Word on the street is that the Playstation 2 is for all intents and purposes discontinued. Japan won't be getting any more shipments of the console from Sony and I suspect the same fate awaits all the other major retail outlets around the world. With that in mind, looking back, what was your overall favorite game or series on the PS2? Here's a photo that should tell you mine. ![]() |

Shadow of the Colossus. I'm thankful I still have a working PS2 and a copy of it to play, as well as the HD collection for my unused PS3. |

Lol my favorite PS2 discs are Codebreaker, Action Replay and Game Shark. Especially using them with GTA SA for car spawning and Smackdown HCTP using the 4 tables around the ring code. Edited by Ace Thunder, Jan 3 2013, 03:06 PM.

Sony has stopped shipping PS2 consoles in Japan Even though I'm a hardcore Nintendo fan I gotta admit that the Playstation 2 is probably the most influential video game console of the modern era thanks to its DVD playback capabilities and backwards compatibility with PS1 software. |

Although the PS2 wasn't really known for supporting on-line gaming I had a blast with an obscure title Tribes: Aerial Assault which essentially was a watered down port of the PC game Tribes 2. T:AA was the game that finally pulled me away from the Armored Core series as it featured similar gameplay (flying around with jetpacks wreaking havoc with impossibly powerful weapons) but had the added benefit of on-line support. I poured hundreds of hours in to Tribes on the PS2 and I only stopped playing it when Halo 2 was released on the original Xbox. Some of you may recall that Halo 2, thanks to Xbox Live, redefined console based on-line gaming and in many ways rendered the PS2 obsolete for me from that point forward. |

Yes, most people do as I suspect SOCOM II was probably the single most successful on-line title on the PS2. Tribes: Aerial Assault was to SOCOM like Halo is to Call of Duty as it was a futuristic take on team-based combat. In fact, Tribes' primary focus is Capture-the-Flag as opposed to many other on-line games which center around Team Death Match. Tribes: Aerial Assault supported dial-up (56k) as well as broadband which theoretically should have broadened its appeal but because of this, in-game voice chat was not supported which ultimately, I believe, hurt sales. Besides, T:AA is a very challenging game to play for people who aren't accustomed to thinking and moving in the Z axis of vertical space. The PS2 is an amazing console which could probably still be viable today if it properly supported HD. Since that isn't the case it probably is time for Sony to finally discontinue it and move on. |

Agreed. If there is one thing I think Sony should get some credit for it would be their support of their older consoles long after the new gen has come along. Both the PS1 and PS2 were supported and manufactured for quite awhile after their newer cousins came along. When the 360 came out Microsoft dropped the original Xbox like a bad habit. I love the Xbox's but that was rather abrupt on Microsoft's part. I wonder if the same will happen when the "720" comes out. Edited by The Red Shadow, Jan 5 2013, 11:56 AM.

How many PS2 titles exist across all regions? I started reading up on this to satisfy my curiosity and have come across estimates ranging from 2,000 to 11,000. 2,000 seems low given the immense popularity and longevity of the system. If you were to consider the Gamecube racked up a library totaling around a third of this figure over a much shorter lifespan and with far less third-party support. However, the top end amount of 11,000 unique titles is hard to comprehend. Good luck with that collection! |
