, but they weren't necessarily as over the top as these, and they were alot more serious characters, like terrorists, cia agents, enemy Hitmen, whereas the new ones are pretty insignificant. I don't know, I just got an unprofessional and sort of cheesy vibe from it all. I suspect this change in the series was because of a new development team taking over the game, something like 1% of the people working on it actually worked on the previous games. Then there are other little things in the gameplay, the broken disguise system, lack of arial maps (I suppose this is due to the stripped down linear levels), not choosing weapons before levels, no Jesper Kyd, etc. Don't get me wrong though, I liked the game overall, I'd say it is a 7/10 stealth action game, but I don't see it as a "Hitman" game. |

I'm getting the vibe none of you here have played Max Payne 3, it's the most bad-ass game I've ever laid hands on to date and unlike the COD series it actually has a soul. As far as character development goes there's really few games like it. Buy it, play it. Please. lol. Anyway Hitman Absolution was geat however I'm dissapointed by it in the same reasons as Norcal. Sleeping Dogs was original however pretty weak in gameplay imo as well. I can understand nominations for Halo 4, Borderlands 2, or Far Cry 3.. but some of these other games that are being thrown out there are pretty questionable haha. Whatever floats your boats. |

Recommend the first one for PC. $5 or less on eBay for the used disc, or $10 immediately on Steam. You'll wet yourself, guaranteed. lol Honestly you don't need to know squat to jump into the third game, it's almost better that you don't, makes his character even more interesting. Here is the first Brand New BIN very fast shipping, add it to your collection fast, I might buy it, sold my PC copy ha: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Max-Payne-Original-Release-PC-Game-Brand-New-Fast-Ship-/360533804316?pt=Video_Games_Games&hash=item53f17d451c |

The Last Story on the Wii. I seriously can't believe no one else has mentioned this already. This game is an absolute masterpiece. Far Cry 3, COD, Halo 4...pah! such generic dullness

Oh my, there seems to be a major omission from the games mentioned here so far. While I'm way on board with Far Cry 3 (which I've been playing loads of the last week or so), the game of the year for 2012 in my humble opinion is The Walking Dead. I'll have more to say about it in a different topic later on but suffice it to say that I've never (EVER) had a game affect me so much by my own actions and decisions from start to finish. It is a phenomenal game based on the graphic novel but fans who have only been exposed to the show (like myself) will still love it. If you haven't checked it out then do so! It was released throughout the year in 5 episodes for Xbox 360 and PS3 starting back in April but I waited for the physical copy that came out on December 11 and it was worth the wait.
